Big franchises still offered publishers durable, long-monetized businesses; smaller teams could publish through more routes than before; and platforms such as Roblox and the Epic Games Store increasingly combined distribution with creation and social play. The figures show parts of that changing landscape, not a complete measure of the global games market.
Why blockbuster games still matter
Franchises can earn beyond launch
Deloitte’s discussion of the 2025 gaming landscape, published via VentureBeat, argues that major publishers lean on established premium franchises because they can generate revenue over long periods. A game may earn from direct sales, subscriptions, in-game purchases, advertising, virtual goods and partnerships tied to its brand. That longer monetization tail can help justify expensive development and launch campaigns.
Established multiplayer communities are another advantage: a newcomer may have to persuade an entire group of friends to move, not just win over one player. This helps explain why a hit can remain influential even as new games and smaller creators find audiences.
Forecasts are not year-end results
Deloitte’s article also discussed the expected 2025 release slate, possible console activity, industry consolidation and changing willingness to pay. Those points were forward-looking context, not proof that the predicted outcomes occurred. They should not be read as verified year-end sales or market-share results.

Self-publishing lowered some barriers, not all of them
Independent developers had several routes to publish without relying on a traditional publisher. The Global State of Game Publishing and Marketing 2025 Industry Report names Steam, itch.io, the Epic Games Store, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Roblox as self-publishing routes. They differ in format and audience, but each illustrates how a small team can reach players through a platform.
Distribution access is not the same as discovery or commercial success. A title still has to stand out among competing releases, and independent teams can face difficult funding and audience-acquisition costs. A breakout game is an example of what is possible, not evidence that independent studios generally outperform major publishers.
Compare routes by what a team needs
- Reach and discovery: Consider the platform’s existing audience, search and storefront visibility, and how readily players can share a game.
- Creator economics: Check who controls pricing, how revenue is split, and what payout eligibility or monetization rules apply. Epic’s 2025 year-in-review says its terms paid developers 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product per year before the standard 88/12 split applied. Commercial terms can change, so confirm the current terms before relying on them.
- Control and portability: Consider self-publishing options, cross-platform support, customer relationships and dependence on a platform’s policies.
- Community and retention: Ask whether the platform’s social features help players bring friends and keep playing together.
- Production and marketing burden: A route to market does not remove the need to finance development or devote resources to reaching an audience.
Platforms are also places to create and socialize
Roblox and the Epic Games Store illustrate platform influence, but their company-reported figures describe different services and definitions. They are not directly comparable measures of a single creator or game market.

Roblox reported two different creator-earnings periods
Roblox’s 2025 Annual Economic Impact Report said creators earned more than $1 billion globally through its DevEx program from March 2024 through March 2025, an increase of more than 31% year over year. Roblox noted that this reporting period came before Grow a Garden’s breakout and related second-quarter 2025 records.
A later Roblox report, published in 2026 and covering calendar 2025, put creator earnings above $1.5 billion, compared with $923 million in 2024. These are separate platform-reported figures from different reporting contexts; do not add them together or treat them as cross-platform creator-economy totals.
Epic reported scale, spending and play on its store
Epic Games Store’s 2025 Year in Review, published in 2026, reported the following PC-store metrics for 2025:

| Metric | Epic-reported 2025 figure |
|---|---|
| Monthly active users on PC | 78 million, a record according to Epic |
| PC player spending on the store | $1.16 billion, up 6% year over year |
| Total gameplay hours | 6.65 billion; Epic said total hours declined year over year |
| Third-party title gameplay hours | Up 4% year over year |
| Claimed free-game titles | 662 million |
| Catalog size | More than 6,000 games |
The $1.16 billion is spending on Epic’s PC store, not total game-industry revenue. Epic also described text chat across Fortnite, its mobile apps and the launcher. Community spaces, profiles and other social features were presented as plans for 2026, not as completed features in that year-in-review.

The Game Developers Conference’s 2025 State of the Game Industry surveyed developers about their current games. Respondents could name platforms; these percentages are not mutually exclusive sales shares, player counts or measures of installed base.
| Platform in developers’ current games | Share of GDC respondents |
|---|---|
| PC | 80% |
| PS5 or PS5 Pro | 38% |
| Xbox Series X/S | 34% |
| Android | 29% |
| iOS | 28% |
| Web browsers | 16% |
The report says browser development rose from 9% the prior year to 16%, its highest level in a decade. Steam was not listed separately as a platform in the survey, so the PC figure should not be mistaken for a Steam-specific result.

- Add a blue disc to block opponents and lift discs higher
- Features blue Blocker Disc: This game includes blue Blocker Disc that open doors to new strategies
- Features blue Blocker Dics: this game includes blue Blocker Dics that open doors to new strategies
On tools, 32% of respondents named Unity and 32% named Unreal as the primary engine for their current game. Those figures describe developer responses, not engine market share by revenue or number of released games.
What the 2025 evidence adds up to
The clearest picture is coexistence, not replacement. Expensive franchise releases can draw on established audiences and long monetization windows. Self-publishing gives independent teams more ways to distribute, while leaving discovery and financing as real obstacles. Creator platforms and storefronts can meanwhile serve as economic and social ecosystems, not merely shelves for finished games.
The evidence has limits: Deloitte’s article includes forecasts, GDC reports developer survey responses, and Roblox and Epic report their own platform metrics. Together they illustrate several forces shaping gaming; they do not amount to an audited, market-wide accounting of 2025.
