Bloober Team builds psychological horror around a subject, atmosphere and catharsis; Kojima Productions builds authored worlds around Hideo Kojima’s singular creative direction. That difference explains why a Bloober game often turns trauma, guilt or perception into a playable horror scenario, while a Kojima Productions project such as Death Stranding can make an unfamiliar science-fiction world, unusual traversal and a broad social idea feel inseparable.
The studios also face different production problems. Bloober alternates between original horror properties and licensed work such as the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake, where fidelity to a beloved game matters as much as modernization. Kojima Productions’ defining projects are original properties developed under its own identity. Comparing them by genre alone misses the more useful distinctions: who controls the creative vision, what emotion the game is designed to produce, how technology serves that goal and how each team learns from project to project.

Bloober Team and Kojima Productions at a glance
| Comparison point | Bloober Team | Kojima Productions |
|---|---|---|
| Studio identity | Kraków-based developer founded in 2008; its About Us description says it has more than 250 people. | Independent studio whose public identity is closely tied to Hideo Kojima; its timeline begins with the first developed title, Death Stranding, announced in 2016. |
| Core creative objective | “Hidden horror”: a psychological or sociological subject, followed by a cathartic experience that encourages reflection on consequences. | Auteur-led, cross-disciplinary design in which Kojima remains closely involved with decisions across teams and disciplines. |
| Typical emotional method | Fear and unease expose themes such as sacrifice, body horror, PTSD, duality and changing perception. | Large-scale original settings, unusual systems and narrative ideas explore connection, isolation and the consequences of rebuilding society. |
| Relationship with intellectual property | Creates original horror games and applies accumulated horror craft to licensed properties, notably Silent Hill 2. | Builds original flagship universes, with later projects expanding the studio’s own creative identity. |
| Recent design direction | Adding heavier gameplay and survival-horror elements while retaining a horror foundation. | Continuing a highly visible auteur model through later Death Stranding releases, OD and an A24 adaptation partnership recorded on its official timeline. |
These are tendencies rather than rigid rules. Bloober’s games can be mechanically ambitious, and Kojima Productions can use horror or suspense. The distinction is where each studio starts: Bloober starts with a thematic horror problem, while Kojima Productions starts with a creator-led world and design thesis.

Bloober Team’s “hidden horror” framework
Horror is a means to discuss a subject
Bloober describes its design philosophy as “hidden horror.” The phrase does not mean that the horror is merely subtle. It means that the frightening surface is built around an underlying psychological or sociological subject. The studio identifies two guiding principles: a game needs that subject, and playing it should produce catharsis and self-understanding. Moral dilemmas are intended to make players consider consequences rather than simply survive a sequence of scares.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lead designer Wojciech Piejko explained the motivation plainly: “We wanted to arouse emotions and tell stories, and we all agreed that the horror genre was perfect for that.” In this model, monsters, spaces and set-pieces are expressive tools. The question is not only whether a scene frightens you, but what the fear reveals about a character or an idea.
Different games, different thematic engines
Bloober’s catalog shows how the same framework can produce very different experiences:
- Layers of Fear: sacrifice is the central concern, with a haunted creative environment turning personal cost into the source of dread.
- Observer: body horror provides a route into questions about identity and the boundaries of the mind.
- Blair Witch: PTSD shapes the horror, so disorientation and threat are tied to a character’s damaged perception.
- The Medium: changing perception and duality are represented through two worlds, two art styles, two versions of the protagonist and two composers.
The Medium is especially clear about Bloober’s method because its split reality is both a narrative idea and a production design problem. The two worlds do not simply decorate the story; they let the player experience the protagonist’s divided perspective.

Bloober’s current direction is not a rejection of psychological horror. Its About Us description says the studio is moving toward more action-oriented experiences, and a 2025 interview about Cronos: The New Dawn described a deliberate move toward heavier gameplay and survival-horror mechanics. The change addresses a practical question: how can a theme-led horror game sustain tension over a longer, more interactive campaign?
Expect that evolution to affect combat, resource pressure and enemy encounters, while the studio’s stated emphasis on mature storylines and eerie set-pieces remains intact. In other words, Bloober is widening the mechanical vocabulary of its horror rather than abandoning the reason it uses horror in the first place.

Kojima Productions’ auteur and cross-disciplinary model
One creative voice moving across departments
Kojima Productions is independent, but its public identity is inseparable from Hideo Kojima. The studio’s process is unusually auteur-led: documentary director Glen Milner, discussing HIDEO KOJIMA: CONNECTING WORLDS, described the level of thought applied to every aspect of design and gameplay and said Kojima was “constantly making decisions” while moving between teams on one floor.
That arrangement changes how coherence is achieved. Instead of a studio philosophy being expressed mainly through a recurring genre, a project can be unified by one creator’s decisions about story, mechanics, performances, interface, sound and presentation. The result may be unconventional, but the unusual parts are meant to belong to the same authored whole.
Building a new world instead of adapting a known one
Death Stranding is the clearest case study. It introduced an original science-fiction setting and made “connection” a social theme as well as a system of play. Deliveries, terrain, infrastructure and asynchronous help from other players are framed as ways of reconnecting a fragmented society. The concept is not a horror metaphor applied to an existing property; it is the organizing idea for the world, the plot and the player’s routine.
The studio’s official timeline records more than five million copies of Death Stranding sold on PC and PlayStation 4 by March 2021, and more than 10 million Porters connected worldwide by November 2022. Those figures do not measure critical quality or explain why players stayed, but they show that an unconventional, system-led original could reach a large audience.
The same timeline records subsequent Death Stranding releases, OD, an A24 adaptation partnership and Death Stranding 2. Together, those entries show a studio extending its own universe and authorial profile rather than primarily interpreting someone else’s canon.

How the studios create emotion
| Element | Bloober Team | Kojima Productions |
|---|---|---|
| Starting question | What psychological or social subject can horror make the player feel and examine? | What world, rule set and narrative proposition can express the creator’s central idea? |
| Player response sought | Unease leading to reflection, moral consideration, catharsis or self-understanding. | Curiosity, attachment to a strange world, a sense of connection and engagement with systems that may initially seem unfamiliar. |
| Role of set-pieces | Atmospheric and thematic pressure points that externalize trauma, guilt, perception or other subjects. | Highly authored demonstrations of a world’s rules, tone and spectacle, often connected to broader social or philosophical themes. |
| Mechanical emphasis | Traditionally exploration, puzzles and survival-horror tension; increasingly more action and survival systems. | Purpose-built systems such as traversal, delivery and networked assistance that make the theme playable. |
| Continuity across projects | Genre craft accumulates from one horror production to the next, even when the setting changes. | The recognizable through-line is Kojima’s authorial involvement and the studio’s willingness to build new formats and worlds. |
This is why the two studios can both be described as cinematic yet feel so different. Bloober uses cinematic presentation to intensify a subject inside a horror structure. Kojima Productions uses cinematic direction alongside systems and world-building to make an authored proposition feel experiential.

The production problem
Remaking Silent Hill 2 required Bloober to solve a problem that does not arise in the same way when creating Death Stranding: fans already know the original’s atmosphere, characters and dramatic shape. Creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart said the team’s primary goal was to preserve the atmosphere that made the original exceptional while modernizing many aspects of gameplay.
That is a balancing act, not a choice between copying and rewriting. A faithful remake must retain the emotional identity players remember, but a direct technical replica would leave the game constrained by the design conventions and hardware of its original era.
What was modernized
- Camera: the remake adopts an over-the-shoulder perspective, placing the player closer to James and changing how spaces, threats and exploration are framed.
- Combat: encounters were rebuilt rather than simply reproduced, allowing movement, aiming and enemy pressure to work with the new camera.
- Set-pieces: major moments were reworked for contemporary pacing and presentation while aiming to retain their atmospheric function.
- Performance: motion capture supports more detailed character acting and physicality.
- Rendering: Unreal Engine 5 features including Lumen and Nanite provide dynamic lighting and high-detail environments.
- Collaboration: original creators Akira Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito worked with Bloober, giving the remake a direct connection to the source game’s artistic foundations.
The result illustrates Bloober’s preservation-plus-modernization strategy. Its own horror craft supplies the atmosphere, encounter design and psychological focus, while the existing property imposes a responsibility to respect a known tone and fan expectations. That is fundamentally different from deciding every rule of a new universe at the outset.
Bloober’s production learning is iterative
The 2025 discussion of Cronos: The New Dawn described Bloober as using separate production groups and carrying lessons from one project into the next. The sequence shows how its capabilities expanded:

- Layers of Fear introduced the studio to horror. The project established the atmospheric and psychological foundation that would define its public identity.
- Observer added dialogue choices and a major actor. Bloober gained experience integrating more consequential interaction and a prominent performance into its horror structure.
- Blair Witch introduced a larger AI companion. The companion relationship added a more complex gameplay and narrative presence than a solitary protagonist.
- The Medium developed third-person cutscene skills. Its dual-world concept required the team to coordinate cinematic presentation across two versions of reality.
- Cronos: The New Dawn moves toward heavier gameplay and survival horror. The project applies that accumulated production knowledge to a more action-oriented format.
This progression helps explain why Bloober can work on both original concepts and a major remake. The studio is not repeating one template; it is stacking experience in atmosphere, interaction, companions, performance and third-person presentation, then applying those skills to a new thematic problem.

Bloober’s two kinds of creative risk
With an original game, Bloober controls the subject, world and tone, but must teach players what its symbols and rules mean. With a licensed remake, the studio inherits a canon and an audience that can identify changes immediately. The creative challenge shifts from invention alone to interpretation: which elements are essential to the original experience, and which can change without breaking it?
Silent Hill 2 demonstrates that interpretation through its camera, combat, set-pieces, motion capture and Unreal Engine 5 rendering. The modernization is substantial, yet the stated goal remains the preservation of atmosphere. That combination is the practical signature of Bloober’s licensed work.
Kojima Productions starts with ownership of the proposition
Kojima Productions’ original-property model removes the need to negotiate another studio’s established canon. It can make traversal the central activity, define a new social vocabulary such as “Porters,” and ask players to learn an unfamiliar world on its own terms. That freedom also creates a different risk: the studio must persuade players to care about a proposition that has no previous audience expectation to supply context.

The idea of connection appears in the setting, the player’s deliveries and the networked traces left by other players. The experience can be divisive because it asks for patience with systems that are unlike conventional action-game loops, but that unusual structure is part of the authored vision rather than an adaptation constraint.

Technology serves different ends
Bloober’s use of Unreal Engine 5 in the Silent Hill 2 remake is easy to describe in technical terms—Lumen for dynamic lighting and Nanite for detailed geometry—but its creative purpose is atmospheric continuity. Lighting, fog, surface detail and camera distance need to sustain dread in spaces that long-time players may already recognize.
Kojima Productions’ defining technical challenge is broader world coherence. In Death Stranding, terrain, traversal equipment, structures and asynchronous contributions must support the social theme of connection. The technology is valuable because it lets a large original world respond to the player’s route and to other players’ activity, not simply because it increases visual fidelity.
Neither approach is inherently more advanced. One uses technology to preserve and intensify a known horror mood; the other uses technology to make a new social and systemic idea playable at scale.

- Bloober’s About Us page describes a team of more than 250 people. That is a current organizational description, not a claim about the size of every individual project team.
- Piejko reported more than five million players for Layers of Fear. The statement identifies the audience milestone but does not specify a single platform or a laboratory-style measurement method.
- Kojima Productions’ official timeline reported more than five million Death Stranding copies sold on PC and PlayStation 4 by March 2021.
- The same timeline reported more than 10 million Porters connected worldwide by November 2022. “Connected” is an audience-participation measure, not the same metric as copies sold.
The figures are useful as scale indicators, but they should not be treated as a direct quality ranking. Bloober’s number describes a studio workforce and a reported player milestone; Kojima Productions’ numbers describe sales and connected users for a particular original property at specific dates.
Which studio’s approach is more likely to suit you?
| If you value… | You are more likely to prefer… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Psychological themes expressed through fear | Bloober Team | Its projects begin with a subject such as sacrifice, PTSD, body horror or duality and use horror to provoke reflection. |
| A familiar classic rebuilt with modern controls and presentation | Bloober Team’s remake work | Silent Hill 2 combines the original atmosphere with an over-the-shoulder camera, rebuilt combat, new performance capture and current rendering technology. |
| Original science-fiction worlds and unconventional systems | Kojima Productions | Death Stranding makes connection, traversal and social rebuilding part of the same authored design. |
| A strongly visible individual creative voice | Kojima Productions | Kojima’s close involvement across teams is central to how the studio presents and coordinates its projects. |
| Horror that is becoming more mechanically substantial | Bloober’s newer direction | The studio is adding heavier action and survival-horror elements while retaining its thematic horror foundation. |
The most useful way to compare a new release
When either studio announces a project, look past the label attached to it and ask five questions:
- What is the central subject or proposition? For Bloober, identify the psychological or sociological issue beneath the horror. For Kojima Productions, identify the world-building or social idea the systems are meant to express.
- Is the property original or licensed? A new Bloober game can establish its own rules; a remake must balance those rules against an existing audience’s memory. Kojima Productions’ original worlds have more freedom but must earn attention without inherited familiarity.
- Where does the emotion come from? Bloober commonly builds from atmosphere, vulnerability and moral consequence. Kojima Productions may derive emotion from relationships, traversal, scale and the gradual meaning of an unusual system.
- What changed mechanically? In a remake, camera, combat, set-pieces and performance technology can alter the feel even when the story remains recognizable. In an original game, the important question is whether the mechanics make the central idea tangible.
- What evidence is being measured? Sales, players, connected users and employee counts describe different things and should be read with their dates and definitions attached.
Using those questions produces a fairer comparison than asking which studio is simply “better.” Bloober’s strength is thematic horror craft that is expanding into more demanding action and survival systems. Kojima Productions’ strength is the coordination of a singular creative vision across original worlds, performances and mechanics. Their games differ because their production models ask different questions before development even begins.
