For faster combat in Bloodborne, use lock-on for one enemy, directional Circle quicksteps, short R1 strings, and immediate counterattacks after taking damage. Raise or lower Camera Sensitivity until right-stick tracking feels natural, disable Camera Auto-Adjust if walls keep stealing your view, and use L2 parries only when you can read an attack cue. These changes do not increase the game’s frame rate or create a measured percentage speed boost; they make your decisions and inputs more consistent.
Bloodborne’s official beginner advice describes the ideal approach as “smart offense.” Speed comes from controlled forward pressure: evade through an attack, spend only part of your stamina on offense, and keep enough resource to escape.

What to change before your first serious hunt
Open Bloodborne’s controls or game-options area and adjust the camera before changing your play style. Set Camera Sensitivity somewhere you can track a moving enemy without overcorrecting. There is no universally correct value: a setting that feels responsive to one player may feel twitchy to another. Test it while circling a lone enemy, then keep the setting long enough to build muscle memory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Camera Sensitivity
Increase sensitivity if the camera cannot keep up with an enemy moving around you. Reduce it if small right-stick movements swing past the target. The goal is not maximum sensitivity; it is reliable tracking during a quickstep, a retreat, and a camera turn in the same encounter.

Camera Auto-Adjust
Camera Auto-Adjust can help keep the view oriented, but correction against walls and scenery may hide an enemy in a narrow passage. Turn it off if the camera repeatedly shifts when you are trying to line up an attack. With it disabled, you must steer the camera yourself, but the view will stop making unrequested corrections. Large enemies can also make lock-on tracking obstructive; unlocking and manually steering is often clearer in those fights.
Axis inversion
Choose the vertical or horizontal axis direction that matches other games you play. Inversion does not alter combat timing, but unfamiliar camera behavior can make a correctly timed dodge feel late. Change it before practicing parries so you are not learning two control schemes at once.
Button remapping for accessibility
On PS4, go to Settings > Accessibility > Custom Button Assignments to swap the roles of two buttons at the system level. Sony warns that on-screen directions do not update to reflect the swap. Keep a written reminder beside you while learning, especially for Circle (evade), L2 (firearm), and R1 (attack).
Core controls and the inputs that create speed
| Input | Function | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| R3 | Lock on to a nearby enemy | Use against one tough target to enable dependable quicksteps and firearm aiming. |
| Circle + direction | Backstep, quickstep, or roll depending on movement and lock-on state | While locked on, a directional input produces the fast quickstep. Neutral Circle backsteps. |
| R1 | Fast right-hand attack | Use short strings, then stop with stamina available for an evade. |
| R2 | Heavy attack; hold for a charged attack | Charge behind a stationary or unaware enemy when you are setting up a visceral opportunity. |
| L1 | Transform the trick weapon | Transform during an attack, roll, or quickstep to keep pressure without opening a menu. |
| L2 | Fire the equipped firearm | Press just before an enemy attack lands to stagger it, then close in and press R1 for a visceral attack. |
Practice each input in an empty area before combining them. The important distinction is between a locked-on quickstep and an unlocked roll: the former keeps you oriented toward the target, while the latter gives you free movement and a manually controlled camera.
Lock-on, free movement, and the right choice for each fight
Use lock-on for a single dangerous enemy
Press R3 when one enemy is the immediate problem. Lock-on keeps your character facing that target, makes directional Circle inputs quicksteps, and enables more dependable firearm aiming. Move diagonally through an incoming swing rather than backing straight away. A diagonal quickstep can place you beside or behind the attacker, where a short R1 sequence is safer than a long retreat.
Break lock-on for groups
Lock-on can make a group fight worse because the camera keeps prioritizing one opponent while another approaches from outside the view. Unlock, use the right stick to maintain a wider perspective, and circle the group so that enemies remain in front of you. Re-lock when only one target remains.

Break lock-on for awkward boss cameras
Very large enemies can fill the screen or drag the camera toward a body part that blocks the attack you need to read. If the lock-on view obscures feet, weapons, or the arena edge, unlock and steer manually. This sacrifices the automatic facing of a quickstep but can restore the visual information needed to dodge.
The faster combat loop, step by step
- Select one target. Lock on with R3 when you want quicksteps and firearm aim. Stay unlocked when a group or large boss makes the camera unreliable.
- Read the attack. Watch the enemy’s wind-up rather than reacting to the weapon after it has already started moving.
- Evade through the line of attack. While locked on, press Circle plus a direction to quickstep diagonally through or around the swing. Do not automatically retreat straight backward.
- Spend a controlled attack string. Press R1 once to three times as the opening allows. Attacks, dodges, and running all consume stamina, and an empty bar leaves you exposed.
- Release pressure before the bar empties. Stop attacking early enough to quickstep again. A missed final hit is less costly than being unable to evade the next swing.
- Transform without pausing. Tap L1 during a suitable attack, roll, or quickstep to change the trick weapon’s form and continue the exchange.
- Counter damage immediately when appropriate. If you are hit, look at the orange portion of the health bar and attack during the rally window to recover some or most of that lost HP.
- Parry only a readable attack. Press L2 just before contact, then move close and press R1 when the enemy staggers for a visceral attack.
This loop is faster than button mashing because every action preserves the next option. You are attacking, but never spending so much stamina or positioning so poorly that the next dodge is impossible.
Rally: how to recover health after being hit
After damage, part of the health bar turns orange. That orange section represents health you can potentially regain by attacking promptly. This is the rally mechanic. The window is brief, so hesitation turns recoverable damage into permanent loss.
When to rally
Rally when the attacker is still in front of you, your stamina allows an attack and the next hit is not already coming. A quick R1 or a short string can return some or most of the lost HP. The exact amount depends on the exchange; do not assume every hit can be fully recovered.
When to disengage
Do not chase rally damage into a second enemy, a corner, or an empty stamina bar. If the orange portion appears while several enemies are active, unlock, create space, and recover safely instead. Rally is an incentive to take a measured risk, not a command to attack regardless of position.
Firearm parries and visceral attacks
The firearm is most reliable as a timing tool, not as a substitute for ordinary damage. Against a telegraphed melee attack, press L2 just before the blow would connect. A successful shot staggers the enemy. Close the distance and press R1 to perform the visceral attack.

Build the timing habit
- Choose one enemy whose attack animation you can see clearly.
- Watch the point at which the weapon begins its committed forward motion.
- Fire immediately before the hit would land, rather than at the beginning of the wind-up.
- After a stagger, move into range and press R1 once for the visceral.
Missing a parry costs ammunition and can leave you in recovery while the enemy continues its attack. If the timing is unclear, use a quickstep instead and study the animation for another attempt.
Trick-weapon transformations for continuous pressure
Every melee weapon has two forms. The forms give you different reach, speed, and crowd-control options, so changing form is part of the combat system rather than a menu choice. L1 transforms the weapon, including during an attack, roll, or quickstep.
R1 to L1 practice
Practice a simple R1-to-L1 sequence on a safe target. The first R1 establishes contact; L1 changes form while your offense is already moving. This can maintain pressure without the pause that comes from opening an equipment screen. Do not transform automatically after every hit: choose the form that fits the space and the number of enemies.

Use the form that gives you manageable spacing for one opponent, then switch when a group needs broader coverage or a different reach. The official beginner guidance emphasizes that the two forms provide options for individual encounters and crowd control. Your fastest attack is the one that lands while leaving room to evade, not necessarily the one with the shortest animation.
Stamina management: the limit behind every speed tip
Stamina powers attacks, dodges, and running. The most common beginner mistake is spending the entire bar on an R1 string, then discovering that Circle does nothing useful in the enemy’s recovery window.
A practical rule
Start with one R1, add a second or third only when the enemy is committed, and stop before the bar is empty. After a quickstep, decide whether the enemy is still vulnerable before attacking again. Running around an arena also consumes stamina, so do not sprint continuously while waiting for an opening.

Why retreating can be slower
Backing away from every attack creates a longer reset and often leaves you outside rally range. A diagonal quickstep through the strike keeps you close enough to punish while shortening the distance you must cover afterward. This is controlled aggression, not reckless trading.

Practice drills that make the settings useful
Camera drill
Lock onto one enemy and circle it without attacking. Adjust Camera Sensitivity until the target stays visible with small, deliberate right-stick corrections. Repeat with Camera Auto-Adjust on, then off, near a wall. Keep the option that gives you the clearer view in the spaces where you struggle.
Quickstep drill
Stand just outside an attack’s range. When the enemy commits, press Circle plus a diagonal direction and finish beside its flank. Do not attack for the first few repetitions; learn the distance and timing separately from damage.
Rally drill
Allow one safe, predictable hit, identify the orange health segment, and answer with a single R1. This teaches the visual cue without encouraging a long exchange.
Parry drill
Use one recognizable swing and fire only at the final moment before contact. If the shot misses, dodge and reset rather than firing repeatedly. Once the stagger is consistent, add the close-range R1 visceral.

Transformation drill
Perform R1, L1, quickstep, then R1 against a stationary or low-risk target. The aim is to make the transformation an intentional combat input rather than an accidental button press.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Circle produces a roll when you expected a quickstep | You are not locked on, or the directional input was missing. | Press R3 on a single target and add a direction to Circle. Use the roll deliberately when free movement is preferable. |
| The camera swings into a wall | Camera Auto-Adjust is correcting your view in a tight space. | Turn it off and steer manually, or unlock while repositioning. |
| You cannot dodge after attacking | The stamina bar was emptied by attacks, running, or earlier dodges. | Limit the string to one to three R1 attacks and stop sooner. |
| Parries fail even though the shot is aimed at the enemy | The firearm was fired too early or too late. | Fire just before the attack would land; practice one animation rather than a whole group. |
| Rally attempts cause a second hit | You attacked outside the safe rally window or while another enemy was active. | Take the rally only when the attacker is committed and your stamina supports an escape. |
| The lock-on view hides a boss’s attack | The target is too large or the camera is centered on an obstructive body part. | Unlock and manually track the boss until the attack is readable. |
Choosing between the main combat approaches
| Choice | Strength | Cost or risk | Best beginner use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locked-on quickstep | Fast directional evasion while facing one target; firearm aim is available. | Camera can become restrictive against groups and very large enemies. | One dangerous enemy in open or moderately sized space. |
| Unlocked roll and free camera | Wider awareness and manual control of spacing. | You must turn the camera and character yourself. | Groups, cramped camera angles, and bosses whose lock-on view obscures attacks. |
| Rally aggression | Can recover some or most recently lost HP. | Requires immediate attack and exposes you if the read is wrong. | One nearby attacker with a clear recovery animation. |
| Safe stamina recovery | Preserves the ability to dodge the next attack. | Gives up a possible rally opportunity. | Multiple enemies, poor positioning, or a nearly empty stamina bar. |
| Firearm parry | Creates a visceral opportunity and can end an exchange quickly. | Timing-sensitive; a miss leaves you vulnerable and spends ammunition. | Readable, committed attacks practiced one at a time. |
| Ordinary dodge | Reliable when the attack timing is uncertain. | Does not create the immediate visceral opening of a successful parry. | Learning a new enemy or avoiding an unclear animation. |
| Single-form attacks | Simple and predictable execution. | May not offer the best reach or crowd control for the situation. | Learning spacing before adding transformations. |
| Trick-weapon transformation | Changes reach and attack options without a menu pause. | Requires practice and a deliberate choice of form. | Maintaining pressure or adapting to a different enemy position. |
These are control choices, not measured performance upgrades. The available guidance does not establish a frame-rate increase, input-latency reduction, or quantified speed advantage for any setting.
A first-session setup and routine
- Choose your preferred camera sensitivity and axis direction.
- Test Camera Auto-Adjust near walls; disable it if corrections obscure enemies.
- Learn R3 lock-on, directional Circle quickstep, and neutral Circle backstep separately.
- Fight one enemy with one to three R1 attacks, stopping with stamina remaining.
- After taking a hit, identify the orange health segment and decide whether a single R1 rally is safe.
- Practice one firearm parry cue, then close in for the R1 visceral.
- Add L1 transformations only after the basic evade-and-attack rhythm feels consistent.
- Unlock against groups or camera-obscuring large enemies, then re-lock when one target is isolated.
The fastest sustainable style is therefore simple: read one attack, quickstep through it, land a short combination, and preserve the stamina and camera control needed for the next decision. As the official PlayStation guidance puts it, “Bloodborne rewards a smart offense.”
