The map let users enter a ZIP code, select a weapon and choose a groundburst or airburst scenario. Its results were simulations—not forecasts of what would happen in a real attack.
What Outrider’s simulator showed
Novak’s 2018 account described an interactive map that placed a hypothetical nuclear explosion at a location entered by the user. The reported weapon choices included North Korea’s Hwasong-14 and the Soviet Union’s Tsar Bomba. Users could also select whether the explosion occurred on the ground or in the air. The article characterized an airburst as more deadly than a ground burst, but did not publish the model assumptions or calculations behind that comparison.
The visual polish is the point behind the “prettiest nuclear bomb simulator” framing: an inviting map interface made catastrophic consequences easier to picture. That contrast should not obscure what the map represented—modeled effects of a hypothetical scenario, not a real event or a precise prediction.
What the Los Angeles example did—and did not—mean
Novak reported that one Los Angeles simulation represented roughly 3.4 million deaths. That was an approximate, scenario-specific number shown in the 2018 article, not an observed death toll or a general estimate for any nuclear attack on Los Angeles. The report did not provide enough information about the model’s assumptions, uncertainty, or validation to treat the figure as a reliable casualty forecast.

How the project related to NUKEMAP
Outrider’s simulator was presented as similar to NUKEMAP, the nuclear-effects map created by nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein. The 2018 report said Wellerstein inspired Outrider’s project and consulted on it. Outrider’s profile identifies him as a nuclear historian and Stevens Institute of Technology professor; Outrider also says NUKEMAP has been used by more than 25 million people globally, without specifying a year for that figure.
The available descriptions do not establish which tool is more accurate or more complete. A meaningful comparison would require current information about each tool’s location and weapon options, burst settings, displayed effects, and published modeling assumptions—not just a similar map interface.

Can you use the Outrider simulator today?
Outrider’s project listing still names the Nuclear Bomb Blast Simulator, but a listing does not show that its interactive map is currently operating. Older interactive URLs surfaced in search results returned 404, and the tool’s current URL, availability, and present-day features are unresolved. The 2018 controls described above should therefore be understood as historical, not as a confirmed list of features available now.

A map can make consequences tangible, but an output depends on the scenario and the model producing it. Novak’s article does not give the assumptions, uncertainty bounds, or validation study needed to assess the simulator as a casualty-prediction tool. Its scenarios are useful for visualizing the scale and potential effects of nuclear weapons; they should not be mistaken for a precise account of what would happen at a particular address.
