Bloomtown: A Different Story received generally favorable reviews, but the critic sample is small and opinions differ on how well its combat and systems hold up. Metacritic showed a 76/100 Metascore from eight critic reviews when checked on October 8, 2026. Critics most often praised its atmosphere, pixel-art presentation, soundtrack, and blend of small-town activities with supernatural, turn-based RPG combat; recurring reservations include combat that can feel tedious, uneven depth, and familiar Persona-like influences.
What is Bloomtown: A Different Story?
Bloomtown: A Different Story is a narrative JRPG set in a version of 1960s Americana. Emily and her younger brother Chester visit their grandfather’s town as children begin disappearing and nightmares grow more real. Players explore the town and its supernatural “Underside,” fight demons in turn-based encounters, capture and fuse creatures, and take part in everyday activities such as gym training, work, gardening, and making friends. The contrast between community life and a supernatural threat is central to the game’s identity. Steam’s listing and the PlayStation Store page describe its setting and features.

What do critics praise?
Positive reviews tend to value the combination of recognizable RPG ideas rather than any single isolated feature. Critics highlighted the small-town atmosphere, pixel art and animation, soundtrack, and combat that some found engaging or surprisingly deep. Checkpoint Gaming’s review, dated October 1, 2024, called it “a very special game, and one of 2024’s hidden gems.” Try Hard Guides praised its mix of creature collection and JRPG conventions on September 24, 2024, while also noting that the writing moves quickly and character development could use more room.
The game’s daily-life layer gives the battles a different context from a conventional dungeon-focused RPG: time spent around town, building relationships, and tending to activities is part of the experience, not merely a break between fights. For critics who enjoy that tonal shift and the visual style, those familiar ingredients add charm rather than feeling like a checklist.

What are the main criticisms?
The clearest recurring concern is execution: some critics found the combat repetitive or less satisfying than the game’s premise suggests. Hardcore Gamer’s September 26, 2024 review described it as “lackluster” and “often tedious.” Other mixed excerpts raised concerns about the game losing momentum after its introduction or about some systems lacking depth. These are not universal judgments, but they mark the main risk for players who prioritize tactical variety and a consistently compelling combat loop.
Some reviewers also found the influence of Persona conspicuous. That comparison is useful for setting expectations about the mix of social routines and supernatural battles, but it does not mean the two games are equivalent in scale, structure, or execution. Bloomtown combines those familiar conventions with creature capture and fusion, alongside a more compact small-town framing.

How did the review scores break down?
Metacritic’s all-platform page showed a 76/100 Metascore from eight critic reviews, labeled “Generally Favorable,” on October 8, 2026. Its PC excerpt list showed five positive, three mixed, and no negative reviews; those are rounded category percentages on the page, not a larger sample. The Switch-filtered page separately showed a 76/100 from five critic reviews. The platform-specific result is a different, smaller set and should not be combined with the all-platform score. Metacritic’s overview and critic listings can change as reviews are added or its database is updated, so treat these as dated snapshots rather than fixed ratings.
| Measure | Snapshot | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic, all platforms | 76/100 from 8 critic reviews; checked October 8, 2026 | Critic aggregate, labeled “Generally Favorable” |

Steam’s figures are another snapshot and can change; they offer a reader sentiment signal, not a substitute for critic reviews or a guarantee that a particular player will enjoy the game. Steam’s Bloomtown listing displays the user-review data.

Is Bloomtown worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal if you want a stylish, story-led RPG that alternates between everyday town life and supernatural encounters, and you enjoy collecting or fusing creatures. The reviews suggest more caution if you need combat to remain consistently varied, or if familiar Persona-like structures are a drawback rather than a comfort. The split is less about whether the premise is appealing and more about whether its battle and progression systems sustain that appeal.
Where can you play it?
Store listings identify versions for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5; Metacritic’s platform overview also enumerates Nintendo Switch and Xbox platforms. The official PlayStation page lists a free PS5 demo. Availability can depend on region and storefront, so check the relevant listing for your location. Steam lists the PC game and soundtrack/supporter content; the Epic Games Store listing included a critic excerpt from TheSixthAxis, but the product was shown as unavailable when checked. Epic Games Store’s listing reproduces TheSixthAxis’s description of “a hugely enjoyable story, slick script, bombastic battles, and the freedom to interact with the world in odd and inventive ways.”
