Nintendo lists one player on one Switch system, while the publisher, Steam, and Xbox also classify it as single-player. A second controller does not turn the adventure into local co-op, and changing the Switch from TV to tabletop or handheld mode does not change the player count.
Does Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen have local co-op?
There is no supported local multiplayer in the official listings currently available for Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen. Nintendo’s Switch store entry specifies “Single system (1),” and Nintendo Australia lists “Local: 1.” PM Studios’ title page labels the game “Single Player.” The Steam and Xbox listings use the same single-player classification.

That wording describes the software’s supported player count, not merely the number of controllers included with a console. The game is designed for one active player, one progression path and one game session. No second-player option, co-op campaign, split-screen mode, shared-control mode or local multiplayer menu is listed.

These listings are consistent with one another. They do not indicate that an additional Joy-Con, Pro Controller or other gamepad can join the adventure.

Why Switch TV, tabletop and handheld modes do not add a player
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld as supported Switch play modes. Those are ways to display and control the same one-player game; they are not multiplayer settings.

What happens if you connect a second controller?
A second controller can be paired with a Switch, Xbox or PC at the system level, but pairing hardware is not the same as a game supporting another player. In this title, the official player count gives no second-player slot to join.
There is no second character to select
The game’s listings do not describe a companion character, shared Bluey control, guest profile or drop-in/drop-out function. The intended session has one player controlling the adventure. A second person can watch, offer suggestions or take the controller between sections, but that is an informal household arrangement rather than a feature implemented by the game.
There is no co-op save or shared progression
Because the product is classified as single-player, do not expect a separate co-op campaign, a second save slot tied to another controller or a way for two players to earn progress simultaneously. Extra controllers are therefore not a solution if your purchase decision depends on two people playing together at once.

Nine adventure-filled levels
The official launch announcement describes nine adventure-filled levels. Exploration, puzzles and mini-quests provide the structure, with varied environments rather than a competitive multiplayer arena. The level count is a product specification from the official announcement, not an independent review statistic.
A solo story designed for shared viewing
The imaginative premise can work well as a family viewing experience even though only one person controls the game. A child can play while another family member helps solve a puzzle verbally or follows the story on the television. That kind of participation does not alter the software’s one-player status, but it may explain why the game can still be appealing in a room with more than one person.
Release dates and platforms
The release schedule differs between mobile and console/PC editions, so the date on a storefront depends on where you intend to play.

The mobile announcement described a free experience with an optional one-off payment to unlock all levels. That was the announced launch model; pricing, availability and terms can vary by country and may change, so check the relevant mobile storefront before downloading.

Should you buy it if you need a two-player game?
Choose it for a solo Bluey adventure
The game is a reasonable fit if one person will hold the controls and you want an original Bluey story with exploration, puzzles and mini-quests. The Switch version supports all three standard display configurations, and the console/PC listings identify the same solo format.
Do not buy an extra controller expecting co-op
If your requirement is simultaneous play for two people, an additional controller will not satisfy it. The official listings do not promise local co-op, and the one-player designation appears consistently across Nintendo, PM Studios, Steam and Xbox.
Check the exact edition before paying
Store pages can differ by region and platform. Confirm the edition, release date and player-count field on the storefront you plan to use. For Switch, look specifically for the single-system player count; for PC and Xbox, look for the single-player classification. Do not infer multiplayer support from a platform’s ability to connect multiple controllers.
Practical setup for one-player Switch sessions
- Install the game on the Switch edition you purchased and start it from the Home menu.
- Choose TV, tabletop or handheld play according to how you want to view the game. These choices affect display and controller arrangement only.
- Use one active controller configuration and begin the story. The game’s store listing provides no second-player join command.
- If another person is helping, let them suggest solutions or hand over the controller between activities rather than searching for a co-op prompt that the software does not advertise.
If the game appears not to recognize a second controller, that behavior is expected for a single-player title rather than evidence that your console is malfunctioning. Test the controller in another multiplayer game if you need to diagnose the hardware separately.

Common multiplayer questions
Can two people play on one Switch by taking turns?
Two people can physically take turns with one controller, but the game does not list a turn-based or shared-player mode. Only one player is supported by the software at a time.
Does Switch 2 add local co-op?
PM Studios lists Switch 2 among the platforms, but its title page still classifies the game as single-player. No Switch 2-specific co-op feature is listed.
Is there online multiplayer?
No online multiplayer mode is identified in the official Nintendo, PM Studios, Steam or Xbox descriptions. Those pages consistently present the game as single-player.
Could a future update change this?
It is possible for a game’s features to change after launch, but no future co-op update is announced in the information available here. Treat the current store descriptions as the reliable buying information and recheck official patch notes if a later announcement claims multiplayer support.
