bmp.dll errors usually appear when an application starts and Windows cannot load the DLL it expects. The exact message may say:
This application failed to start because bmp.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Other common variants include:
- “The program can’t start because bmp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading bmp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file bmp.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “bmp.dll was not found.”
- “bmp.dll could not be located.”
- “Cannot register bmp.dll.”
Do not begin by downloading a replacement file. The name bmp.dll is not unique enough to identify one universal Windows component. A reported metadata lineage describes it as “2BP to BMP file converter,” associated with Microsoft ActiveSync, while another product lineage also uses the same filename. The application that requests the file matters more than the filename.

- The error names Microsoft ActiveSync or a Windows Mobile synchronization tool: reinstall ActiveSync from Microsoft’s official ActiveSync 4.5 download page. It supplies
setup.msi, but Microsoft officially supports ActiveSync on Windows XP SP2 or earlier, not current Windows 10 or Windows 11. - The error names a game or launcher: use the launcher’s verify, repair, or scan-files option, then reinstall the game if necessary.
- The error appears when opening a particular older application: repair or reinstall that exact application from its vendor or original installation media.
- The file disappeared after antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error says “specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist, but one of its dependencies may be missing or incompatible.
- The file is actually
libpixbufloader-bmp.dll: that is a differently named file from another software ecosystem. Do not substitutebmp.dll. - Several Windows components are failing: run DISM and SFC after checking the application installation.
- The problem began after a driver, update, or system change: try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
Before making changes, record the full error, the requesting executable’s path, your Windows version, and whether the problem began after reinstalling, updating, cleaning, or antivirus detection.
What bmp.dll is, and what it is not
bmp.dll is not verified as a protected Windows system file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET runtime. Do not assume that an error appearing on Windows means the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
The strongest documented association describes a Microsoft ActiveSync component named “2BP to BMP file converter.” That association comes from file metadata records rather than a Microsoft component manifest, so it should be treated as an application lineage, not proof that every bmp.dll belongs to ActiveSync.

A file with the same basename can be supplied by unrelated software. Copying whichever bmp.dll you find online may give Windows the wrong product, wrong architecture, or a damaged file.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that requests bmp.dll
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Identify the owning application
- Read the complete error message and note the application name.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escif the program remains listed. - On the Processes tab, right-click the application and select Open file location.
- Note the folder containing the requesting
.exe. - Right-click the executable, select Properties, and open the Details tab.
- Record the product name, publisher, and file description if present.
If the error appears during startup and does not show the executable, check the application’s shortcut:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- The executable path before any command-line switches identifies the application directory.
Repair the application
If the program appears under installed applications:
- Press
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every older program provides a Repair button. If it does not:

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Reinstall from a trusted source
If repair fails:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer, original disc, or trusted deployment media.
- Install the same application edition and architecture required by the original program.
- Launch the program before restoring custom settings or plug-ins.
For Microsoft ActiveSync, use Microsoft’s official setup.msi download. ActiveSync is legacy software and Microsoft states that it works only with Windows XP SP2 or earlier. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, repeated DLL replacement is not a reliable compatibility solution. A supported virtual machine, an older compatible computer, or replacement synchronization software may be more practical.
A reinstall is successful when the application opens without the bmp.dll message and its normal functions work. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Repair a game or launcher installation
If the error belongs to a game, do not use an ActiveSync file or a generic DLL download.
Most launchers provide a file-repair function:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or equivalent.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart the launcher and start the game.
If there is no repair option:
- Uninstall the game.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the launcher or the game publisher’s official installer.
- Test the game before adding modifications, overlays, or third-party plug-ins.
If the error started after installing a mod, remove the mod and test the unmodified application. The definitive fix for an application-private DLL is restoring the application that owns it.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate application DLL, or it may correctly remove a malicious file pretending to be a program component. Restore a file only when you can confirm that it came from the application’s legitimate installer.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected application folder.
- Select the detection to expand its details.
- Confirm the file path and detected item.
- If the file is clearly from the trusted application installation and the vendor confirms it is safe, choose Restore or Allow on device where available.
- Reinstall the application if there is any uncertainty.
Do not restore a DLL merely because its filename matches the error. If the file appeared after downloading a purported DLL, remove it and perform a full Windows Security scan. Reinstall the parent application from trusted media instead.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean every application DLL must be 64-bit. Many older applications are 32-bit and need 32-bit private DLLs beside their own executable.
Check the application:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the requesting
.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note the product information.
- Check the vendor’s documentation for the supported architecture.
- Reinstall the matching application edition if the wrong edition was installed.
Do not copy application DLLs into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 to solve an architecture problem. Windows uses these directories for system components and applies file-system redirection for 32-bit programs. Application-private DLLs should normally remain in the application’s own directory.
Recommended Free Tools
An error such as “not designed to run on Windows” or “incorrect version” usually points to corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible legacy binary. It does not prove that the file is simply missing.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that bmp.dll itself is absent, but it can also mean Windows found bmp.dll and could not load something that bmp.dll requires.
Use this sequence:
- Confirm that the application folder contains the expected files from the official installation.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates and restart.
- Reinstall the parent application and any prerequisites documented by its vendor.
- Temporarily remove recently added plug-ins, shell extensions, or codec packs.
- Check Event Viewer for an application error at the time of the failure:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error matching the application name.
Do not download individual runtime files to guess at the missing dependency. The application installer is the correct source for application-private components.
Fix 6: Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself shows multiple corruption symptoms, system tools fail, updates are damaged, or several unrelated programs stop working. They will not normally restore a third-party ActiveSync or application-private bmp.dll.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the application repair steps and review the CBS log or Microsoft support guidance rather than replacing bmp.dll manually.
If you regularly hunt through component versions, compare repair results, or repeat DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported issues; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns bmp.dll.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the evidence points there
A display, scanner, camera, or mobile-device driver may be involved if the application fails immediately after a device or driver change. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns bmp.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To check Device Manager:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the application, such as Portable Devices, Imaging devices, Display adapters, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the failure began immediately after a driver update, choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a full driver reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Do not select a driver-removal option unless the hardware vendor specifically instructs you to.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Reinstall the parent application afterward.
When manually hunting through many driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; the free scan identifies what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific application that requests bmp.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver, system component, or application change and an older restore point is available.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not guarantee recovery of an application’s private DLL, so reinstall the affected application afterward if the error remains.

Should you run regsvr32 bmp.dll
Normally, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. A converter, codec, or application-private library does not become usable merely because it was registered.
Running this command:
regsvr32 bmp.dll
can produce an entry-point or registration error. That result does not prove the DLL is damaged.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s instructions specifically identify the DLL as a self-registering component and provide the correct architecture and path. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the application.
What not to do
Avoid these common failed repairs:
- Do not download
bmp.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy an unknown file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not replace a 32-bit application DLL with a 64-bit file.
- Do not assume every
bmp.dllbelongs to Microsoft ActiveSync. - Do not confuse
bmp.dllwithlibpixbufloader-bmp.dll. - Do not use SFC as the primary way to restore a third-party application file.
- Do not run
regsvr32without confirming that registration applies. - Do not disable antivirus permanently to make an application start.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and they often leave the original installation problem unresolved. Safe sources are the application vendor, original installation media, Microsoft’s official ActiveSync download, Windows Update, and Microsoft’s built-in repair tools.
Prevention after the repair
Once the program works:
- Keep the installer and license information for older software in a known location.
- Create a restore point before installing legacy applications or drivers.
- Keep Windows Security enabled.
- Avoid DLL-cleaner utilities and registry cleaners.
- Do not overwrite application folders with files from another computer.
- Record the application version and installation path before making changes.
- Use the application’s own update, repair, or file-verification feature.
- For obsolete software such as ActiveSync, consider isolating it on a compatible system or virtual machine rather than forcing it onto a current Windows installation.
FAQ
Is bmp.dll a Windows system file?
There is no verified evidence that every bmp.dll is a protected Windows system component. The filename is associated with application software, including a reported ActiveSync-related lineage. Identify the requesting executable before choosing a repair.
Does bmp.dll belong to Microsoft ActiveSync?
A documented metadata lineage describes bmp.dll as a “2BP to BMP file converter” associated with Microsoft ActiveSync. The same basename is also associated with other software, so the error path must confirm ownership.
Can I download bmp.dll and place it in System32?
No. That can create version conflicts, architecture problems, and security risks. Reinstall the application that requests the file.
Will SFC repair bmp.dll?
Usually not if the file belongs to ActiveSync or another application. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not ordinary application-private DLLs.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when bmp.dll is present?
A dependency required by bmp.dll may be missing or incompatible. Reinstall the parent application and its documented prerequisites.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is ActiveSync compatible with Windows 11?
Microsoft officially states that ActiveSync works with Windows XP SP2 or earlier. Its installer may not function correctly on modern Windows, so use a compatible environment or replacement synchronization software when possible.
Should I register bmp.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that support registration entry points. Most application converter and runtime libraries do not.
What information should I provide to support?
Provide the complete error text, requesting executable path, application version, Windows version, installation directory, and the change that preceded the failure. Also note whether Windows Security quarantined the file and whether reinstalling the parent application changed the error.
