Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 has the better secret design for most players. Its branching campaign, one-run chapter choices, optional chapters, alternate routes and non-mandatory platforming make exploration affect the shape of a playthrough. The original Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the better fit if you want a focused, traditional boomer-shooter hunt through fixed levels, where every side corridor and suspicious-looking room may hide a collectible.
That is the important distinction: Boltgun 2 offers more types of discovery and stronger reasons to replay, while Boltgun delivers a cleaner and more predictable secret-hunting loop. Neither game has a verified, authoritative total-secret count that can settle the question by arithmetic alone.

The short answer: Boltgun 2 wins on variety, Boltgun wins on focus
The sequel is built around secrets as part of its campaign structure rather than treating them only as objects tucked into otherwise linear missions. The official Steam description calls it a “Branching Campaign,” with players choosing their own path and each branch containing unique levels. Reviews also describe alternating chapters that can be selected only once per playthrough; some choices unlock secret optional chapters containing further hidden collectibles.

That design changes what “finding everything” means. In Boltgun 2, a complete secret hunt may require learning which route to take, replaying the campaign to select a different chapter, and checking movement-heavy side areas in addition to searching rooms. The reward is a campaign that can unfold differently on another run.

The first Boltgun takes the classic approach. Its secret collectibles are distributed throughout every level, and Windows Central identifies them as a major source of replay value. You generally replay an authored stage, inspect its side paths and unusual corners, and try to leave with a cleaner collectible record. The structure is easier to understand and often easier to plan around, even if it is less ambitious.

How Boltgun 2 makes secrets part of the campaign
Branch choices create missable content by design
Boltgun 2’s official Steam listing says that you choose your path through a campaign whose branches contain unique levels. This is more consequential than choosing between two doors inside one mission: a route decision can determine which chapter you play and which secrets are available to find.
Alex Cope’s Windows Central review gives the clearest description of the system: the game has “alternating chapters you can only select once per playthrough,” and those choices can “sometimes unlock secret optional chapters where you can find more hidden collectibles.” In practical terms, finishing a run without a particular optional chapter does not necessarily mean you overlooked a switch. The chapter may belong to another branch.
That distinction matters when using a guide. A checklist that labels an item “missed” can be misleading if the item is tied to a different chapter selection. Record the route you took before assuming that a collectible is hidden somewhere in the level you are currently replaying.
Optional chapters are larger secrets than a concealed room
In a conventional boomer shooter, a secret usually expands a level by a room, alcove or short detour. Boltgun 2 can hide an optional chapter behind the campaign’s route logic. The discovery is therefore two-layered: first identify the condition or path that unlocks the chapter, then explore that chapter for its own hidden items.
This gives the sequel a stronger sense of payoff for players who like secrets that reveal new content rather than merely adding another entry to a completion list. It also makes the game less transparent. A player can search every visible corner of one run and still not have seen the full set of environments.

Levels support more than one way through
GamesRadar’s preview quotes the developers describing levels as “huge,” “claustrophobic and winding or mazelike,” with some sections completable “in different orders.” Because this is preview material rather than a complete map of the finished game, it should not be read as a promise that every mission has a fully open layout. It does, however, support the broader observation that Boltgun 2 is designed to make route choice and orientation part of exploration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor secret hunters, winding layouts create different search questions from those in the original: Did you take the upper route before the arena? Did a side objective open a return path? Is that dead end really a dead end, or does it become reachable after a switch changes the level? The sequel’s best secrets ask you to understand the level’s structure, not just sweep its walls.
Platforming is an intentional hiding place
Finger Guns describes non-mandatory platforming sections that function as hiding places for secrets and collectibles. These areas broaden the search beyond combat spaces. Looking behind a pillar is no longer enough; you may need to notice a ledge, make an optional jump, or follow a route that the main objective never requires.
Optional platforming also creates a different kind of risk. A player who prefers to keep moving through fights may never test an apparently inconvenient jump, while an explorer will treat unusual geometry as a clue. If your definition of a good secret includes movement challenges and environmental reading, Boltgun 2 has the clear advantage.
What secrets feel like in the original Boltgun
A traditional side-path-and-room search
The original Boltgun’s secret design is easier to summarize: each level contains collectibles, and replay value comes largely from finding them. Its spaces are authored around a familiar retro-FPS rhythm of combat arenas, connecting corridors and side rooms. After an encounter, you can backtrack, inspect an alcove, and test whether an odd-looking route leads to a hidden pickup.
That simplicity is a strength rather than a deficiency. The game gives you a clear mental model for the hunt. If you missed an item, the likely explanation is that you failed to inspect a branch, not that the campaign sent you down an incompatible chapter path. Players who enjoy methodically clearing one level at a time may find the original more satisfying because progress is easier to attribute to their own observation.

Collectible completion drives the replay loop
Windows Central explicitly frames the original’s secret collectibles as a source of replay value. The appeal is cumulative: a first run teaches you the level, a second run checks suspicious corners, and later attempts fill gaps in your collection. The structure suits players who like completing a mission record without having to replay a whole campaign simply to access a different branch.
The available evidence does not establish a reward table that can be compared item-for-item with Boltgun 2. It is therefore safer to describe the original’s secret hunt as collectible-driven rather than claim that every hidden item grants a particular upgrade, weapon or resource.
Why the original can feel more coherent
A fixed-level secret system keeps exploration and combat in the same frame. You learn the boundaries of a mission, identify its likely side routes, and gradually build a complete map in your head. There is less structural overhead: no need to remember which campaign branch you selected or whether an inaccessible chapter belongs to a later run.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a player who regards secrets as a satisfying cleanup pass after the main action, that coherence may be preferable to Boltgun 2’s wider system. The original does not need to surprise you with a different campaign shape to make a second search worthwhile; its levels are already dense enough to reward careful inspection.
Which game has more secrets?
No authoritative, complete total for both games has been established, so a numerical winner cannot be declared responsibly. Boltgun 2’s branch structure means that even defining “the total” requires deciding whether to count only unique collectibles, optional chapters, route-specific encounters, or all of them together.
One guide from iTechGuides reports 17 Secrets and 3 Purity Seals in the “There Is Only War” mission. That figure applies to one mission branch and should not be presented as Boltgun 2’s full-game count. It is useful as evidence that an individual branch can contain a substantial checklist, not as proof that the sequel has a specific number more or fewer than the original.

The original has no directly comparable published statistic in the available evidence. Claims such as “Boltgun 2 has exactly twice as many secrets” would therefore go beyond what is documented. The stronger, supportable conclusion is qualitative: the sequel has more categories of secret access, while the original concentrates its secrets within its levels.

Replay value: different runs versus better runs
Boltgun 2 requires structural replay
Boltgun 2’s replay value is partly about seeing content that a previous run could not contain. If you select one alternating chapter, you may need another campaign run to select its counterpart. Secret optional chapters and their collectibles can therefore be locked behind route decisions rather than poor searching.
This is ideal for players who enjoy comparing routes and gradually building a complete campaign picture. It is less ideal if you want one definitive run in which every collectible can be collected before the credits. The sequel’s design treats replay as a way to access parallel content, not merely as a second attempt at the same map.
Boltgun rewards increasingly thorough runs
In the original, replay is more directly tied to execution and observation. You can revisit a level with better knowledge, search more carefully and improve your completion record. The pleasure is closer to solving a spatial puzzle than to branching narrative discovery.
That makes the original a strong choice for short sessions. You can target a particular mission, recover its missing collectibles and stop without committing to a campaign route plan. Boltgun 2 offers more long-form variety, but the first game offers a cleaner “one level, one checklist” rhythm.
What do the secrets reward?
Available reviews describe Boltgun 2’s secrets as offering collectibles, power-ups, ammunition or utility rewards. That range matters because a hidden area can affect both completion and the immediate run. Finding a secret may give you a practical resource, a collectible to record, or access to an optional piece of content.

The evidence for the original supports collectible-driven replay but does not provide a directly comparable reward table. Do not assume that an item in one game has an equivalent function in the other. If your priority is combat advantage, inspect the specific mission and reward descriptions available in the game; if your priority is exploration, the route and access conditions are the more meaningful distinction.
Which game should you choose?
Choose Boltgun 2 if you want systemic exploration
- You enjoy choosing between campaign routes and seeing how those choices alter the run.
- You are willing to replay chapters to access alternating content and optional secret stages.
- You like platforming, hidden switches and unusual geometry as much as conventional side rooms.
- You want secrets that can reveal new levels or change the shape of a campaign, not only add collectibles.
- You prefer a broad exploration game even when a single playthrough cannot show everything.
Choose Boltgun if you want a classic secret sweep
- You prefer fixed levels with a clear beginning, end and collectible checklist.
- You enjoy inspecting side corridors and rooms without tracking branch-specific campaign choices.
- You want replay to mean improving your search of a known mission rather than opening a different chapter.
- You value a focused retro-FPS loop in which secrets stay closely tied to the authored level.
- You would find route-exclusive content frustrating when trying to complete everything in one run.
Do you need to play Boltgun before Boltgun 2?
You do not need the first game to understand the secret systems compared here. Boltgun 2’s branching campaign can be evaluated on its own terms: choose a route, explore its levels, and replay to see alternatives. Starting with the original is useful only if you want to experience the more traditional version of the secret hunt before moving to the sequel’s broader structure.
Playing the first game first can also clarify your personal preference. If you enjoy checking every side room in a fixed stage, Boltgun may be the better fit even after you understand what the sequel adds. If you find that structure too predictable and want route choices, optional chapters and platforming detours, Boltgun 2 is the more suitable starting point.
A practical secret-hunting plan for each game
Boltgun 2 checklist
- Record your campaign choice. Note which alternating chapter or route you selected before entering the mission.
- Explore before assuming a collectible is missing. Check side corridors, hidden switches, high ledges and optional platforming spaces.
- Mark chapter-specific discoveries separately. Keep a list for the route you are currently playing so you do not confuse unavailable content with an overlooked item.
- Finish the branch, then compare routes. On a later run, choose the other chapter where the campaign allows it.
- Use mission-specific counts cautiously. A figure such as 17 Secrets and 3 Purity Seals for “There Is Only War” applies to that reported branch, not automatically to the whole game.
Boltgun checklist
- Clear the combat space. Searching after the fight reduces the chance that an enemy or objective interrupts your inspection.
- Inspect every side route. Check dead ends, rooms that seem too small to matter and corridors that do not advance the objective.
- Backtrack after major encounters. Revisit nearby spaces before leaving the level, especially if a new route has opened.
- Record the level and room. A simple location note is enough to make a later cleanup run efficient.
- Replay for completion. Treat each return as a targeted collectible sweep rather than expecting a new campaign branch.
The final verdict
Boltgun 2 has better secrets if “better” means broader discovery, more varied access conditions and stronger replay structure. Branching levels, alternating chapters, optional secret chapters and platforming detours make exploration part of the campaign’s architecture. You are not merely searching a map; you are learning how the campaign can be shaped.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun remains the better secret-hunting game for players who want a concentrated classic-FPS experience. Its collectible-driven replay loop is easier to understand, easier to track and less dependent on route-exclusive content. The sequel wins the comparison overall, but the original wins on clarity and traditional secret-hunt discipline.
