Bonfire Studios unveiled Arkheron on January 15, 2025, marking the independent developer’s first game announcement. The “eight years” refers to the studio’s age: Bonfire was founded in 2016, while CEO Rob Pardo said substantive work on Arkheron began in 2018. The game is a team-based PvP fantasy title about fighting up a haunted tower and adapting builds with collected items.
What did Bonfire Studios announce?
Bonfire emerged from stealth with Arkheron, its debut game, in an exclusive published by GamesBeat on January 15, 2025. The headline’s eight-year span runs from the studio’s 2016 founding to the announcement; it does not mean the game had been in production for eight years.
Pardo told GamesBeat that the studio spent about a year and a half setting up and prototyping before the real work on Arkheron began in 2018. At the reveal, he described the game as having been in development for roughly six years. He also said the team was already in mid-development when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
What kind of game is Arkheron?
Arkheron is a fast-paced, isometric team PvP game set in a haunted tower. Players form squads of three, gather Relics that alter their builds, and fight rival players and monsters while trying to climb toward the summit. Bonfire’s original reveal described the game as top-down team PvP in a dark fantasy world; the current Steam listing gives the more specific isometric description.

The game’s identity is best conveyed through its structure rather than a single genre label: squads fight, collect items, and adjust their abilities as a match unfolds. Pardo said at reveal that the studio struggled to describe the game in a way that gave potential players an accurate picture, and cautioned against reducing it to a conventional shooter or MOBA.
How do the Spires and Ascension modes differ?

Bonfire’s February 2026 FAQ specifies 45 players entering a match, while Steam describes Ascension as 15 three-player teams. The FAQ also says completing a four-item Relic set transforms a player into an Eternal, granting an additional ability. Relics and team combinations therefore shape a run rather than locking players into one fixed build.

When can players try Arkheron?
The September 25–27, 2026 crossplay beta has ended. Bonfire’s official play page says matchmaking queues for Ascension and Spires are closed and directs interested players to join the waitlist for future playtests. The beta ran on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
As of October 4, 2026, Steam still listed Arkheron as “Coming soon,” and PC Gamer reported on September 22, 2026 that no release date had been determined. There is no firm launch date to plan around.

Which platforms and business details are confirmed?
Bonfire’s February 2026 FAQ described planned availability on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox; those same platform families were used for the September beta. Steam names Bonfire Studios and DRIMAGE as publishers. GamesBeat reported in January 2025 that HYBE IM would publish the game in Korea and Japan; the available store credit does not establish DRIMAGE’s geographic or contractual role.
Bonfire said in its February 2026 FAQ that Arkheron would not be free-to-play, but did not disclose its price or pricing model. GamesBeat reported that Bonfire had raised $25 million from Andreessen Horowitz and Riot Games when it started in 2018, and reported additional investment from Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, and Altos Ventures around the 2025 reveal; Pardo did not disclose the newer round’s total.

Who is behind Bonfire Studios?
Rob Pardo co-founded Bonfire and is its CEO. Before founding the studio, he held senior creative roles at Blizzard. GamesBeat noted that Bonfire veterans had worked on Diablo, Overwatch, StarCraft, and World of Warcraft. That background explains the team’s industry experience, but Arkheron is a new game with its own format and identity.
