There is no single best Boom Beach base layout: the right design depends on your Headquarters (HQ) level, the defenses you have unlocked, and the attacks you need to answer. Build around the HQ—the attacker’s win condition—then arrange supporting defenses, mines, Gadgets and, at HQ29, your Garrison so an assault has to contend with them on its way in.
Start with your HQ level and available buildings
Your HQ determines which buildings are available and their maximum levels. Because destroying the HQ wins an attack—and damage to it increases as other buildings are destroyed—your first design question is how your current defenses can make an HQ assault costly. Supercell calls the Headquarters “the beating heart of your base.” See Supercell Support’s Buildings & Boats guide for the game’s building and layout information.
Do not copy a high-level island if your own HQ does not have the same defenses or building levels. A layout is only useful when it fits what you can actually place.
Arrange defenses to support the HQ
Think in terms of coverage and approach, not a decorative or symmetrical pattern. Place defenses so that reaching the HQ brings attackers into range of multiple supporting defenses where your available buildings permit it. Consider the routes an attacker is likely to take, and use mines to threaten likely rush paths. Community strategy advice, including placing mines around the HQ against Warrior rushes, can suggest tactics, but it is not an official guarantee or a universally optimal layout; see the Boom Beach Wiki’s Defensive Strategies for community guidance.

- Protect the objective: Make the HQ difficult to approach without engaging your defenses.
- Support important positions: Avoid leaving a key building isolated when another defense can help cover it.
- Account for rush routes: Place mines where they can threaten plausible approaches rather than scattering them without a plan.
- Use your actual unlocks: Adjust the design as your HQ level and available buildings change.
Include Gadgets in your placement decisions
Supercell introduced building-attached Gadgets in its March 17, 2026 update. Depending on the Gadget, its defensive effects can change damage, range, resistance to fire, freeze or shock, shields, regeneration, or what happens when a building is destroyed. Gadgets have quality levels and can be improved. Read about the system in the March Major Update announcement.
When deciding where to place a building, account for the Gadget attached to it: its effect may make that building’s position or the support it needs more important. There is no one Gadget setup or placement that can be assumed to suit every HQ level and layout.

At HQ29, plan for the Garrison and ration upkeep
The June 16, 2026 HQ29 update added a Garrison. Its troops patrol and move to intercept attackers they detect; losses are replenished while the Garrison remains standing, and destroying it stops that replenishment. Supercell describes the interception behavior in its Patrolling the beach announcement.
Garrisons and Bunkers each have their own ration storage. Assigned troops consume rations hourly, and stop operating if their storage runs empty. Treat the Garrison as part of your defensive plan, but account for both its position and its upkeep rather than assuming its troops will operate indefinitely.

Compare layouts by the problem they solve
Instead of searching for a layout labeled “perfect,” compare candidate designs using the same practical questions:
- Does it fit your HQ? Check that the design uses buildings and levels you have unlocked.
- Is the HQ covered? Consider whether an attacker approaching it must contend with supporting defenses.
- What attack does it answer? Assess likely approach routes and rush threats, including whether mines are positioned to matter.
- Do special mechanics change the position? Account for the attached Gadget, and at HQ29 for the Garrison’s interception role and ration supply.
No source-backed defense rate establishes a winning layout. Treat any suggested arrangement as a starting point to test against your own island’s needs, not a promise of a successful defense.

Save variants and revise them
At HQ13 and above, Boom Beach supports saving, editing and loading multiple base layouts, according to Supercell Support. Use that feature to keep variants suited to your unlocked defenses or different attack patterns. Compare how each arrangement covers the HQ and likely approaches, then revise as your buildings, Gadgets or defensive needs change.
