No. Borderlands 3 did not add a DLC Vault Hunter. The playable roster remains Amara, FL4K, Moze, and Zane. Its downloadable content expands those four characters with extra skill options, while also adding modes, missions, raid content, Vault Cards, and cosmetics.
The direct answer: there is no DLC Vault Hunter
No Borderlands 3 expansion or add-on introduced a fifth playable Vault Hunter. If you buy the game’s downloadable content, you still choose from the same four characters available in the base game: Amara, FL4K, Moze, or Zane.

This distinction matters because some DLC features can look like new-character content at first glance. Season Pass 2 adds a fourth skill tree for every Vault Hunter, and its cosmetic packs include redesigned character appearances. Those additions change how an existing character plays or looks; they do not create a separate character with a new class slot, level progression, action skill set, or character-selection entry.
Who are the Borderlands 3 Vault Hunters?
The base-game roster is the complete playable Vault Hunter roster for Borderlands 3:
#1 Best Overall
- YOUR VAULT HUNTER, YOUR PLAYSTYLE: Become one of four extraordinary Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, playstyles, deep skill trees, and tons of personalization options.
- LOCK, LOAD, AND LOOT: With bazillions of guns and gadgets, every fight is an opportunity to score new gear. Firearms with self-propelling bullet shields? Check. Guns that grow legs and chase down enemies while hurling verbal insults? Yeah, got that too.
- A MAYHEM-FUELED THRILL RIDE: Discover new worlds beyond Pandora, each featuring unique environments to explore and enemies to destroy. Tear through hostile deserts, battle your way across war-torn cityscapes, navigate deadly bayous, and more!
- QUICK & SEAMLESS CO-OP ACTION: Play with a friend in online co-op, regardless of your level or mission progress. Take down enemies and challenges as a team, but reap rewards that are yours alone—no one misses out on loot.
- Includes: Borderlands 3 base game, Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, Bounty of Blood, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, Designer's Cut, Director's Cut, and 30+ cosmetic items.
| Vault Hunter | What DLC changes | Does DLC make this a new character? |
|---|---|---|
| Amara | Receives additional build options through the fourth skill tree and can use new cosmetic appearances. | No |
| FL4K | Receives an additional skill tree and cosmetic options. | No |
| Moze | Receives an additional skill tree and cosmetic options. | No |
| Zane | Receives an additional skill tree and cosmetic options. | No |
The official Season Pass 2 listing names these four characters when describing its cosmetic packs. That wording reflects the underlying structure: the content is built around the existing roster rather than an additional Vault Hunter.
What Season Pass 2 actually adds
Season Pass 2 is the clearest source of the confusion because it contains substantial gameplay additions. Its two main add-ons are Designer’s Cut and Director’s Cut, accompanied by four Multiverse Final Form Cosmetic Packs. None of those components is a new playable character.
Designer’s Cut: a new mode and one more skill tree per character
Designer’s Cut adds Arms Race, a separate mode with its own gameplay format, and one additional skill tree for each of the four Vault Hunters. The skill-tree addition is the most important change for character builds. It gives Amara, FL4K, Moze, and Zane another way to allocate skill points and shape a play style, but it does not alter the roster.
A skill tree is an ability framework attached to a character you already selected. You do not start a new Vault Hunter to use it. Instead, you apply the extra tree to an existing Amara, FL4K, Moze, or Zane save when the relevant content is installed and available on your platform.
Arms Race: a mode, not a character
Arms Race is a mode included with Designer’s Cut. It expands what you can do in Borderlands 3 without adding another permanent character-selection option. Treat it as a gameplay activity layered onto the existing game, not as a fifth Vault Hunter campaign.
The mode can therefore be relevant even if your reason for buying DLC is build variety rather than story. It changes the activity you play; it does not change the number of characters you can create.

Director’s Cut: raid content, missions, extras, and Vault Cards
Director’s Cut adds a raid boss, new story missions, behind-the-scenes material, and three Vault Cards. These are separate forms of content with different purposes:
- Raid boss: an endgame encounter that provides another challenge for your existing characters.
- Story missions: additional narrative and objectives played with one of the four base-game Vault Hunters.
- Behind-the-scenes extras: supplementary material about the game’s development and production.
- Vault Cards: progression and reward tracks that add goals and unlockable items.
None of these categories supplies a new character model with an independent skill system. You continue using the same four Vault Hunters while accessing the added missions, encounters, and progression systems.
Final Form Cosmetic Packs: appearance changes only
Season Pass 2 includes four Multiverse Final Form Cosmetic Packs. Cosmetics can make a Vault Hunter look substantially different, which may lead to screenshots or store descriptions being mistaken for new playable characters. Their function is visual. A cosmetic pack does not add a new action-skill kit, skill trees, voice set, or separate character slot.
Why a fourth skill tree is not a fifth Vault Hunter
Borderlands 3 separates a character’s identity from the abilities available to that character. The four Vault Hunters remain the selectable heroes. Skill trees are modular systems that let each hero specialize in different ways.

That means a DLC skill tree can have a major effect on combat without being a new hero. It may change which abilities you prioritize, how you spend skill points, and which gear combinations make sense. The underlying character is still the one you picked at the beginning of the game.
A genuine DLC Vault Hunter would normally require a new entry on the character-selection screen, a distinct set of action skills, unique progression tied to that character, and separate character data. The Season Pass 2 descriptions identify an additional tree for every existing Vault Hunter instead. That is an expansion of four characters, not an addition to the roster.

Can you play as a new character in any Borderlands 3 DLC?
No. Installing an expansion does not unlock a fifth Vault Hunter. You can play the added missions and modes with Amara, FL4K, Moze, or Zane, and you can develop those characters with the additional skill trees where the DLC provides them.
If you were expecting a new class, the closest equivalent in Borderlands 3’s DLC is build expansion. The fourth skill tree gives each existing hero another direction, so a familiar character can perform differently from a launch-era build. That can make the DLC feel substantial for players who enjoy experimenting with abilities, but it should not be described as a new character.

Yes. The official Season Pass 2 listing states that the DLC requires Borderlands 3. A Season Pass 2 purchase is therefore an add-on license, not a standalone copy of the game and not a character pack that works independently.
Before buying, check the listing for your platform and region. Confirm that the edition you own is compatible with the add-on and that the purchase is being made for the same platform family. Store packaging, bundles, and availability can change, so the current platform listing is the appropriate place to verify those details.
What to check before purchase
- Confirm ownership of the base game. Season Pass 2 requires Borderlands 3.
- Match the platform. Use the store page for the platform on which you play.
- Read the included-content list. Look for Designer’s Cut, Director’s Cut, Vault Cards, the raid boss, missions, skill trees, and cosmetics.
- Set expectations about the roster. The listed content does not include a fifth playable Vault Hunter.
- Check the current regional edition. Bundles and entitlements can vary by storefront and region.
Common misconceptions about Borderlands 3 DLC characters
“The Final Form versions are new Vault Hunters.”
They are cosmetic versions of the existing heroes. The packs change appearance and do not add independent playable characters.
“A fourth skill tree means there are five classes.”
The number refers to skill trees per Vault Hunter, not to the number of Vault Hunters. Each of the four characters receives another tree; the roster remains four.

“A raid boss or new story arc comes with a new protagonist.”
The raid and missions are additional content for the existing game. You enter them using one of the four base-game characters.
“Vault Cards are character cards.”
Vault Cards are progression and reward systems included with Director’s Cut. They are not playable heroes or character slots.
“The term ‘DLC character’ includes any new model.”
In this context, a DLC character means a separately playable Vault Hunter. A cosmetic model can look new while remaining an appearance option for an existing character.

What happens to your existing saves?
The DLC’s character-focused addition is designed to extend existing Vault Hunters rather than replace them. Your Amara, FL4K, Moze, or Zane save remains the character you play. The extra skill-tree content gives that save another build path when the add-on is installed and recognized by the game.
Because the downloadable content is tied to the base game and platform entitlement, a missing skill tree or mission does not indicate that a secret character is being withheld. First verify that the correct add-on is installed on the same platform account as the base game.
If DLC content is missing after purchase
Use this checklist before assuming the purchase included a Vault Hunter:
Best Value
- A mayhem fueled thrill ride: Stop the fanatical calypso twins from uniting the bandit clans and claiming the galaxy's ultimate power; Only you, a thrill seeking vault hunter, have the arsenal and allies to take them down
- Your vault hunter, your playstyle: Become one of four extraordinary Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, playstyles, deep skill trees, and tons of personalization options; All vault hunters are capable of awesome mayhem alone, but together they are unstoppable
- Moze as the Gunner: When Moze needs backup she digistructs her mech Iron Bear for a sucker punch of additional firepower
- Amara as the Siren: A confident, capable brawler with the ability to summon ethereal fists, Amara uses her Siren powers to smash her enemies
- FL4K as the Beast Master: FL4K lives for the hunt; So do the loyal beasts that follow their master's every command their preferred prey; Unsuspecting bandits, those poor suckers
- Check the platform’s add-on or downloadable-content management screen and confirm that Designer’s Cut or Director’s Cut is installed.
- Restart the game after installation so the entitlement can be detected.
- Verify that you launched the matching edition and platform version of Borderlands 3.
- Check the in-game locations associated with the purchased mode, missions, skill trees, or Vault Cards rather than looking for a new character-selection entry.
- Review the store receipt and product description to confirm which add-on was purchased.
- If the add-on still does not appear, use the platform’s license-restoration or support process.
There should not be a new Vault Hunter on the character screen after these steps, because Borderlands 3’s DLC does not add one. The expected result is access to the specific modes, missions, skills, raid content, Vault Cards, or cosmetics listed for the purchased add-on.
Which DLC matters if you want more character variety?
If your priority is experimenting with the four existing heroes, Designer’s Cut is the relevant part of Season Pass 2 because it supplies the fourth skill tree for each Vault Hunter. It also includes Arms Race, so its value depends on whether you want both build expansion and that additional mode.
If you want new narrative and endgame activities rather than another build branch, Director’s Cut is the relevant component. Its raid boss, story missions, Vault Cards, and behind-the-scenes material broaden the game around the same four-character roster.
If you mainly want alternate looks, the Final Form Cosmetic Packs address appearance rather than gameplay. They should be evaluated as cosmetics, not as a route to unlocking a new hero.
Bottom line for shoppers and returning players
Borderlands 3 has no DLC Vault Hunters. The base roster of Amara, FL4K, Moze, and Zane is still the complete playable roster. Season Pass 2 makes those characters more flexible with a fourth skill tree each and adds Arms Race, a raid boss, story missions, Vault Cards, and cosmetics. Buy the add-on for those features only if they match what you want; it will not unlock a new character.
