There is no single best Borderlands 4 Vault Hunter for everyone. In HowToPlayHub’s tier list, updated September 14, 2026 and marked verified for Patch 1.10, Vex’s Incarnate and Dead Ringer, Rafa’s Peacebreaker Cannons, and C4SH’s Cleromancy rank highest. Those are individual skill-tree judgments—not an official ranking of entire characters. Choose by the play style and build you want, then use the tier list as one snapshot of performance.
Borderlands 4 skill-tree tier list
The placements below are HowToPlayHub’s assessment of individual trees, updated September 14, 2026. Its guide says it averages each tree’s potential; that does not mean every build within a tree performs equally, or that the same ranking applies to every player or activity. Plarium likewise cautions that tree rankings are not character rankings and that every Vault Hunter can be viable with a suitable build.

These tiers describe one outlet’s view of tree potential, not a guarantee of campaign comfort, endgame strength, team value, or gear independence. Gearbox has continued to adjust Vault Hunter skills and class mods: its April 2026 version 1.6 notes include changes for Vex, Rafa, and Harlowe, and Harlowe’s Zero-Point Action Skill was reworked in January. Treat any tier list as a dated balance snapshot, not a permanent verdict.
Which Vault Hunter should you pick first?
Start with the combat loop you want to repeat, rather than picking only by the letter next to a tree. The tiers above do not establish which character is easiest for a new player, most enjoyable, or best for a particular team. Consider how much you value survivability, crowd control and support, mobility, companions or summons, and whether you are happy to build around particular gear. Check the current in-game skill descriptions before committing skill points; this list does not establish every tree’s present mechanics or equipment needs.

- Want the highest-ranked options in this snapshot? Look first at the four S-tier trees, while remembering that their placement is HowToPlayHub’s editorial assessment.
- Have a preferred character? Compare that character’s trees, not just the character name. A lower-ranked tree may still suit your preferred approach better.
- Choosing for a first campaign? Prioritize a play loop you enjoy and can understand. A performance tier alone does not measure how forgiving a path feels while leveling.
- Choosing for a coordinated group? Assess the specific build’s control and support alongside damage and survivability; the tier table does not score team contribution separately.
Gearbox’s stated goal is to preserve build variety and meaningful Action Skill trade-offs. In its January 29, 2026 update notes, the development team said: “Long term, we want to ensure each Vault Hunter has plenty of build diversity, with each Action Skill having its own pros and cons.” That is a useful reason not to treat one ranking as a universal answer.

HowToPlayHub’s September guide lists four launch Vault Hunters—Amon, Harlowe, Rafa, and Vex—and two DLC additions, C4SH and Loveless. It reports that Update 1.10 raised the cap to level 70, giving characters 69 skill points. Those roster and cap details are guide-reported; the official materials cited here do not independently verify the September Update 1.10 cap or Loveless.

For C4SH, official Gearbox notes confirm that the character arrived with the paid Story Pack 1, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, and can be played across the entire game. The same March 2026 update raised the cap to level 60 for all players and added shared character progression. That March cap was later superseded by the September guide’s reported level 70 figure; it should not be mistaken for the current cap described by that guide. Do not assume every listed Vault Hunter is included with the base game.

How to use a tier list without overreading it
- Check its date and patch. The placements here are from September 14, 2026 and are marked verified for Patch 1.10. Later balance changes can make them stale.
- Separate a tree ranking from a character ranking. A Vault Hunter can have both higher- and lower-ranked trees in the same list.
- Match the ranking to your goal. Tree potential is not the same as ease of leveling, personal enjoyment, team utility, or low gear dependence.
- Recheck after updates. Gearbox’s January and April 2026 balance notes show that Action Skills, skills, and class mods can change.
