What is the Crit Knife in Borderlands 4?
The Crit Knife is a Jakobs gear item whose critical-chance effect became the subject of a balance change. Gearbox’s October 23, 2025 update notes list the adjustment as: “Reduced critical chance on Jakobs crit knife to 30%.” The accompanying developer note reads, “It had to happen, you knew it was going to happen!” (Gearbox’s October 23, 2025 update notes.)
That note establishes what Gearbox changed in that update. It does not establish the exact wording or value on the item card in October 2026, or whether a later update changed the effect again.
Did the Crit Knife get nerfed?
Yes. Gearbox’s October 23, 2025 notes officially document reducing the Jakobs Crit Knife’s critical chance to 30%. Gearbox described its wider balance aim as providing “the greatest number of viable builds.” The patch note does not, by itself, confirm the item’s current live behavior.

What reports said about the earlier effect
In an October 31, 2025 retrospective, GameSpot reported that the Penetrator augment had previously raised critical-hit chance to 100% for five seconds. The story said the October 23 change made it a flat 30% for five seconds, which could reduce a character’s chance if the rest of the build already raised it. These are details reported at that time, not verified current item stats. (GameSpot’s October 31, 2025 report.)
What about the reported stacking interaction?
The same GameSpot report described a stacking interaction observed shortly after the nerf, reportedly allowing the effect to reach as high as 90% over a five-second window after repeated throws. That was a dated report about a volatile interaction, not an official statement that it remains possible. Don’t treat it as current build advice without newer confirmation.

How do critical hits work?
In a critical-hit guide updated June 21, 2026, Mobalytics author Ratore explains that hitting an enemy weak spot results in a critical hit. The guide describes the critical modifier as equivalent to +100% added on-hit damage, and says chance-triggered critical hits receive that modifier and can benefit from critical-damage boosts following fixes it attributes to Gearbox. In practical terms, the guide distinguishes aiming at weak spots from effects that grant a chance to score critical hits. A chance effect can complement a build, but the payoff depends on the applicable critical modifier and critical-damage bonuses. The guide’s explanation should not be read as confirmation that a particular Crit Knife interaction or stacking method still works.

- Check the date. Advice describing 100% chance for five seconds predates or concerns the October 23, 2025 change as reported by GameSpot.
- Separate patch facts from reports. Gearbox documented the reduction to 30%; GameSpot reported the earlier effect and a subsequent stacking interaction.
