First find where the picture becomes blurry: compare the encoder preview and a local recording with playback on another device or network. Then fix the cause rather than simply raising resolution or bitrate.
Find where the picture first becomes blurry
Check the encoder preview, a local recording if you have one, and the stream as viewers receive it. Ask more than one viewer, ideally on different connections, whether they see the same problem. YouTube says a problem reported by one viewer is probably on that viewer’s device or internet connection; reports from many viewers on different connections can point to the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend checking CPU load and the quality of the video sources routed into the encoder.
- Preview and recording look clean, but one viewer sees blur: check that viewer’s playback quality, device, browser and connection.
- Preview and recording are blurry: inspect the camera or other source, source resolution and encoder/rendering path.
- Preview looks clean, but multiple remote viewers see degradation: check upload stability, dropped frames, configured bitrate and the platform’s stream-health messages.
Check YouTube playback quality on the viewer’s device
YouTube adjusts playback quality based on factors including connection speed, player size, the original video quality and browser support. Viewers can also choose a quality manually. Ask an affected viewer to open the player’s Settings → Quality and select a higher available resolution, then compare playback on another device or network. Higher playback quality uses more data and can take longer to start or buffer more. A player setting cannot make a stream sharper than the video that was sent. YouTube explains how to change video quality.
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate and codec
More bitrate can preserve detail only when the source, encoder and connection can deliver it reliably. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate as a set, and use figures for the codec and platform you actually stream with. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists the following ingestion recommendations and minimums for H.264 and AV1/H.265. The page does not state a publication year; these are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees or universal settings for other services.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended | H.264 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These numbers describe YouTube’s recommended and minimum live-ingestion bitrates for the listed combinations. If your upload cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate until it can. Do not treat the minimum as a guarantee of sharp output, especially for fast-moving games, or assume that a high bitrate will fix a low-quality source.
Measure stable upload capacity and dropped frames
Test upload speed, not just download speed, and account for other people and devices sharing the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused; for a primary and backup encoder, budget for both streams plus that headroom. A speed test is only a snapshot, so check stream health during a private or unlisted rehearsal using movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube’s guidance puts the constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests lowering bitrate to match stable upload speed and recommends testing a wired connection when streaming over Wi-Fi. Ethernet can help isolate Wi-Fi instability; it will not correct a blurry camera source, unsuitable encoder settings or a viewer-side playback limit. If you are investigating Wi-Fi or a possibly faulty network cable, a wired test and a known-good cable are reasonable diagnostics, not a general picture-quality cure.
Check the source, encoder and computer load
If the OBS preview or local recording is already degraded, changing YouTube playback quality is unlikely to help. Check whether the camera, game capture or other input is itself blurry, and confirm the source is configured at the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Look for encoder errors and heavy system load.

OBS composites and renders scenes using GPU resources. Its encoding performance guide, dated June 12, 2021, notes that GPU overload or complex scenes can cause choppy or laggy output. Try freeing GPU capacity, limiting a game’s frame rate, reducing output settings or simplifying the scene. These changes target rendering workload; they do not repair a poor source image or an unstable upload connection.
Use the right YouTube encoder settings and rehearse
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not over four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and streaming workflow; platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, connection and hardware all affect what is appropriate. Test before a public broadcast with similar movement and audio, then review stream health and dashboard messages rather than guessing from the viewer’s symptom alone. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations before changing settings, since the page’s publication year is not stated.
