Borderlands 4 is already out: 2K and Gearbox announced the next mainline looter-shooter on August 20, 2024, initially targeting 2025. Its confirmed release date was September 12, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; the Nintendo Switch 2 version followed on October 3, 2025.
When did Borderlands 4 come out?
The release date changed after the initial reveal. On February 12, 2025, 2K announced September 23, 2025; Gearbox later moved the date forward. The confirmed worldwide launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store was September 12, 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 version launched separately on October 3, 2025. 2K’s original 2024 announcement, February date announcement, Gearbox’s April 2025 gameplay deep dive, and 2K’s launch announcement establish the revised timeline.
What did Gearbox reveal about the game?
Borderlands 4 is the next main entry in the franchise’s looter-shooter series. It takes place on Kairos, a new planet ruled by the Timekeeper, and introduces four new Vault Hunters. Gearbox’s gameplay overview highlighted expanded movement options, while the official game page describes solo and cooperative play. In co-op, dynamic level scaling and instanced loot are designed to let party members play together while progressing individually. See the official Borderlands 4 page and gameplay deep dive.
At the 2024 reveal, Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford said the team had “massive ambitions” for the game and wanted to improve what players love about Borderlands while taking it in new directions. That was Gearbox’s promotional description of its goals, not an independent assessment of the finished game. The publisher also said in February 2025 that the Borderlands franchise had sold more than 87 million copies; that figure refers to the franchise, not Borderlands 4. 2K’s announcement.

What do the editions include?
At launch, 2K listed Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions. The table gives the listed US launch prices for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; these are historical prices, not a statement of current or regional pricing. Check the platform store for today’s price and availability.

The official support FAQ, updated June 30, 2026, also describes a separate ECHO-4 physical bundle with a statue, necklace, map and art prints; the bundle does not include the game. The base campaign is included in Standard, so the higher editions are not required to play it. The FAQ describes four Bounty Packs in the bundle and two Story Packs in the Vault Hunter Pack; consult current official listings for the latest content and availability.
Can you play Borderlands 4 online or cross-play?
Online play requires an internet connection. Cross-play requires a SHiFT account and is supported across console types and PC. On consoles, online play also requires the platform’s separate paid online subscription. Requirements are listed in 2K’s launch announcement and the support FAQ.

What post-launch and endgame content was announced?
In its August 2025 roadmap, 2K described weekly challenge missions, unlockable Specializations and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, which has five unlockable difficulty levels. The roadmap said players progress through ranks by completing mission challenges rather than replaying the campaign for each rank. It also outlined paid Bounty Packs and Story Packs, but their timing was subject to change. For current release dates and content, use the official post-launch roadmap alongside the support FAQ; the original roadmap is not a current schedule.
