Borderlands 4 earns much of its return-to-form reputation through the parts that matter most to fans of the series: fast loot-driven combat, deeper build experimentation, and movement that makes its new open world enjoyable to explore. The writing also drew praise from reviewers. The main reservation is PC performance: two 2025 reviews reported problems, and PC Gamer also found the inventory interface frustrating. For players who prioritize combat and builds, it is a strong recommendation; PC buyers should weigh those caveats.
What Borderlands 4 changes—and what it keeps
Borderlands 4 moves the series to Kairos, a seamless planet, and introduces four new Vault Hunters. Its core remains loot-focused combat, now paired with new traversal options and skill-tree builds. It supports solo play and co-op for up to four players, according to 2K’s official game page.
The shift to a connected open world works best when it serves that familiar loop: exploring, finding fights, and trying new gear and skills. TechRadar praised the world structure, movement, Vault Hunter skills, soundtrack, and loot chase. That combination—not simply a larger map—is the clearest reason the game feels like a course correction.
Is Borderlands 4 worth playing?
If you come to Borderlands for combat, loot, and experimenting with character builds, the answer is yes. Both TechRadar and PC Gamer found the core loop absorbing, and TechRadar also praised the writing. The game’s strengths are closely tied to its moment-to-moment play rather than to a reinvention of the series’ premise.

- Pre-order Borderlands 4 and receive the Gilded Glory Pack featuring a Vault Hunter Skin, a Weapon Skin, and an ECHO-4 Drone Skin!*
- BE A BADASS: Become an unstoppable force of battle, blasting through enemies with an all-new arsenal of outrageous weaponry. Move across the Borderlands like never before—double jumping, gliding, dodging, grappling, and more—dealing death from every direction. Explode each encounter with devastating Action Skills that unleash your Vault Hunter's unique abilities. Craft your perfect build with branching skill trees and a deep, rewarding loot chase full of wild weapons and powerful gear.
- FIGHT SOLO OR CO-OP: Wreaking havoc across Kairos is awesome alone and even better with friends in 2-player splitscreen or up to 4-player online co-op.** Borderlands 4 is designed for co-op from the ground up; whether you're hunting for loot, tackling missions, or wandering freely, level scaling and individual difficulty keeps the party together and having fun.
- LESS BORDERS, MORE LANDS: Freely explore a vast and dangerous world rife with warring factions. Hop on your hover bike and ride through lush fields, towering peaks, and deadly deserts full of fearsome enemies, dynamic events, and engaging quests with unforgettable characters. Unite the people of Kairos and ignite a revolution, tackling this adventure however you see fit in a seamless Borderlands experience.
That recommendation is less straightforward if you expect every side activity to pay off equally or want a friction-free PC experience. TechRadar found side-objective rewards uneven. PC Gamer reported that the inventory interface got in the way of managing loot, alongside performance problems and bugs.
How does it compare with earlier Borderlands?
The reviews support calling Borderlands 4 a return to form in gameplay, but not an unqualified triumph across every part of the experience. Its loot-and-build focus remains central, while traversal and a seamless world give exploration a stronger role. The writing also received praise, though the available reviews do not establish that every player will prefer its humor or story to earlier entries.

PC Gamer reviewer Morgan Park called it “the best game in the whole 16-year-old series” while describing it as “trapped in a prison of terrible choices-choices” that did not stop him from spending 47 hours in a loot-driven blur. That is one reviewer’s subjective verdict, not a consensus score. TechRadar reviewer Rhys Wood reported a 40-hour first playthrough; neither figure should be treated as a general completion-time estimate.
How does Borderlands 4 run on PC?
Approach PC performance with caution. TechRadar said performance needed work, while PC Gamer reported stuttering, slowdowns, bugs, and inventory-interface friction. PC Gamer’s review system was an RTX 3060, Ryzen 7 5800, 16GB of RAM, and an SSD; those observations describe one reviewer’s setup and are not a universal benchmark.
