Sometimes both. Fantasy has no universal rule that forces dwarves to use bows or crossbows. The answer belongs to a specific setting, game, edition, author, or character build. In Dwarf Fortress, crossbows are dwarves’ native ranged weapon, while bows can enter a fortress through trading or looting. In Dungeons & Dragons, bows and crossbows are equipment options, and proficiency belongs to the individual character rather than to a blanket dwarf rule.
There is no single fantasy answer
“Dwarves” are not one canon population shared by every fantasy world. A weapon that is standard in one game may be unusual, unavailable, or governed by entirely different rules in another. Before deciding whether a dwarf uses a bow or crossbow, identify the setting and the ruleset.

That distinction matters because fictional weapon use can describe several different things:
- Native equipment: the weapon a game gives dwarves as their standard or built-in ranged option.
- Availability: a weapon that a dwarf can obtain through trade, loot, crafting, or character creation.
- Proficiency: whether the rules let a particular character use the weapon effectively, often by adding a bonus to attack rolls.
- Tactical role: range, ammunition, loading or reload time, and how the weapon fits the game’s combat system.
- Cultural depiction: an author’s or setting’s artistic choice, which may not be a mechanical rule.
The evidence for the two major game examples below demonstrates why a broad “dwarves always use crossbows” or “dwarves cannot use bows” answer is misleading.

Dwarf Fortress: crossbows are the native ranged weapon
What the game treats as native
The current-version Dwarf Fortress Wiki describes crossbows as the only native ranged weapon available to dwarves. In practical terms, crossbows are the ranged weapon that belongs to the game’s standard dwarven equipment model. If you are asking what a newly established fortress is expected to use for dwarf marksdwarves, the answer is crossbows.
“Native” does not mean “the only ranged weapon a dwarf can ever hold.” It identifies the weapon supplied by the game’s ordinary dwarf-specific rules. A fortress that follows the normal equipment path therefore starts from crossbows rather than bows.
How bows can still appear
The same game description says that bows and blowguns can be acquired through trading or looting. A bow in a fortress is therefore possible, but its presence reflects acquisition rather than the native dwarf weapon rule. A player who finds or trades for bows should not treat that discovery as evidence that the game has switched dwarves to a bow tradition.
This native-versus-possible distinction is useful when reading equipment screens or planning a fortress. “Can use” and “is supplied by default” are different questions. Crossbows answer the second question; bows can answer the first when the fortress obtains them through the routes the game allows.

Reloading and ammunition are part of the answer
Dwarf Fortress also treats crossbows as a mechanical system rather than merely a visual choice. Crossbow bolts are their ammunition, and the game description notes that crossbows take the longest to reload. That reload characteristic affects how a marksdwarf performs in combat and should be considered alongside the weapon’s native status.
Consequently, a Dwarf Fortress answer can be precise: dwarves’ native ranged weapon is the crossbow; bows and blowguns may enter through trade or loot; and crossbow users operate with bolt ammunition and a notably long reload cycle. None of those statements should be exported as a rule for every fantasy setting.
Dungeons & Dragons: weapon choice and proficiency are separate
What the 2024 rules establish
The 2024 Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules list bows and crossbows as equipment options. The equipment rules define concepts such as ammunition, range, and loading, and provide separate entries for the weapons. They do not make a general claim that dwarves as a species prefer bows over crossbows, or crossbows over bows.

“Anyone can wield a weapon, but you must have proficiency with it to add your Proficiency Bonus to an attack roll you make with it.”
This sentence separates physical use from trained effectiveness. A dwarf can be able to wield a bow or crossbow, but whether the character adds a Proficiency Bonus depends on that character’s proficiencies and features. The equipment list alone cannot establish a species-wide cultural preference.
What the 2015 Basic Rules say about dwarves
The 2015 D&D Basic Rules list dwarf-specific combat proficiency with the battleaxe, handaxe, light hammer, and warhammer. Bows and crossbows are not included in that dwarf-specific list. That is a statement about the traits listed in that rules version, not a prohibition on ranged weapons.
Recommended Free Tools
A dwarf in those rules can still use a bow or crossbow if another part of the character’s build, class, background, feat, or multiclass provides the relevant proficiency. If no proficiency applies, the character may still wield the weapon, but does not add the Proficiency Bonus to the attack roll under the quoted rule.

Why edition matters
D&D traits and equipment rules differ by edition. A claim about a 2015 dwarf entry should not be presented as a claim about the 2024 rules, and neither should be treated as a universal statement about fantasy dwarves. When a player asks whether a dwarf “uses” a bow or crossbow, check the edition, then check the character sheet and the weapon’s properties.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Dwarf Fortress | Dungeons & Dragons |
|---|---|---|
| Native or default dwarf ranged weapon | Crossbows are described as the only native ranged weapon. | No general dwarf-specific bow or crossbow preference is stated in the cited equipment rules. |
| Can a dwarf obtain a bow? | Yes, through trading or looting. | Yes, as an equipment option, subject to the character’s rules and proficiencies. |
| Can a dwarf use a crossbow? | Yes; it is the native ranged weapon. | Yes, if the character’s equipment and proficiency rules permit effective use. |
| How proficiency works | The game’s equipment and military systems determine use; the cited description does not present a D&D-style proficiency bonus. | Proficiency determines whether the character adds the Proficiency Bonus to an attack roll. |
| Ammunition and timing | Crossbows use bolts and take the longest to reload, according to the current-version description. | The rules define ammunition, range, and loading properties for weapon entries; exact effects depend on the edition and character rules. |
| Evidence of a universal fantasy convention | None; this is a game-specific mechanic. | None; the rules provide options rather than a species-wide preference. |
How to answer the question for any setting
When the title or discussion does not name a world, use this sequence instead of guessing.
- Name the setting. Ask whether the question concerns Dwarf Fortress, a particular D&D edition, a novel, a tabletop campaign, or another game. “Dwarf” is not enough information to identify the rule.
- Separate native from possible. Look for wording such as “starting equipment,” “racial weapon,” “native weapon,” or “available through trade.” A weapon can be obtainable without being the standard choice.
- Check the character rule. In a rules-heavy game, inspect proficiency, class features, feats, skill requirements, and weapon properties. Do not infer a restriction from a weapon list alone.
- Check the combat model. Range, ammunition, loading, reload time, action cost, and accuracy may matter more than the weapon’s cultural image. Two settings can use the same word, “crossbow,” for very different tactical systems.
- State the edition or version. Include the rules date or game version when traits have changed. A 2015 D&D dwarf entry and a 2024 equipment page should not be blended into one timeless rule.
- Keep lore and mechanics separate. If an author depicts dwarves with bows, that is a canon or aesthetic claim for that work. If a game supplies crossbows by default, that is a mechanic. Neither automatically governs another setting.
Common mistakes to avoid
“Dwarves always use crossbows”
This conclusion usually comes from applying the Dwarf Fortress rule outside its own game. It is accurate only when the subject is that game’s current mechanics. Other settings may give dwarves bows, crossbows, both, or no fixed ranged tradition.
“Dwarves cannot use bows”
A native-weapon rule is not the same as a ban. In Dwarf Fortress, bows can be acquired through trading or looting. In D&D, the absence of bows and crossbows from the 2015 dwarf-specific proficiency list does not prevent a character from wielding them under another applicable rule.

“The equipment list proves a racial preference”
Listing a bow and a crossbow tells you that the game recognizes those weapons. It does not tell you that every dwarf prefers one. In 2024 D&D, proficiency is attached to the character’s capabilities, so the character sheet matters.
“Popular imagery is a rule”
Artwork, miniatures, and familiar fantasy scenes can make one answer feel obvious. They are not a substitute for the named setting’s primary rules or text. If the setting is unspecified, the most accurate answer is conditional rather than absolute.
What to say when the setting is unspecified
A concise, accurate response is: “Both are possible, but it depends on the setting. Dwarf Fortress makes crossbows the native dwarf ranged weapon, while bows can be obtained through trade or looting. Dungeons & Dragons offers bows and crossbows as equipment, with effective use determined by the character’s proficiencies and edition.”

The available evidence here does not establish a Tolkien-specific answer, so the responsible next step is to identify the exact text or adaptation being discussed.
Bottom line
Dwarves can use bows or crossbows, but there is no cross-fantasy rule choosing one. In Dwarf Fortress, choose crossbows when you mean the native ranged weapon; regard bows as items that can arrive through trade or loot. In D&D, examine the edition and the individual character’s proficiency rather than assuming a dwarf-wide restriction. Always name the setting before turning a familiar fantasy image into a factual answer.
