Brain Workshop: How to Play Dual N-Back and What It Can (and Can’t) Do

Brain Workshop pairs a grid position with a spoken letter in a dual n-back exercise. Here’s how to play—and why getting better at the game is not proof of higher IQ.

Brain Workshop is a free, open-source game built around dual n-back: you track a visual position and a spoken letter, then respond when either one matches the cue from a set number of trials earlier. You can improve at the exercise through practice, but that does not establish that the game reliably raises general intelligence or improves everyday cognitive ability.

What Brain Workshop is

Brain Workshop implements the dual n-back exercise, pairing two streams of information: a square appearing in a grid and a spoken letter. “Dual” refers to those two streams. “N-back” means comparing the current cue with the cue presented N trials earlier. The project names Paul Hoskinson as creator and Paul Hoskinson and Jonathan Toomim as maintainers. It also offers modes such as Triple N-Back and Arithmetic N-Back, along with score tracking, graphs, and configuration options. Brain Workshop’s project page

How to play dual n-back

The project tutorial suggests beginning with Dual 1-Back in manual mode. At 1-back, compare each cue with the immediately previous trial; at 2-back, compare it with the cue two trials earlier. Respond to a position match and a letter match separately.

  1. Choose Dual 1-Back in manual mode.
  2. Watch the grid for the blue square and listen for the spoken letter. The tutorial describes a beginner trial with a square every three seconds.
  3. Press A when the position matches the relevant earlier position, and press L when the letter matches the relevant earlier letter.
  4. When you are ready, try a higher n-back level or the program’s adaptive mode, which the tutorial says adjusts the level as performance changes.

If you cannot hear the letters, check that your speakers are not muted. Headphones are optional; they may help with private or clearer listening, but are not required by the tutorial. These are the project’s instructions, not a clinically validated training prescription. Brain Workshop tutorial

Does Brain Workshop improve IQ?

The evidence distinguishes learning the game from “far transfer”—improvement in broader abilities that were not directly trained. Reviews have reached different conclusions, in part because they examined different collections of studies and control conditions.

Review Scope Finding
Au et al. (2014) 20 qualifying n-back studies in healthy adults ages 18–50 Found a small, statistically significant positive effect on fluid intelligence. The authors also noted that evidence for transfer from working memory to broader cognitive domains had been more equivocal. Abstract
Melby-Lervåg, Redick, and Hulme (2016) 87 publications and 145 experimental comparisons of working-memory training programs, including n-back Found reliable immediate gains on intermediate verbal and visuospatial working-memory measures, but no convincing evidence of reliable far-transfer gains over treated controls in nonverbal ability, verbal ability, reading, or arithmetic. Abstract
Soveri et al. (2017) 203 effect sizes from 33 randomized controlled trials focused on n-back training Reported a medium transfer effect to untrained n-back tasks. Effects for other working-memory tasks, fluid intelligence, and cognitive control were similar in size and very small. Their moderator analyses found no effect of single versus dual n-back training or dose. Abstract

These findings support a measured conclusion: practice can improve performance on the trained task, and transfer to similar n-back tasks has evidence behind it. The broader claim that Brain Workshop reliably increases general intelligence or everyday cognitive ability is not established by these reviews. They examine training programs and study outcomes, not Brain Workshop as a unique product.

What schedule should you use?

Brain Workshop’s homepage and tutorial propose a training schedule, but that is the project’s recommendation—not a clinical guideline or proof that a particular frequency and duration produces broad cognitive benefits. Treat the exercise as an optional game, choose a manageable routine, and judge progress by the task’s own performance measures rather than assuming that a higher score means your IQ or daily functioning has changed. Brain Workshop homepage

The homepage also describes ADHD/ADD benefits as anecdotal. Brain Workshop should not be treated as an ADHD treatment or a substitute for professional care.

Downloads, versions, and the separate fork

The project download page lists version 4.8.4 for Windows, Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, and a Linux source distribution. SourceForge labels 4.8.4 the latest version and dates version 4.8 to 2015-07-10. These are historical listings; they do not establish that the original binaries work on current operating systems. Check the project’s own download information before choosing a build. Official download page · SourceForge project files

A GitHub repository describes itself as a fork, separate from the original project. Its README says the original had gone three years without a release at the time of writing, describes version 5 as technically beta, and discusses Python 2 and 3 compatibility. Those statements concern the fork and do not demonstrate the current compatibility of the original Brain Workshop release. Fork repository

Is Brain Workshop worth trying?

If you want a free, structured memory-and-attention challenge, Brain Workshop offers a straightforward way to try dual n-back and track performance. It is most defensible to regard it as practice at a demanding game, not as a proven route to higher IQ, treatment for ADHD, or guaranteed gains in everyday cognition. Start at 1-back, learn the two response streams, and raise the difficulty only if you want a harder task.
