Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platform fighter with local and online play, cross-play across major platforms, and matches that the official site says can include up to eight players. Those features make it easy to try with friends, but they do not settle how balanced, responsive, or fair the game feels in practice. The available evidence supports a verdict on access and scope—not a firsthand judgment of match quality.
What is Brawlhalla?
Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platform fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games. Ubisoft’s studio profile says it acquired Blue Mammoth in 2018. Ubisoft’s profile establishes that studio relationship, but it does not provide a current player count.
The official Brawlhalla website describes the game as supporting local and online play, full cross-play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, and matches with up to eight players. It also displays “50+ Playable Legends”; that is the site’s current displayed claim, not an independently audited roster count. The eight-player figure is a maximum feature claim, not confirmation that every mode supports that many people.
Is Brawlhalla worth trying?
For someone looking for a no-cost way to try a platform fighter or play locally and online with friends across supported platforms, its advertised access and multiplayer breadth make it an easy game to consider. Steam’s listing marks it free to play. That answers the cost-of-entry question, but not whether its optional purchases feel fair or whether the gameplay stays engaging over time.
#1 Best Overall
Steam’s English-language listing showed a “Mostly Positive” rating when retrieved on October 8, 2026: 77% positive from 178,575 user reviews. That is a volatile Steam user-review snapshot, not a critic consensus or a rating across all platforms. Check the live listing for the current aggregate.
Playing with friends and choosing an input
Cross-play is the practical standout for groups using different supported platforms: the official site says the game offers full cross-play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, and Android. It also advertises both local and online play. The site’s “up to eight players” claim should not be read as a promise about the capacity of every individual mode.
A gamepad is an optional input choice, not a verified requirement or a guarantee of competitive advantage. Brawlhalla’s support page includes gamepad troubleshooting, and Steam’s listing includes controller-related categories; neither provides a comprehensive compatibility list or recommends a best controller. Check support information for your platform and device before buying hardware specifically for the game.

Platform availability, cross-play, local and online play, and the official roster and player-capacity claims describe the product’s stated scope. They do not establish how readable combat feels, how quickly newcomers learn its movement and attacks, whether matches remain varied, or how well online play performs in a particular region and connection setup.
Likewise, the Steam rating reflects its own English-language review population, not current matchmaking quality, game balance, technical performance, or the experience on console and mobile. Those are the questions a player should judge directly; the evidence here does not support presenting a firsthand verdict on them.
