brci06a.dll is an older Brother Color Inkjet Printer Driver component, not a normal Windows system DLL. The safest fix is to identify the Brother printer model and reinstall its official driver package instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
A Windows application or printer utility requests brci06a.dll when it starts. Windows then searches for that file and loads it together with any dependencies required by the Brother driver.
Public file metadata describes brci06a.dll as a 32-bit driver DLL associated with Brother Industries, Ltd. Historical listings commonly identify it as part of the Brother Color Inkjet Printer Driver. The reported version, size, hashes, language fields, and installation path vary between databases, so they should not be treated as a universal specification for every Brother printer.
This is not a standard Windows component, Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX file, or .NET file. It also does not belong to every Brother printer. The exact model and driver package that installed it may be an older package no longer offered for current Windows versions.

A message naming this DLL does not always prove that the file itself is missing. Windows may report “The specified module could not be found” when brci06a.dll exists but one of its dependent files is absent or incompatible.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Brother printer package
This is the most likely repair because brci06a.dll belongs to a Brother driver package rather than Windows itself.
Identify the printer model
- Check the label on the printer.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Click the Brother printer and note its complete model number.
- If the printer is not listed, check its physical label, purchase documentation, or the old computer where it was installed.
Do not choose a similar-looking model. Brother packages are model-specific, and substituting another model’s files can leave the driver chain incomplete.
Remove the broken printer installation
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
For a deeper cleanup:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Brother driver if it is clearly associated with the affected model.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
Do not manually delete files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Driver Store. Those folders can contain components shared by other printer installations.
Install the replacement package
- Open the official Brother Support Downloads page.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the Windows version and the available system architecture.
- Download Full Driver & Software Package, or the applicable printer-driver package.
- Extract the downloaded file.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run
start.exe. - Follow the installation wizard.
- Reconnect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
Try opening the Brother utility or printing a test page. If the error no longer appears and the printer responds, the driver chain has been restored.
A 32-bit component can be required by a 32-bit Brother utility even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not assume that a 64-bit operating system makes every installed printer component 64-bit.
Manually hunting through old driver versions and checking which of many device drivers is stale can take longer than the repair itself. - Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries related to
brci06a.dll, Brother software, or the printer installer. - Expand an entry and inspect its file path, detection name, and action.
Only consider restoring or allowing the file when all of these are true:
- It came from the official Brother installer.
- The path belongs to the Brother installation.
- The installer was downloaded from Brother.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are consistent with Brother.
- The detection appears to be a false positive.
Microsoft explains Protection History and the risks of restoring quarantined files in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
If the file came from an unknown source, do not restore it. Remove the old installation and reinstall the Brother package instead. Protection History is retained for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
Fix 3: Verify the file, architecture, and signature
If brci06a.dll still exists, verify what Windows is loading before replacing anything.
Check the location
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for
brci06a.dll. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
A location inside a Brother program folder or a printer-driver directory is more plausible than an arbitrary download folder. A path in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves caution.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit components. The names are confusing, and neither folder is automatically the correct destination for this Brother DLL.
Check the signature
On the Digital Signatures tab:
- Select the signature.
- Click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Review the signer and certificate information.
A missing signature does not by itself prove malware, especially for an old driver, but it is a reason to reinstall from the official package rather than copy the file manually.

Historical metadata commonly reports this DLL as 32-bit. That does not establish that every package using the same filename has identical contents. Do not replace it with a file from another Brother model or architecture.
Fix 4: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They generally do not restore a third-party Brother DLL, so use them when Windows has other symptoms or when the Brother installer itself fails.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Brother installer again.
Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.
If DISM or SFC reports repairs, test the Brother utility again. If both commands report no problems, return to the Brother package, model compatibility, and antivirus checks rather than repeatedly running the same commands.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed can waste time. It is not required, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct Brother driver.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a default repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing files.
There is no reliable evidence that brci06a.dll is an ActiveX or COM server requiring manual registration. Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 brci06a.dll
It may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. On a 64-bit system, using the wrong version of regsvr32 can also create architecture confusion. Microsoft describes the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
Afterward, reinstall the correct Brother package if the printer driver was rolled back or removed.
If the error appears only in an old Brother utility
If Windows can print normally but one scanner, maintenance, status, or configuration utility reports brci06a.dll, the failing program may be obsolete.
Try this order:
- Uninstall the Brother utility from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest utility available for the exact model.
- If no compatible version exists, use Windows’ printer settings or the printer’s built-in controls.
Do not install a loose DLL simply to keep an unsupported utility running. If the model is no longer supported on the current Windows release, practical alternatives may include a newer Brother package, Windows’ built-in printer class driver, another compatible computer, or replacing the printer.

That can be normal. A newer package may no longer use brci06a.dll, or the installed package may use a different architecture and component layout.
Check the following:
- The printer model was entered correctly.
- The package matches Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The installer completed without an error.
- Windows Security did not quarantine a component.
- The failing application is part of the same Brother package.
- The error names another missing dependency.
If printing works but an old utility still requests the DLL, remove or replace that utility rather than copying the file into a Windows folder. If every repair fails, inspect Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and any Brother installer log, then contact Brother with the model, Windows build, installer name, and exact error text.

Is brci06a.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the Brother Color Inkjet Printer Driver and should not be treated as a file that every Windows installation needs.

Not normally. Visual C++ repair is relevant when the error names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. It does not restore brci06a.dll.
Will SFC restore this DLL?
Usually not. SFC targets protected Windows files, while brci06a.dll is a third-party Brother driver component.
Does the file need to be registered?
There is no established reason to register it manually. Do not use regsvr32 unless specific Brother documentation for your model instructs you to do so.
