ext-ms-win-setupapi-logging-l1-1-0.dll is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract used for SetupAPI logging, not a normal application DLL. If an application or game reports that ext-ms-win-setupapi-logging-l1-1-0.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement file.
The name is associated with Setupapi.dll, which provides Windows setup and device-driver installation functions. Microsoft introduced this API set in Windows 8 and documents it for functions including SetupOpenLog, SetupWriteTextLog, and SetupLogError.
An API-set name ending in .dll can be a virtual loader alias rather than a standalone file that should be copied into a folder. The Windows loader maps that contract to the appropriate system host. That is why a missing-file dialog does not prove that a separate physical DLL is absent.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Pending updates can leave Windows components, servicing files, or driver-installation support in an incomplete state.

Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, click Check for updates. On Windows 10, click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered, including optional driver updates only if they relate to the affected hardware.
- Restart when prompted.
- Launch the program again.
If the error appeared after an interrupted update, restart even if Windows reports that no updates are available. If several applications, Windows Update, or driver installers show related errors, continue with the repair commands below.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the primary fix when Windows components are damaged or missing. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- When both commands finish, restart Windows.
- Try the affected application, game, or installer again.
A successful DISM run normally ends with a message indicating that the restore operation completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.
If SFC repaired files, restart and test again. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, DISM can use a matching Windows installation source:

Replace the example path with a valid repair source matching your Windows edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary folder.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine a Windows component or a file used by the program that triggered the message.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Click Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving Windows components, the affected application, or its installer.
- Open an entry to see its path and detection details.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name resembles the error. Restore it only if the file is confirmed genuine and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If the program was installed recently, download its installer again only from the publisher’s official source. For this API-set error, Windows repair is safer than trying to replace the named file separately.
4. Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one program or game fails while Windows, other applications, and driver installers work normally, the application’s installation or one of its dependencies may be damaged.
First identify the executable named in the error dialog. The wording may say that the program cannot start, but the executable name is more useful than the API-set filename alone.

For a Microsoft Store app:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and choose Reset, if available.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Select the application’s menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator for the first test.
Do not automatically reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this filename. Microsoft’s API-set documentation does not identify this contract as belonging to those packages. Install a runtime only when the application’s own installer or documentation specifically identifies it as a required dependency.

5. Reinstall the affected driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SetupAPI is central to Windows device and driver installation, so a driver installation failure can expose this error even when the driver itself is the visible problem.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the device, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and check the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Obtain the replacement driver from the computer manufacturer or hardware manufacturer.
- Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the device or application.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when Windows offers that option.

Open File Explorer, paste that path into the address bar, and search the log for the device name, recent date, or installation error. Application setup activity may also appear in:
%SystemRoot%infSetupAPI.app.log

Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM and SFC or use Windows recovery options.
Do not copy the file or run regsvr32
Avoid downloading ext-ms-win-setupapi-logging-l1-1-0.dll from a random DLL website and copying it into an application folder, System32, or SysWOW64. A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the dependency that caused the loader error.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit processes are redirected to SysWOW64. That distinction does not mean that an API-set contract should be manually placed in either directory. The loader and Windows servicing system handle API-set mappings.
regsvr32 is also normally irrelevant. It is intended for COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide registration entry points. An API-set contract is a loader alias, not a COM component that needs manual registration.
If the error still appears
Record these details before trying more repairs:
- The complete error wording
- The executable named in the dialog
- Whether the failure occurs at startup, during driver installation, or when launching one application
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows Security quarantined anything
- The relevant section of
SetupAPI.dev.logorSetupAPI.app.log - The result reported by DISM and SFC
“The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency that the launching executable or host DLL cannot load. The named API-set contract may therefore be only the point where the loader reported failure.

If repairs continue to fail, test storage health, run an offline malware scan, use System Restore, or consider an in-place Windows repair installation. The correct recovery method depends on whether Windows boots normally and whether the problem affects the entire system or one application.
FAQ
Is this a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No specific Microsoft evidence ties this API set to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. It is a Windows API-set contract for SetupAPI logging.

Does the file belong to a game or driver?
The error may be triggered while a game, application, or driver installer is running, but the filename itself does not identify the triggering product. Check the executable named in the dialog and the SetupAPI logs.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. API-set mappings are handled by Windows. Copying an arbitrary DLL into either directory can create architecture, version, or security problems.
Why does the message say the module is missing if the file is not necessarily missing?
Windows loader messages can identify a contract or dependency involved in the failure. The actual problem may be another missing or damaged module.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not for this API set by default. Do not toggle Windows Features unless the affected application’s documentation specifically identifies a required feature.

Normally no. This is not a COM or ActiveX registration problem. Repair Windows or reinstall the application or driver that exposed the error.
What is the safest first repair?
Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run elevated DISM followed by SFC. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application after completing the Windows repair path.
