“ The program can’t start because brdgcfg.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The file brdgcfg.dll was not found,” “Error loading brdgcfg.dll,” or “A required component is missing: brdgcfg.dll.”
The 60-second answer
brdgcfg.dll is a Microsoft Windows networking DLL associated with the legacy Network Bridge components. Its commonly reported description is NWLink IPX Notify Object. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime file.
Do not download a replacement from a DLL website and do not begin with regsvr32. First repair Windows itself:
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and try the affected program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses to restore protected files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.

What brdgcfg.dll belongs to
brdgcfg.dll is associated with Windows networking and Network Bridge rather than a separately installed game or runtime package. Microsoft lists it with other bridge-related files, including Bridge.sys, Bridgemigplugin.dll, Bridgeres.dll, and Bridgeunattend.exe, in its Windows 8.1 file information.
The “NWLink IPX” part refers to an older Microsoft networking transport for IPX/SPX and NetBIOS over IPX. A notify-object DLL is loaded as part of network-component configuration. Microsoft explains this architecture in Adding Registry Values for a Notify Object.
That does not mean that a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation supports the old IPX protocol. The file may exist in older Windows system files even when the legacy networking technology is no longer available. If an old application genuinely requires IPX or NWLink, restoring one DLL will not recreate the entire protocol stack.
What usually causes the error
| What changed | Likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Windows update, repair, or shutdown failed | A protected component or component store is damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file disappeared after an antivirus alert | Security software quarantined it or removed a suspicious copy | Check quarantine and verify the file |
| Only one old program fails | The program may be invoking an obsolete networking component | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The error began after disk problems | The file may be unreadable or filesystem data may be damaged | Back up data and scan the drive |
| The file exists but loading still fails | A dependent module, architecture mismatch, or obsolete protocol may be involved | Check signatures, architecture, and the calling application |
| A startup entry triggers the error | An old utility or uninstalled application is still being loaded | Identify and remove the stale startup entry |
The exact application that triggered the message cannot be determined from the filename alone. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found brdgcfg.dll but could not find one of its dependencies.

1. Check the normal system locations
On a 64-bit Windows installation, a 64-bit system DLL normally belongs in:
%windir%System32
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses Windows’ WOW64 redirection model and may interact with:
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not copy both versions into an application folder. The folder names do not by themselves prove which architecture a file uses.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where brdgcfg.dll
dir "%windir%System32brdgcfg.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64brdgcfg.dll"
A missing result is useful evidence, but it is not a reason to download a replacement. Repair Windows first.
If the file exists, inspect its version information with PowerShell:
(Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32brdgcfg.dll").VersionInfo
Run that command only when the file exists at that path.
Microsoft records known Windows 8.1 copies as version 6.3.9600.16384, with different sizes for x86 and x64 editions. Do not use those records to decide that a file from another Windows build is interchangeable.
2. Check the digital signature
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
%windir%System32. - Right-click
brdgcfg.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and associates the file with Microsoft.
If the file is in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar application directory, or another unexpected location, do not register or replace it manually. A malicious file can use a legitimate filename.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
If the problem started immediately after a security alert:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect the detection and its file path.
- Restore the file only if it was in the Windows directory, its Microsoft signature is valid, and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive.
The exact quarantine steps differ for third-party security software. Do not restore an identically named file from an arbitrary download source.

Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair when brdgcfg.dll is missing from a Windows directory, appears damaged, or several Windows networking features are malfunctioning.
- Save open work.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
A successful result is a repaired file, an SFC message saying it found no integrity violations, or an application that starts normally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If SFC cannot repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. You can extract the relevant SFC entries with:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If DISM fails, Windows Update may not be able to provide the repair source. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when the built-in Microsoft commands solve the issue.

A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave a Windows component absent or invalid.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not insist.
- Run DISM and SFC again using the commands above.
On supported Windows 11 systems, you can also reinstall the current Windows version without removing applications, files, or settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
Microsoft describes this process in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Use System Restore instead when the failure began immediately after a known update, driver installation, or system change:

- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore is a recovery option, not the normal first step.
Fix 3: Repair the program that reports the error
If Windows passes SFC and DISM but only one old program reports brdgcfg.dll, the program may be invoking an obsolete Windows networking component or may have an incomplete installation.
Try these steps in order:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset only after confirming that the program’s data is backed up.
For a desktop application without those options:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Otherwise uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify files, Verify integrity, or equivalent repair command. If the software genuinely requires IPX/SPX or NWLink, use an older supported Windows environment or a virtual machine rather than attempting to rebuild the protocol from a single DLL.
Do not place a downloaded copy of brdgcfg.dll beside the executable. That can hide the real problem and cause the program to load an incompatible or malicious file.
Fix 4: Check Windows Features and network configuration
Do not enable random legacy networking features simply because the filename mentions NWLink. Modern Windows may not provide the old protocol, and enabling unrelated features will not restore it.

For a current network adapter problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and inspect the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If a recent driver caused the failure, use Roll Back Driver when available.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be difficult when an old network component is involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant update; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s driver remains the authoritative source.
Fix 5: Check the disk and remove unauthorized copies
Back up important files before repairing a drive. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /scan
If Windows reports filesystem errors requiring repair, run:
chkdsk /f C:
A restart may be required.
Also check for suspicious copies:
where /r C: brdgcfg.dll
A copy outside Windows directories is not automatically malicious, but it deserves a signature and location check. Run a full Windows Security scan if the file has an invalid signature, appeared unexpectedly, or was modified outside normal Windows servicing.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM or ActiveX registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows networking notify-object DLL is not automatically a COM server.
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 brdgcfg.dll
A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found would not prove that Windows is repaired. The appropriate path for a missing or damaged Windows component is DISM and SFC.
Should you download brdgcfg.dll?
No. Random DLL repositories can provide the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, signature, or a modified file. They also do not repair the component store, dependencies, Windows servicing state, or an obsolete IPX requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching official Windows installation source, System Restore, or Windows repair reinstall. Manual replacement is an advanced recovery procedure only when SFC identifies the exact file it could not repair and the replacement comes from matching, trusted Windows media or an identical supported installation.
FAQ
Is brdgcfg.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows networking and Network Bridge components. The commonly reported description is “NWLink IPX Notify Object.”
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. brdgcfg.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET assembly. Repair Windows and the specific program that reports the error instead.
Does Windows 11 need NWLink?
Modern Windows may contain historical bridge-related files without supporting the old IPX/NWLink protocol. If an old application requires that protocol, use a compatible legacy environment or an application update.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
The missing item may be a dependency of brdgcfg.dll. Check the file’s signature, the application’s architecture, Event Viewer, and whether the program is attempting to load obsolete networking components.
Should I copy the file to System32?
Not from a download website. Let DISM and SFC restore a protected Windows file. Manual copying is appropriate only for controlled recovery using a matching trusted Windows source.
What if the error appears only during startup?
A stale startup entry, scheduled task, network utility, or partially removed program may be calling the file. Identify the calling application before changing system files, then repair or uninstall that application.
