Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, write down:
- The exact program showing the error
- Whether it appears at startup, while opening Settings, or during account management
- The full error wording, such as “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “invalid image”
- Whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The path, signature, and version information shown for any existing
connectedaccountstate.dll
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteconnectedaccountstate.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. It is not a normal game file, Visual C++ Redistributable component, DirectX file, or .NET runtime. The safest fix is to repair Windows, not to download a replacement from a DLL website.
Where connectedaccountstate.dll belongs
On 64-bit Windows:
- The 64-bit copy belongs in
%windir%System32 - The 32-bit copy belongs in
%windir%SysWOW64
On 32-bit Windows, the 32-bit copy belongs in %windir%System32.
This naming is counterintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Microsoft documents this redirection model in its Windows file system redirector documentation.
The file is associated with Windows account-state and COM functionality. It has been observed alongside SystemSettings.exe, so an error appearing in Settings or account management is plausible. That does not prove every error originates in Settings.

Check the file before repairing anything
If the file exists, do not replace it immediately.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
ConnectedAccountState.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
- Open Details and note the product and file information.
A genuine copy should be located in a Windows system directory and identify Microsoft as its signer or publisher. A copy inside a game folder, Downloads, Temp, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves suspicion.
If the file is present but the program still reports that it is missing, the loader may actually be unable to find one of the DLL’s dependencies. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A damaged or incomplete Windows update is a common reason for protected system files to disappear or become inconsistent.
- Press Win+I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist.
- Try the affected program again.
For Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

If Windows Update fails, records the same error again, or cannot download repair files, continue with DISM.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to check protected system files and replace damaged copies. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft provides the same System File Checker repair guidance.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again.
If Windows Update cannot supply the required repair files, DISM can use matching installation media:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine repair source matching your Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair documentation.
Repeating DISM and SFC manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Windows remains the definitive path when a protected component is genuinely missing.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Defender or another security product may have removed a damaged-looking system file.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or removed items.
- Expand any entry related to
ConnectedAccountState.dll. - Check its original path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if it was located in the correct Windows directory and its Microsoft signature and build information are consistent. If the file came from a download folder or an unknown application directory, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

Protection History keeps events for a limited period, so an older removal may no longer appear. Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If malware is a realistic possibility, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen.
Fix 4: Reinstall Windows without removing your files
On supported Windows 11 installations, the least disruptive repair is the built-in reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, applications, and settings. Microsoft describes the process on its Windows Update repair page.

Start setup.exe from within Windows and choose Keep personal files and apps when offered. Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you have backed up everything and intend to erase Windows.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page or Windows 10 download page for installation media.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or account-related change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore.
You can also reach it through Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

Fix 6: Treat driver and runtime fixes as conditional
Do not start by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game launcher. No verified dependency connects connectedaccountstate.dll to those packages.
Use Windows Features only if the error identifies a separate Windows feature:
- Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open it as administrator if prompted.
- Enable or disable only the feature named in the error.
- Restart Windows.
Use Device Manager only if the message also names a device or driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Prefer Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official driver.
- Restart and test again.
If several devices are stale, manually checking hardware IDs and driver packages is slow and easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while installing drivers requires the full version. It is not a substitute for Windows component repair, and a driver reinstall is relevant only when the error points to a device or driver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy the DLL or run regsvr32
A random DLL download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. Copying a 32-bit file into System32, or an older file over a newer Windows component, can cause bad-image and entry-point errors. It can also leave the component store inconsistent.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering DLLs that expose registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. The published exports associated with ConnectedAccountState.dll do not establish that it is a self-registering component. Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to fix this problem:

regsvr32 ConnectedAccountState.dll
Do not force registration from either System32 or SysWOW64 just because the error mentions a DLL.
If the error still remains
Collect these details before attempting more changes:
- Windows edition, version, and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact error text
- The application named in the error
- The file’s complete path
- Digital signature and file details
- Results from DISM and SFC
- Relevant entries from
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log - Relevant entries from
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
To extract SFC entries to your desktop, run Command Prompt as administrator and use:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If the file is correctly located and signed, SFC is clean, and only Settings or one account-management workflow fails, test another administrator account or a fresh Windows user profile. That points toward a damaged profile or Settings state rather than a missing DLL.
FAQ
Is connectedaccountstate.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate and belongs to Microsoft Windows. A copy in the wrong directory, an invalid signature, or a file restored from an unknown download should be treated as suspicious.
Should I download connectedaccountstate.dll?
No. There is no normal standalone Microsoft redistributable for this file. Repair Windows instead.
Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, the 64-bit copy belongs in System32 and the 32-bit copy in SysWOW64. On 32-bit Windows, use System32.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be the wrong architecture, or the copy may be damaged. DISM and SFC are safer than manually replacing it.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?
Not based on the verified identity of this file. Reinstall those runtimes only when the error separately identifies them.
When should I reinstall the affected game or application?
Only when the error clearly points to that program and the Windows copy is healthy. For connectedaccountstate.dll itself, Windows repair is the primary fix because the file is a Windows component.
