Breath of Fire IV is back on modern PC storefronts: GOG released its updated edition on April 25, 2025, and Steam lists its edition for April 1, 2026. This is a return, not the game’s first appearance on PC: secondary histories report an earlier Windows version in 2003.

When did Breath of Fire IV return to PC?

The game originally launched on April 27, 2000, according to GOG’s April 25, 2025 announcement. Historical references report that a Windows edition followed in 2003; that date is documented by secondary sources including PCGamingWiki and Gematsu.

GOG’s modern edition arrived in 2025 as part of its Preservation Program. Steam lists April 1, 2026 as the release date for its edition, and Capcom France announced the Steam arrival on April 2, 2026. The “new release” is therefore best understood as a modern storefront and compatibility return, not a first-ever PC launch.

GOG says 22,000 fans helped bring the game back through its Dreamlist voting program. That is a GOG-reported voter figure, not a sales or player count; the reviewed official material does not establish sales or active-player numbers.

What is different in the modern editions?

Both storefront descriptions document presentation and compatibility updates, but the editions have different distribution terms and stated system requirements. Check the listing for the storefront you plan to use rather than treating one set of specifications as universal.

Edition Access, DRM, and account terms Languages and documented updates Stated minimum requirements
GOG GOG describes its edition as DRM-free. The Capcom Town Store GOG-code listing says the code is redeemed and installed through the official GOG client and requires internet access and a valid GOG account. GOG documents English and Japanese localizations, an upgraded DirectX renderer, windowed mode, V-Sync, anti-aliasing, refined gamma correction, and an upgraded audio engine intended to restore missing environmental sounds and add configuration options. The Capcom Town Store listing for its GOG code states Windows 10/11, a 2.0 GHz processor, 2 GB memory, DirectX 9.0c-compatible graphics, and 600 MB storage.
Steam The Steam listing says the game incorporates third-party DRM (The Enigma Protector) and requires agreement to a third-party EULA. These are Steam-listing terms and should not be applied to GOG. Steam lists English interface and subtitles, plus Japanese interface, full audio, and subtitles. It documents rendering and display options, audio improvements, and keyboard and mouse support. The listing says the re-release was co-developed by GOG. Steam currently states Windows 11, Intel Core i5 8500 or Ryzen 3 3100 or better, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 1660 (6 GB) or Radeon RX 5600XT (6 GB), DirectX 12, and 4 GB available space.

The requirements differ substantially between the listings. The Steam page’s minimums are notably higher than those on Capcom Town Store’s GOG-code page, so confirm the exact product page and edition before purchasing, especially on an older PC.

That controller list belongs to the store’s GOG-code listing; the Steam description separately documents keyboard and mouse support.

What kind of RPG is Breath of Fire IV?

Capcom France describes it as an old-school role-playing game in which Ryu joins other warriors to stop an immortal emperor and save the world. Steam’s description highlights the intertwined stories of Ryu and Fou-Lu, along with skills and magic, dragon transformations, combo actions, and a varied cast. Those plot and feature summaries come from the publisher and storefront descriptions.

Which PC edition should you choose?

  • Choose GOG if DRM-free distribution is important to you. GOG describes its own edition as DRM-free; if obtaining it through Capcom Town Store, the listing says redemption requires a GOG account, internet access, and the GOG client.
  • Check Steam’s terms if you prefer that storefront. Steam’s listing discloses The Enigma Protector and a third-party EULA, and shows Steam-specific hardware requirements.
  • Compare your language and input preferences. GOG documents English and Japanese localizations; Steam specifies which language options include interface, subtitles, and full audio. Capcom Town Store lists several supported controller families for its GOG code.
  • Verify current regional availability and price on the storefront. These can change, and the listings are the relevant place to check before buying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
