The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launched on June 5, 2025, with higher resolution, improved frame rates, HDR support and faster loading, according to Nintendo. Those are official feature descriptions, not published benchmarks: Nintendo’s listings do not specify a resolution, frame-rate target or loading-time improvement. The edition is playable only on Switch 2, and returning players can bring over their original Switch save data.
What does the Switch 2 Edition add?
Nintendo lists four performance and presentation enhancements for the Switch 2 Edition:
- Higher resolution
- Improved frame rates
- HDR support
- Faster loading
Nintendo does not publish numeric resolution or frame-rate targets, nor measured loading-time comparisons in its product listings. These features are therefore best understood as Nintendo’s stated enhancements—not as a guarantee of a particular performance result in every scene or a quantified improvement over the original Switch version. See Nintendo’s Upgrade Pack listing and physical edition listing.
ZELDA NOTES is a companion-app feature
The edition also supports ZELDA NOTES, a game-specific service accessed through the Nintendo Switch app. Nintendo describes voiced navigation and character insights, including insights from Princess Zelda. It is not an in-game menu feature: using it requires a compatible smart device and persistent internet access, and data charges may apply.

Can you play it on the original Switch?
No. The Switch 2 Edition and its edition-specific features are available only on Nintendo Switch 2. The original Switch game remains playable on the original Nintendo Switch, but that version does not gain the Switch 2 Edition enhancements there. Nintendo explains the distinction in its Games Enhanced for Nintendo Switch 2 overview.
Do you need to buy Breath of the Wild again?
If you already own the original Nintendo Switch game, check the Upgrade Pack before buying another copy. Nintendo documents the Upgrade Pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store and retailers. Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access listed upgrade packs at no additional cost, as long as they own the game and maintain an active membership. Eligibility and prices can vary, so check Nintendo’s current listing for your region.
If you do not own the game—or want a physical copy—Nintendo also lists a physical Switch 2 Edition. The right route depends on what you already own and how you prefer to play:

| Expansion Pack membership benefit | You own the game and have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. | Membership must remain active; verify current eligibility with Nintendo. |
| Physical Switch 2 Edition | You do not own the game or prefer a physical copy. | Confirm that the listing is specifically the Switch 2 Edition. |

Can you transfer your old save?
Yes. Nintendo says save data from the Switch version can be carried over to the Switch 2 Edition. The Switch 2 Edition also includes a second save file, which can be useful if you want a separate playthrough rather than replacing your existing progress. There is one direction-of-transfer limitation: a second save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ also confirms cloud saves for Switch 2 Editions.

No. The Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass is separate from the Switch 2 Edition and must be purchased separately if you want its content. Nintendo says the Expansion Pass remains playable on Switch 2 whether you are playing the original Switch version or the Switch 2 Edition. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for the current details.

Is the Switch 2 Edition worth revisiting?
For returning players with a Switch 2, the clearest case for revisiting is the combination of Nintendo’s stated performance and display enhancements, faster loading, save-data carryover and the option of a second save. ZELDA NOTES adds a separate, app-based way to get voiced navigation and character insights. Whether those additions justify the cost depends on your access route: existing owners should check the Upgrade Pack and any eligible membership benefit before considering the physical edition.
If you are still playing on the original Switch, the Switch 2 Edition features are not available on that console. And if Expansion Pass content is part of what you want to revisit, budget for it separately rather than assuming it comes with the edition.
