But it is not a RuneScape remake. Its episode-based world and evolving combat system give it a structure of its own. Whether it hooks you depends on how much you enjoy that kind of gradual progression—and on whether you are comfortable with a game that is still in Early Access.
Why Brighter Shores brings RuneScape to mind
Fen Research describes Brighter Shores as an adventure from MMORPG designer Andrew Gower. Steam calls it an “enchanting point-and-click style RPG.” You begin as a new recruit in Hopeport’s town guard, then encounter a storm, goblin unrest, magic, and corruption spreading through Hopeforest. The combination of a lived-in fantasy setting, click-driven play, and profession-focused progression makes RuneScape a natural point of comparison—not proof that the games share the same world or systems.
The professions are a major part of that appeal. They include Fisher, Forager, Chef, Woodcutter, Miner, Alchemist, Stonemason, Merchant, and Blacksmith. Fen Research advertises “hundreds of hours of gameplay,” but that is the developer’s description, not an independently measured playtime figure.
How its professions and episodes differ
Brighter Shores organizes content around episodes. Each episode has its own lands, side quests, and professions while continuing the central story. That gives the game a different shape from a single continuous world: progression is tied not just to developing skills, but to moving through distinct chapters and their activities.

That structure is worth keeping in mind if you are looking for more RuneScape-style gameplay. The comparison fits the broad pleasures of clicking through a fantasy world and building up professions, but it should not be taken to mean the games reproduce one another’s exact progression or sense of place. A Reddit post asks whether the game should lean further into RuneScape-style gameplay; it is one player’s question, not evidence of a wider consensus.
Combat progression now carries across episodes
Combat has changed as the game has developed. In a February 12, 2025 progress update, Fen Research explained that an earlier proposal felt over-complicated, in part because it involved separate combat and obelisk levels. The developer later announced that Guard, Scout, Minefighter, and Watchperson were merged into one global combat profession.

Under the implemented system, combat items no longer need episode-specific tuning, and players can carry the same weapons and armor when changing episodes. That is a concrete way Brighter Shores has moved beyond a simple old-school throwback: its developers are adapting progression to the game’s chapter-based structure.
What free-to-play and Early Access mean
Steam lists Brighter Shores as Free To Play, developed and published by Fen Research, with a release date of November 6, 2024. Fen Research says its Premium Pass provides access to all released episodes; check the current purchase flow for pricing, since a price is not established here. The Steam listing says Windows and macOS versions are available and that an internet connection is required.

- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
The store page labels the game Early Access. Its developers say: “We want to let people start playing the game without having to wait even longer, but acknowledge that the game isn’t finished yet.” The Early Access disclosure lists planned features including multiplayer events, bounties, parties, profession dungeons, combat improvements, PvP, and Episode 5. Those are plans stated on the current store page, not scheduled guarantees.

If the draw of RuneScape for you is the rhythm of clicking around, taking on practical professions, and watching incremental progress add up, Brighter Shores has a clear reason to be on your list. Go in expecting its own episode-by-episode design rather than a recreation of RuneScape, and bear in mind that it remains an evolving Early Access game. Its strongest case is not that it transports you to the exact same game, but that it revisits some familiar pleasures while building a distinct structure around them.
