What is brmf2wia.dll?
brmf2wia.dll is reported as Brother MFC WIA minidriver, with Brother Industries, Ltd. associated as the publisher. WIA is the Windows Image Acquisition system used by scanners and multifunction printers to communicate with Windows scanning software.
It is not established as a normal Windows system component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or universal file present on every Windows installation. The particular Brother package that installs it depends on the device model.
Third-party file databases report metadata including the internal name BrMf2Wia and version 3.2.10.4, with both 32-bit and 64-bit records appearing in public listings. Those details are not a guarantee that every Brother model uses the same copy.
What usually caused the error?
The most likely causes are:
- A Brother driver installation was interrupted or corrupted.
- A Brother update removed or replaced part of the scanner software.
- The wrong model or Windows architecture was selected.
- A failed upgrade left old driver files and device registrations behind.
- Antivirus software quarantined a Brother component.
- Windows can still print to the device, but its scanner registration is broken.
brmf2wia.dllexists, but another DLL that it needs is missing.- The device is old and its full scanner package is no longer offered for the current Windows release.
The exact application that displays the message is not enough to identify the cause. A scan utility, imaging application, or Brother program may be the component that loads the DLL.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact Brother package
This is the most reliable fix.
1. Identify the model
Look at the printer’s front panel, label, or existing Windows printer entry. Record the complete model name, not just a family name such as “Brother MFC.”
Do not select a similar-looking model. Different Brother devices can use different WIA modules.
2. Remove the Windows device
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
If more than one Brother device is listed, remove only the device you intend to repair unless all of them have failed.
3. Run Brother’s removal utility
Open the installed Brother folder from the Start menu and look for Brother Utilities, Uninstall Tool, or a similar removal option. Follow its prompts to remove the Brother driver and software.

If the normal uninstall fails, use Brother’s official Uninstall Tool for the exact product family. Brother specifically recommends removing failed installations before reinstalling the full package.
Restart Windows after removal. This clears services and driver files that may remain locked while Windows is running.
4. Install the correct package
- Open Brother’s official support site.
- Search for the exact model.
- Choose Windows 10 or Windows 11, matching the installed operating system.
- Download the Full Driver & Software Package or the package named Printer Driver & Scanner Driver.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Choose USB, Wi-Fi, or network installation according to how the device is connected.
- Restart when the installer requests it.
Do not download brmf2wia.dll by itself. The official installer supplies the scanner component together with its expected dependencies, registration, services, and model-specific configuration.

How to tell whether it worked
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the Brother device, and use its scanner option if available. You can also open Windows Scan and check whether the Brother scanner appears.
If printing works but scanning does not, the printer portion is installed while the WIA or scanner portion still needs repair.
Fix 2: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
A disabled WIA service can prevent scanning even after the Brother driver is installed.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if available.
- If the service is stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and test the scanner.
If WIA will not start, note the error shown in the service dialog. A dependency or Windows component problem may exist. Reinstalling the Brother package is still necessary if the DLL itself was removed.
Fix 3: Check Device Manager for a failed scanner driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Look for the Brother device or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows identifies a failed device:
- Right-click the Brother entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Brother package for the exact model.
If the device is not listed, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, check the network connection, or use Action > Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or isolated the DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Search for an item mentioning
brmf2wia.dll, Brother, or the Brother installation folder. - Record the detected path and action.
Do not restore a file simply because its name matches. If the file is in an unexpected folder, has no connection to the installed Brother software, or the alert remains active, leave it quarantined.

Fix 5: Check for a wrong architecture or model package
Public file listings show both 32-bit and 64-bit records for brmf2wia.dll, but that does not tell you which file to copy. The Brother installer and device model determine the correct component.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then return to Brother’s download page and select the matching Windows release and model. Do not substitute a driver for a similar MFC device.
Windows on ARM can require a different setup path. If a traditional Brother installer does not work, add the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and follow Windows’ driver instructions. Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or WIA services behave abnormally. They are not guaranteed to replace brmf2wia.dll, because the file is not verified as a protected Windows system file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the scanner.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. If either command reports corruption it could not repair, repeat the Brother uninstall and reinstall process rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.

Fix 7: Re-add the scanner in Windows
If the Brother software is installed but Windows no longer exposes the scanner:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for the Brother device to appear.
- Follow the connection prompts.
- Open Windows Scan and test it.
For a network device, confirm that the computer and Brother machine are connected to the same network. For USB, connect the cable directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
Should you run regsvr32 brmf2wia.dll?
Usually, no.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 utility is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this Brother WIA minidriver should be manually registered.
Running:
regsvr32 brmf2wia.dll
can create a second error, especially when the DLL is the wrong architecture or one of its dependencies is missing. Use it only if Brother gives model-specific instructions that explicitly require it.

“The specified module could not be found” can mean either that brmf2wia.dll is absent or that Windows cannot load one of its dependencies.
To investigate:
- Note the exact application and action that triggers the message.
- Check whether the Brother scanner works in Windows Scan.
- Check the Brother installation path through the installed program’s properties.
- Review Event Viewer by pressing Windows + X, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for a faulting application or module matching the failure time.
- Check antivirus history again.
- Reinstall the complete Brother package instead of replacing only the named file.

If no compatible scanner package exists:
- Try the latest Brother package offered for the model.
- Add the printer through Windows Settings.
- Check whether Windows detects the scanner separately.
- Test the device from another supported Windows installation.
- Contact Brother with the model number and exact error.
System Restore is a fallback only when the failure began after a recent driver or software change and normal reinstallation is unavailable.
