Broforce is a good fit if you want loud, fast action and don’t mind a screen crowded with explosions. Its destructible levels, oversized action-film parody and up-to-four-player modes give it a clear identity; the same chaos can make precision and coordination harder. Steam’s user reviews are strongly positive, but they are player ratings, not critic scores.
What is Broforce?
Broforce is a side-scrolling run-and-gun game developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital. It was released on October 15, 2015. Its premise is straightforward: move through enemy-filled stages, rescue fellow fighters and use a roster of characters with distinct weapons to push forward.
The levels are built for destruction. Fire and damaged terrain can trigger chain reactions, so a firefight may reshape the route or turn a controlled advance into a cascade of explosions. A level editor is also listed on Steam, alongside single-player, co-op and competitive play.
What do Broforce reviews say?
In the Steam listing snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, English-language user reviews were Overwhelmingly Positive: 96% positive from 20,510 reviews. Steam’s recent-review snapshot was also Overwhelmingly Positive: 95% positive from 235 reviews. Steam also reproduces two critic assessments: IGN described it as “Beneath Broforce’s bad puns and bulging biceps lies a brilliant ode to action cinema and retro gaming,” rating it 8.8/10; The Escapist wrote, “Play this game. Play it for America,” and rated it 9/10. These are the outlets’ quoted reviews, not a combined score.
Is Broforce worth playing?
Its appeal is the way spectacle and mechanics reinforce each other. Characters’ different weapons make rescues and character changes matter, while breakable terrain means the environment is part of the fight rather than just a backdrop. The action-movie parody gives the game a deliberately exaggerated tone instead of aiming for realism.

That design prioritizes momentum over careful readability. When several players, enemies and chain reactions fill the screen, it can be difficult to track every threat or coordinate a tidy plan. If you prefer measured combat, restrained presentation or a story-first campaign, the constant noise may wear thin. If you enjoy arcade action where improvising through a mess is part of the fun, the premise is a strong match.
Is Broforce good for co-op?
Steam lists both online and shared/split-screen co-op for up to four players. Co-op is the natural choice for a group that enjoys friendly disorder: players can fight through the same destructive stages, but explosions and terrain changes can complicate each other’s routes as readily as they help.

Steam also lists competitive modes, so the game is not limited to cooperating through the campaign. The listing establishes these modes for the Steam version; it does not establish that every platform has identical multiplayer features.

What did Broforce Forever add?
Broforce Forever launched on August 8, 2023. The official announcement calls it the game’s final update, and Steam describes it as a free update to the 2015 game. It expanded the campaign and added six characters, four challenge levels, new enemies and hazards, plus bug fixes. The announcement’s “final update” framing means it should not be mistaken for a promise of continuing major content updates.
Which editions are available?
Steam lists the base game and Broforce: The Soundtrack as separate downloadable content. The soundtrack is a digital Steam add-on; the available source does not establish a physical soundtrack edition.
Physical Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 editions were announced in 2021 through a partnership between Special Reserve Games, Devolver Digital and Free Lives. The standard edition was described with a Switch cartridge or PS4 disc, sequential numbering, reversible jacket art and an instruction booklet. A collector package was described with a SteelBook, reserve box and shaped metal art print. That announcement establishes the editions’ contents, not current stock, seller or price, so verify those details with a retailer before purchasing.
