If Brotato keeps crashing, freezing, or will not start on your PS4, try the low-risk checks below one at a time and test the game after each. These are general PlayStation troubleshooting steps—not confirmed fixes for a specific Brotato bug. The official guidance does not establish a current Brotato-specific PS4 crash cause or guaranteed remedy.
Start with checks that do not remove your game or data
Begin here whether Brotato crashes during a run or fails to launch. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

1. Confirm Brotato finished installing
For a digital copy, highlight Brotato on the PS4 home screen, press the Options button, and open Information to check Download Status. If installation is still in progress, let it finish before launching the game. PlayStation includes incomplete installation among possible causes of a game crash (PlayStation Support: game freezes and crashes).
2. Check for a Brotato update
Highlight Brotato on the home screen, press Options, then select Check for Update. Install any available update and test the game again. This is a standard PlayStation troubleshooting step, not evidence that a particular update addresses a known Brotato crash.

3. Update PS4 system software
Check that the PS4 system software is current and install an available update using PlayStation’s official PS4 system software update instructions. Follow the on-screen instructions and let the update complete before testing Brotato.
4. Restart the PS4
For a game that will not start, PlayStation’s startup troubleshooting guide gives this route: press the PS button to open the Quick Menu, choose Power, then Restart PS4. After the console restarts, launch Brotato again. See PlayStation Support: game launch issues.

Check the copy, storage, and save
5. Check the disc or USB extended storage, if you use one
Brotato is listed as a digital PS4 product in the U.S. PlayStation Store, so disc checks apply only if you have a disc edition. If you do, make sure the disc is clean and properly inserted. If Brotato is installed on USB extended storage and will not start, check that the drive is connected properly. PlayStation includes both checks in its game launch troubleshooting. The Store’s product listing is Brotato for PS4 and PS5.
6. Test without the existing save—as a diagnostic only
PlayStation suggests starting a game without its existing save to check whether that save might be corrupted. This test does not repair the save, and deleting or changing saved data could cost you progress. Before making any save changes, review PlayStation’s guidance for backing up and restoring PS4 data and protect a copy of your save. If you are unsure how to run the test without risking your progress, skip it and contact support rather than deleting your only save.

7. Reinstall Brotato
If the earlier checks do not help, PlayStation recommends deleting and downloading a digital game again. Before deleting Brotato, make sure you can sign in to the account that owns it and can access or redownload the game. Then delete the game application, download it again from your Library or the PlayStation Store, let installation finish, and test it. Reinstalling the game is not the same as deleting its saved data; take care not to remove the save while managing the game.
8. Rebuild the PS4 database in Safe Mode
PlayStation’s startup guide includes Rebuild Database as a troubleshooting option. Use the official PS4 Safe Mode instructions and select only Rebuild Database for this step. Do not choose other Safe Mode options as a substitute; some have different effects on console data.

Escalate based on whether other games are affected
9. Contact the publisher, then consider console service or reset only if warranted
If Brotato is the only game with the problem, contact the game publisher and describe what happens, when it happens, and the steps that reproduce it. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Support guidance says: “If the issue only affects one game, please contact the game publisher to see if there are any known issues with the game.” A screenshot or video may help explain the crash. Seaven Studio announced the PS4 and PS5 release for January 30, 2024 (Seaven Studio’s release announcement), but the official sources here do not establish a current Brotato-specific PS4 crash cause or fix.
If several games also crash or fail to start, a console-level issue may be involved. Use PlayStation’s startup troubleshooting and repair guidance before considering a reset or system-software reinstallation. Resetting erases data saved on the console, so back up anything important first; keep this as a last resort after the less destructive steps.
