What is the browser Halo project?
PC Gamer reported on October 1, 2026, that developer Mitchell Hynes had made a browser rendition of Halo: Combat Evolved based on decompilation work. The report describes mouse-and-keyboard support, campaign play, split-screen co-op, and multiplayer. Its multiplayer account uses room links and peer-to-peer hosting, with no matchmaking. These are features reported about a community project, not guarantees of a continuing service; its present availability and future operation are not established.
PC Gamer also relayed Hynes’s claim that the project saw “almost 20,000 games across 115 countries” within five hours. That is a developer-reported figure, not an independently verified usage measurement. The report does not establish a legal determination about the project.

What does The Master Chief Collection include?
Halo Waypoint lists six games in MCC: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, the Halo 3: ODST campaign, and Halo 4. Its product page describes the collection as containing 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps. Those are the counts published by Halo Waypoint; the page does not state a publication year for them.

Halo Waypoint says, “Each of the six games in The Master Chief Collection brings its own multiplayer maps, modes and game types.” That makes MCC the wider choice for someone looking to move among campaigns and multiplayer catalogs in one collection.

Halo Support lists Xbox One, Microsoft Store for PC, the Xbox app for PC, and Steam for PC as purchase routes. MCC is included in some, but not all, Game Pass plans, so check the current Xbox Store listing for eligibility rather than assuming a subscription includes it. Playing MCC online
- All platforms require an Xbox network account for online play.
- On Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, Halo Support says an active Game Pass subscription is required.
- A Microsoft Store PC buyer does not need an active Game Pass subscription to play online. If you access the game through Game Pass, you need a currently eligible subscription.
- Steam PC online play does not require an active Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Halo Support summarizes the account requirement this way: “You need an Xbox network account to play online on any platform that offers Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but you might need an additional type of account depending on what platform you use.” Subscription names and eligibility can change; consult the current platform listing and Halo Support’s online requirements before buying or subscribing.

Pick the browser project for a quick experiment
If your goal is simply to try a classic Halo without installing a full collection, the browser project may appeal—provided it remains available. Treat its multiplayer as the reported room-link, peer-to-peer setup, not as a matchmaking service or a promise of ongoing access.

Pick MCC for campaigns and breadth
If you want multiple Halo campaigns and a large range of multiplayer maps in one package, MCC is the clear scope choice: its official product page lists six games, 67 campaign missions, and more than 120 multiplayer maps. Confirm that the purchase route or subscription you choose is supported on your platform and meets the online requirements.
If you want to play with friends
The browser report describes inviting players through room links, with peer-to-peer hosting and no matchmaking. For MCC, the relevant requirements vary by platform, as outlined above. The available information does not establish which option has better latency, a larger active player population, or a better multiplayer experience.
