Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which Brother model is connected, such as an MFC printer/scanner.
- When the error appears: at sign-in, when scanning, after a driver update, or while removing Brother software.
- What changed immediately beforehand: a Windows update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, software uninstall, or system-image restore.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: open Settings → System → About and check System type.
- Whether
brusbsti.dllis actually missing, or whether Windows says a dependent module could not be found.

The safest repair is to reinstall the official Brother package for the exact MFC model and Windows version rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Do not download a loose copy of brusbsti.dll
Random DLL download pages can provide a malicious file, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file with a misleading name. Even a genuine-looking copy may not fix the problem if another Brother file or dependency is missing.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Brother package
This is the most likely solution after a damaged, incomplete, or mismatched Brother installation.
Remove the existing Brother software
- Disconnect the Brother USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Brother.
- Uninstall the Brother printer, scanner, utilities, and software packages associated with the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
- If the software does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and remove the Brother entries there.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Brother device, choose Remove, and confirm.
Do not remove unrelated printer software unless you know it belongs to the affected Brother installation.
Install the replacement package
- Identify the exact model from the label on the printer or scanner.
- Open Brother’s official support site and select Downloads.
- Choose the exact model and your Windows version.
- Download Full Driver & Software Package for the broadest repair.
- If the problem is specifically USB scanning, choose Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for USB when it is available. Brother describes this package as including WIA and TWAIN scanner drivers.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
Test the installation by opening Windows Scan, the Brother scanning utility, or another application that previously triggered the error. Confirm that the MFC appears as a scanner and that a test scan completes.

Account for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
A 32-bit Brother component can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support. That does not mean every Brother package or every DLL copy is interchangeable.
Choose the installer based on the exact model and Windows version shown on Brother’s download page. Do not force a 64-bit replacement into a 32-bit application directory, and do not use a file labelled for a related component merely because its name looks similar.

If the installer refuses to run, confirm the system type in Settings → System → About, remove the incomplete Brother installation, restart, and download the package again from Brother.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Security software may quarantine a Brother DLL after an update or during a cleanup operation.
Review Microsoft Defender history
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
brusbsti.dll, Brother software, or the scanner installation. - Expand the event and inspect its location, detection name, and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from a legitimate Brother installation.
- Its location is part of the Brother installation rather than a random download folder.
- The security event is clearly a false positive.
- You have confirmed the file’s digital signature and source.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can reintroduce risk. When there is any doubt, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the official Brother package instead.
After reinstalling, run a Microsoft Defender scan and test scanning again. If the file is quarantined repeatedly, record the detection name and contact Brother or Microsoft support rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Determine whether the dependency is missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that brusbsti.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Use these checks:
- Open File Explorer and search the Brother installation folders for
brusbsti.dll. - If you find it, right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- On the Details tab, review the company and description information.
- Compare the location with the Brother installation you just repaired.
- Do not move or rename the file.
If the file exists but the error continues, reinstalling the Brother package is still the correct first response. The installer can restore related files and the expected registration or configuration more reliably than copying one DLL.
Also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Brother device or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove driver software, select that option only when the driver clearly belongs to the failed Brother installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Brother installer again.
If the device is not detected at all, try a different USB port and cable before repeating the software installation.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components and dependencies
brusbsti.dll is not established as a Windows-protected system file, so System File Checker should not be expected to restore the Brother DLL itself. DISM and SFC are useful when Windows servicing components or protected dependencies are damaged.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct Brother package if the error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a missing Brother component.

Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates
A Windows update can repair servicing components, improve hardware compatibility, or replace a damaged system dependency.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the Brother scanner.
- If the error remains, reinstall the exact Brother package after updating.
Do not install an unrelated DLL as a substitute for updating Windows or repairing the Brother installation.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when scanning worked immediately before a Brother installation, driver update, Windows change, or software removal.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review what will change.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. After it completes, test the scanner. If the error returns after reinstalling a Brother update, avoid restoring an old DLL manually; obtain a corrected package from Brother instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the registration entry points expected by Windows. It does not download a missing file, restore dependencies, or repair a damaged Brother installation.

regsvr32 brusbsti.dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error. That result does not prove the DLL is the wrong file. It usually means the file is not intended to be registered this way.
Use regsvr32 only when Brother’s documented installer instructions specifically require it. For a missing or unloadable brusbsti.dll, remove and reinstall the correct Brother package instead.
If you no longer own the Brother device
If the printer or scanner has been retired, restoring the DLL may be unnecessary.

- Uninstall Brother software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove the old printer from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- In Device Manager, remove stale Brother devices.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application that showed the error.
If no current software needs the Brother component, removing the obsolete package is safer than preserving an incomplete installation.
FAQ
Is brusbsti.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence supports treating it as a standard Windows DLL. It is associated with Brother software for USB STI access on Brother MFC devices.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that it is safe. Check its location, digital signature, antivirus report, and installation source. A file found in an unexpected folder or restored from an untrusted download should be treated as suspicious.
Which Brother model installed it?
The filename is associated with Brother MFC software, but it is not documented as universal to every MFC model. Use the model shown on the device and install that model’s official package.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency. Do not move the DLL or register it blindly. Reinstall the correct Brother package and inspect the Brother device in Device Manager.
