brush.dll Missing: Restore ArcSoft Apps Without DLL Downloads

By VGSources Team 10 min read

What brush.dll is and the safest fix

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

brush.dll is an application DLL identified as ArcSoft Brush, published by ArcSoft Inc. If brush.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the ArcSoft program that originally supplied it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

There is no evidence that brush.dll is a Windows component. Public file metadata identifies it as a 32-bit application file with the internal description Brush, reported version 1.0.0.9, and an approximate size of 96–98 KB. Those details are useful for identification, but they do not prove that every historical copy is identical.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

ArcSoft photo-editing software included brush, painting, healing-brush, and retouching features. However, available documentation does not conclusively identify the exact ArcSoft product that installed this particular DLL. It may have arrived with an older photo application or as part of a scanner, camera, or capture-device software bundle.

What the error means

Common reported messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because brush.dll was not found.”
  • “The file brush.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: brush.dll.”
  • “Error loading brush.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

These messages are reported by third-party file indexes rather than Microsoft or ArcSoft diagnostic documentation, so the exact wording may differ.

The message can mean two different things:

  1. brush.dll is absent, damaged, or in the wrong folder.
  2. brush.dll exists, but Windows cannot load one of its dependencies.

Windows commonly searches the application’s executable folder before system locations. An ArcSoft program therefore usually expects its private DLLs to remain together. Moving only the application executable, restoring an incomplete backup, or deleting companion files can cause the same error as a missing brush.dll.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the ArcSoft application

This is the most likely solution because brush.dll belongs to an ArcSoft application rather than Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try Repair in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for the ArcSoft program that fails.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the ArcSoft program again.

Repair keeps the application and attempts to restore damaged files. If it works, the program should open without the brush.dll message.

Not every classic desktop program provides Advanced options or a Repair button. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the application’s entry and choose Reset, if available. Reset may remove application settings, so use it only after Repair.

Reinstall a classic desktop ArcSoft program

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the ArcSoft application in Programs and Features.
  5. Choose Uninstall/Change.
  6. Follow the uninstall wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall the program from its original installer.

Use the installer that came with the ArcSoft product, the original scanner or camera CD, OEM recovery media, or a legitimate backup of the installer. If ArcSoft software arrived with a device, reinstall the complete software bundle rather than installing only the device driver.

After installation, launch the program from its normal Start menu shortcut. If it opens, the missing file and its related application files were restored correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the same error returns immediately, check the installation folder. Do not download a loose brush.dll and place it there. The installer may also need to restore DibPro.dll, EZDLL.dll, configuration files, registry entries, and other application resources.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

If the ArcSoft application worked until a security scan, cleanup operation, or antivirus update, check Windows Security before reinstalling repeatedly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an item whose original path belongs to the ArcSoft installation folder.

Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its name is familiar. Check its original path, the associated ArcSoft installation, and its digital-signature information where available. A filename and publisher field alone do not prove that a file is safe.

If the detection appears to be a false positive, the safer recovery is usually to reinstall the complete ArcSoft application from trusted original media. If you restore the item, scan the entire installation folder and launch the program only after Windows Security reports no further issue.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black | 1080p with auto-light correction, built-in mic, privacy shutter, USB-A, compatible with Teams, Google Meet, Zoom and more
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

If the file is identified as malware, leave it quarantined or remove it. Obtain a clean copy from the original installer instead of restoring the detected file.

Fix 3: Restore the original application location

An older ArcSoft program may fail after its folder was moved, partially restored, or cleaned by disk software.

Check the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the ArcSoft shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Select Open File Location.
  5. Confirm that the executable and its application DLLs are in the same installation tree.

If the shortcut points to an old drive letter, a backup folder, or a location that no longer exists, uninstall the incomplete copy and reinstall the application. Reinstalling into its original location is safer than manually moving individual files.

The publicly reported dependency list includes DibPro.dll and EZDLL.dll, along with Windows system libraries. This is why copying only brush.dll often fails: another ArcSoft DLL may be missing or incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The publicly identified brush.dll is 32-bit, and no reliable evidence of a 64-bit build was found. A 32-bit ArcSoft application normally needs its supplied 32-bit private DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL. Do not assume that placing a 32-bit file in SysWOW64 makes it correct.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 is used for 64-bit Windows system files.
  • SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit Windows system files.
  • Neither folder is a general-purpose location for third-party application DLLs.

The correct location is normally the ArcSoft application directory. If the application is old and will not run after a clean reinstall, right-click its executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, and test an appropriate older Windows compatibility mode. Compatibility mode may help with an obsolete program interface, but it does not replace a missing DLL or fix an incomplete installation.

Fix 5: Reinstall the related scanner or camera software

Some ArcSoft applications were distributed with scanners, cameras, and other imaging devices. If the problem began after reinstalling a device, reinstall the entire original software package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the device temporarily.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Remove the ArcSoft application and related imaging utilities.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the complete software bundle from the original media or trusted OEM installer.
  6. Restart again.
  7. Reconnect the device and test the ArcSoft program.

If the device driver itself is failing, check it in Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the hardware.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If Windows cannot find a driver, use the device manufacturer’s original support package. A driver update will not normally recreate an application-private brush.dll, so reinstalling the complete ArcSoft bundle remains the definitive repair for this error.

Manually hunting through Device Manager for an outdated driver can be slow, especially with older scanner and camera hardware. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan that shows which drivers are outdated; installing drivers is handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for repairing brush.dll.

Fix 6: Identify a missing dependency

“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that brush.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found brush.dll but failed to load a dependency.

Please select C960 webcam as the default camera and microphone device in your application and ensure camera/microphone permissions are enabled, especially on macOS. (Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)

First, look in the ArcSoft installation directory for:

  • brush.dll
  • DibPro.dll
  • EZDLL.dll
  • The ArcSoft program executable

If brush.dll exists but the error continues, do not copy random files from another computer. Reinstall the complete ArcSoft application so that all files come from the same package.

If the new error names a file such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME, the missing component may be a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages and match the application architecture. A 32-bit ArcSoft program normally requires the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.

There is no evidence that brush.dll itself is a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing a runtime should therefore be based on a new error that explicitly names a runtime, not on the original brush.dll message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components

SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They are unlikely to restore an application-private ArcSoft DLL, but they are useful if other Windows files are also damaged.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the ArcSoft application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If both commands complete without finding a problem and brush.dll is still missing, return to the ArcSoft installer rather than repeating the commands.

Running system repair commands repeatedly without knowing which component changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that identifies reported issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional because reinstalling the ArcSoft application remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Fix 8: Use Windows recovery only after application repair

If the failure began immediately after a system change and a restore point exists, System Restore may return the application and its files to an earlier state.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore process.
  7. Restart Windows and test ArcSoft.

On Windows 11, another option is Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, when that option is available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications and personal files, but it is intended for Windows component problems. It should not be the first response to an incomplete ArcSoft installation.

What not to do

Do not download brush.dll from a random DLL site

A loose DLL download can have the wrong version, architecture, dependencies, or modified contents. It can also introduce malware. Even a genuine-looking file may not match the rest of the ArcSoft installation or may simply move the error to the next missing dependency.

Use the original ArcSoft installer, bundled device media, OEM recovery media, or a verified backup instead. No current official standalone ArcSoft download for this DLL has been established.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

Those directories are not repair warehouses for third-party files. Copying an application DLL there can create search-order problems and may affect unrelated software. Windows application loading normally works best when the application uses the DLL supplied in its own installation directory.

Do not run regsvr32 automatically

regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It calls a DLL’s exported DllRegisterServer function.

The publicly listed exports for brush.dll include functions such as InitializeBrushModule, LoadBrush, ProcessBrushTool, SetBrushColor, and SetOpacity. DllRegisterServer is not among the reported exports. Registration is therefore not supported by the available evidence.

Running a command such as this is unlikely to repair the problem:

regsvr32 brush.dll

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that a particular DLL is an ActiveX or COM component requiring registration.

Do not install Windows Features at random

Open Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features only when an application’s documentation explicitly requires a Windows feature. Enabling legacy components will not normally restore brush.dll, and it does not replace the ArcSoft installer.

If reinstalling still fails

Collect these details before seeking further help:

  • The complete error message.
  • The exact ArcSoft executable that fails.
  • The Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • The folder where the program is installed.
  • Whether brush.dll exists in that folder.
  • Whether DibPro.dll or EZDLL.dll is also missing.
  • Whether the problem began after an uninstall, backup restore, disk cleanup, antivirus detection, or folder move.
  • Whether the program came from a scanner, camera, or other device bundle.
  • Whether the error names another DLL.

This information distinguishes a missing application file from a dependency, compatibility, quarantine, or device-driver problem.

FAQ

Is brush.dll a Windows file?

No evidence identifies it as a Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Microsoft Visual C++ component. It is reported as a 32-bit ArcSoft application DLL.

Which ArcSoft program installed it?

The exact parent application is not conclusively documented. It is associated with ArcSoft Brush and may have been included with older ArcSoft imaging software or an imaging-device bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy brush.dll to System32?

No. Restore it through the ArcSoft application’s original installer and keep it in the application’s private installation directory.

Is brush.dll safe?

The filename alone does not establish safety. Verify the original path, inspect antivirus history, and use a clean copy from trusted installation media. Do not restore a file detected as malware merely because it is named brush.dll.

Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not for brush.dll based on the available evidence. Install a Microsoft runtime only if a later error explicitly names a missing MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME file.

Will regsvr32 brush.dll fix the error?

Probably not. The reported exports do not include DllRegisterServer, and regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the correct fix?

Repair or reinstall the exact ArcSoft application, preferably from its original installer or bundled scanner/camera media. If that fails, check quarantine, restore the original installation location, reinstall the complete device bundle, and investigate any dependency named by the new error.
