Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe btosif.dll error usually means an older Broadcom or WIDCOMM Bluetooth component is missing, damaged, or being called by leftover startup software. btosif.dll is not a native Windows DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component.
Before changing anything, establish three details:
- Which program or process shows the message: a Bluetooth tray utility, a startup popup, or another application
- When it appears: during sign-in, when Bluetooth starts, or only when opening a specific program
- Which architecture is involved: 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and application
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Bluetooth package that originally installed the file. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL.
What btosif.dll belongs to
btosif.dll is associated with Broadcom’s WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software, also called Broadcom BTW software. Historical file inventories place it in a folder similar to:
C:Program FilesWIDCOMMBluetooth Software
It may also appear inside OEM Bluetooth packages supplied with a computer, Bluetooth adapter, or USB dongle. Broadcom hardware is commonly distributed through computer and adapter manufacturers, so the correct installer depends on the specific device.

The file is not normally something Windows places in C:WindowsSystem32. Its correct location is determined by the installer and by the application that calls it.
Public records show different historical versions and package layouts, including both 32-bit and 64-bit files. Those records help identify the software family, but they do not establish one universal version for every computer.
What the error message means
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because btosif.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting btosif.dll.”
- “Error loading btosif.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because btosif.dll was not found.”
- “btosif.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean the file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate that a dependency required by btosif.dll is missing. An invalid-format message commonly points to corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an untrusted replacement.
Fix 1: Identify the program calling btosif.dll
Do this before reinstalling anything. The name of the calling program tells you whether you need a Bluetooth package or only need to remove an obsolete startup entry.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the startup list
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries containing WIDCOMM, Broadcom, Bluetooth, or an unfamiliar entry that matches the time of the popup.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location if available.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- Right-click the entry again and choose Disable temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears and Bluetooth still works, the entry was probably an obsolete WIDCOMM utility. You can leave it disabled, then remove the related software through Installed apps.
If disabling it removes needed Bluetooth controls or pairing features, re-enable it and continue with the package repair.
Check the file path
If a copy of btosif.dll exists:
- Press Win+E.
- Search the computer for
btosif.dll. - Right-click a result and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs when present.
A path under a WIDCOMM or Bluetooth Software directory is consistent with the expected software family. A copy in an unexpected temporary, download, or system folder deserves additional scrutiny. Do not replace it until you know which program is requesting it.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the OEM Bluetooth package
This is the most likely solution when Bluetooth software was removed, partially upgraded, or damaged.
Identify the Bluetooth hardware
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Note the adapter name.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- In Property, select Hardware Ids.
- Copy the displayed identifiers into a text file.
If Bluetooth is not listed, check Network adapters and Other devices for an unknown device. A USB Bluetooth dongle should remain connected while you identify it.
Download the matching installer
Use the support page for the computer manufacturer or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer. Search using the exact model and the Windows version installed on the PC. A generic Broadcom installer may reject the hardware or install software that does not match the OEM configuration.
If the adapter is built into a Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, or another branded computer, prefer that manufacturer’s Bluetooth package. For a USB dongle, use the dongle manufacturer’s package. Broadcom’s support search can help locate hardware-specific downloads, but the hardware identity remains the deciding factor.
Do not combine a DLL from one historical release with files from another release. Install the complete package intended for the adapter and Windows architecture.
Repair or reinstall it
- Open Settings with Win+I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for WIDCOMM, Broadcom Bluetooth, or Bluetooth Software.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the package.
- Choose Advanced options if shown, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Bluetooth.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the same Installed apps list.
- Select the old WIDCOMM or Broadcom Bluetooth package.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the matching OEM package you downloaded.
- Restart again.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and test pairing or the program that produced the error.
If the installer refuses to run, confirm that it matches the computer model, adapter, and Windows architecture. Do not force an installer intended for a different device.
When manually hunting through several driver releases and checking which one matches the adapter, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the OEM Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix for a WIDCOMM-specific missing file.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may remove a Bluetooth component after detecting a suspicious or altered file.

Review Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that names
btosif.dll, WIDCOMM, or the Bluetooth installation folder.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The original path belongs to the installed Bluetooth package.
- The file came from the OEM installer.
- The file has a valid publisher signature when one is provided.
- A fresh scan does not identify the package as a threat.
If the detection followed a malware alert, leave the file quarantined until you have verified the installer. The safer response is usually to remove the damaged package and reinstall it from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
Fix 4: Remove a stale WIDCOMM startup entry
Bluetooth can continue working through the Microsoft Bluetooth stack even after old WIDCOMM software has become unnecessary. In that situation, restoring the DLL may bring back software you no longer need.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall obsolete WIDCOMM or Broadcom Bluetooth software.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable any remaining Bluetooth entry that points to a deleted WIDCOMM folder.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and verify that Bluetooth still appears.
- Pair a device or test the application that was showing the popup.
If the startup entry remains after uninstalling, do not delete random registry values. First identify the executable and its publisher. You can also use Settings > Apps > Startup to disable an entry, then remove the associated package through its official uninstaller.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit dependencies expected by that application. Installing a 64-bit Bluetooth package does not automatically repair a private 32-bit DLL directory, and copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system folder is not a valid repair.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Win+I.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
To check an application’s installation location, right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location. A program under a directory such as Program Files (x86) is commonly 32-bit, although the folder alone is not definitive.
Use the architecture specified by the OEM installer. If the package contains separate Win32 and Win64 folders, let its installer place the files rather than copying one manually.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
A driver or Bluetooth compatibility issue may begin after an incomplete update or software change.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test Bluetooth again.
Updates may improve the Windows Bluetooth stack, but they are not expected to recreate a third-party WIDCOMM DLL. Continue with the OEM package repair if the error remains.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They generally will not recreate a missing third-party WIDCOMM file, but they can rule out wider operating-system corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
A message that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations means Windows did not detect protected system-file corruption. It does not prove that btosif.dll is present or correct.
Repeating SFC and DISM while guessing which Windows component changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Bluetooth package remains the correct fix for this third-party file.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the error began immediately after replacing a driver or installing Bluetooth software, System Restore may reverse the change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Use this only when a suitable restore point exists. Personal documents are not normally the target of System Restore, but recently installed programs and drivers can be affected.
Why downloading btosif.dll separately is unsafe
An isolated DLL can have the wrong version, architecture, language, dependencies, or signature. It may also be placed in the wrong directory and create a different loading error. A replacement file does not repair the missing Bluetooth services, registry entries, startup configuration, or companion files installed with WIDCOMM.

Do not copy btosif.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 by default. Obtain the complete Bluetooth package from the PC, adapter, or dongle manufacturer and allow its installer to choose the location.
Does regsvr32 btosif.dll fix the error?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point. There is no established evidence that btosif.dll is an ActiveX or COM component that should be registered manually.
Running:
regsvr32 btosif.dll
may produce “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That means registration does not apply; it does not mean you need another copy of the file. Repair the owning Bluetooth package instead.
