It was the accepted workaround in an October 2024 Steam Community discussion, and one commenter reported that it worked. It is not a guaranteed fix for every Deck or game version.
Try the native Linux runtime first
- In Steam, open Buckshot Roulette’s Properties.
- Open Compatibility and enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (scout), if it is offered, then launch the game again.
This setting was recommended as a way to run the native Linux build in the accepted answer to an October 2024 Steam Deck OLED discussion. A commenter said it worked for them. The same answer mentions Proton 9.0-3 as an option for the Windows build, but neither report establishes that either selection works for all users or current versions. Identify which launch failure you have
Note when the game fails: after the logo, before a game window appears, or later during play. Also note whether you launched the native Linux build or the Windows build through Proton, and whether you were in SteamOS Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode. These details help distinguish symptoms rather than assuming every crash has the same cause.
A separate ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue report describes intermittent crashes while the Windows build was attempting to create a window under Proton in SteamOS Gaming Mode. Its reporter said the problem did not reproduce in Desktop Mode or with the native Linux build under the same conditions. That is one reporter’s test setup—not proof that either alternative is crash-free, or a confirmed diagnosis or fix. See the issue report.

Update and restart SteamOS
If changing the runtime does not help, install any available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck. Steam lists updating and restarting among its general software troubleshooting steps for system instability; this is general Deck advice, not a Buckshot Roulette-specific fix. Use other launch options only as secondary experiments
A user in a November 2024 Steam Community discussion said they used the launch option --rendering-driver opengl3. This is an anecdotal report, not an official developer fix. If you try it after the runtime change, record whether it changes the symptom and remove the option if it does not help. See the launch-crash discussion.

Report a persistent crash to the developer
If the game still fails, use the developer’s bug-report thread and include the Deck model, SteamOS version, selected runtime, mode (Gaming or Desktop), and exactly when the crash occurs. The thread asks users to share logs. It gives this Windows log location: C:UsersyournameAppDataRoamingGodotapp_userdataBuckshot Roulettelogs. That is a Windows path; the cited instructions do not provide a Steam Deck log location, so do not assume it applies on Deck. Buckshot Roulette bug reports.
