Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is a single-player adventure RPG built around a likable three-hero party, exploration puzzles, and turn-based battles that reward timed inputs. It is a strong fit for players who enjoy classic, story-led RPGs and optional challenges; it is less suited to anyone looking for action combat or a purely hands-off battle system. The game is listed for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, with physical editions a separate, availability-dependent consideration.
What kind of RPG is Bug Fables?
Developed by Moonsprout Games and published by DANGEN Entertainment, Bug Fables follows Vi, Kabbu, and Leif as they travel through Bugaria in search of the Everlasting Sapling, a treasure said to grant immortality. Steam lists the PC release date as November 21, 2019. The adventure mixes colorful platforming and puzzle solving in exploration areas with turn-based combat.
The battle system asks for more than choosing a command and waiting: Timed Action Commands can strengthen attacks, and Nintendo describes Turn Relay as a way to shift turns and take advantage of enemy weaknesses. Each hero also has distinct abilities used in exploration and combat, so the party’s different strengths are part of how you approach both puzzles and encounters. If you enjoy learning a compact set of mechanics and applying them with timing, that mix is a central draw; if you prefer battles without input timing, it may feel less appealing. Steam’s game listing and Nintendo’s listing describe the game and its systems.
What is there to do beyond the main story?
Nintendo’s product listing describes seven story chapters, more than 30 sidequests, and 15 optional bosses. It also lists cooking, which turns ingredients into battle items, and the Tattle System, through which party members comment as they discover Bugaria. These details point to a game with optional activities and party personality alongside its main adventure; they do not establish a reliable total playtime.
#1 Best Overall
The ensemble cast is part of the appeal: the story travels with three protagonists rather than a single hero, and their abilities support both problem-solving and combat. Readers who like checking side paths, taking on optional bosses, and hearing character reactions as they explore have more to engage with than the chapter count alone suggests.
How difficult is Bug Fables?
Difficulty depends on the player and on how comfortably they handle turn-based RPGs and timed inputs. In a 2020 developer AMA, Genow said that Hard Mode is intended for people with experience in the genre, while Normal Mode is aimed at people playing their first RPG, while also noting that players approach RPG difficulty differently. That is the developer’s guidance, not an independent difficulty rating. Read the developer AMA.

- Seven lush chapters of story following the heroes across Bugaria!
- Traverse vast overworlds that transition into turn-based combat! Use action commands with Vi's Beemerang, Leif's Ice Magic, or Kabbu's Horn to make attacks more effective or block enemy attacks! Turn the tide of battle with the Turn Relay feature to exploit enemy weaknesses with the power of teamwork!
- Explore unique areas including: The Ant Kingdom, the treacherous Snakemouth Den, the picturesque Golden Hills, The Lost Sands, and Vi's home, the Bee Kingdom!
- Utilize a cooking system to turn ingredients into items that can help you in battle!
- Engage in a Tattle System that lets you hear your party interact with each other as they discover all the secrets Bugaria has in store!
If you are new to RPGs, Normal Mode is the more natural starting point according to that guidance. Experienced genre players who want a stiffer challenge can consider Hard Mode. Your comfort with timing-based actions will also shape how demanding battles feel.
What do player ratings say?
At the time captured on October 8, 2026, Steam showed 4,519 English-language user reviews, 97% of them positive. The PlayStation Store showed a 4.82 out of 5 player average from 571 ratings. These are separate storefront snapshots, not critic scores or a controlled platform comparison; review counts and ratings can change. Steam and the PlayStation Store display their respective figures.

Is there a physical Switch copy?
There has been a physical Switch cartridge edition: Limited Run Games lists standard and collector editions. Its catalog marked both sold out when checked, so this confirms that a physical edition existed, not that one is currently in stock. Check retailer listings carefully and verify that the product is a cartridge edition before buying if physical media is essential to you.
What came in the collector edition?
Limited Run Games’ PS4 collector-edition listing documents a physical soundtrack CD, Vi plush, Spy Cards set, papercraft diorama, and three enamel pins. Those are documented contents of that edition, not evidence that the items are currently sold separately or that the edition is necessary to play.
