PUBG’s UGC Alpha lets players build custom game modes inside PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. It began as a PC-only test in July 2025, later returned as a permanent Custom Match feature, and now has a discovery route through PUBG: Playgrounds, announced in August 2026. Creating Custom Matches requires a BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS account; Playgrounds lets players find selected community modes and join through matchmaking.
What is PUBG UGC Alpha?
UGC Alpha is PUBG’s in-game toolkit for making custom experiences through Custom Match. Instead of being limited to standard battle royale rules, creators can combine rules, gameplay logic, and world-building elements to shape different modes. PUBG introduced it as a creative space to build and customize worlds inside the game, while inviting feedback during development. PUBG’s July 7, 2025 announcement described the original toolkit and its examples.
The initial creation categories were rulesets, devices, and objects. PUBG’s examples included a 3v3v3 Conquest mode built around capture devices, a one-weapon Team Deathmatch, and a parkour course made with placed obstacles. The announcement said sample versions of these modes were available, giving players a starting point to try or adapt.
Who can create a mode, and who can play?

The initial version was PC-only, according to the Update 36.2 patch notes. PUBG planned the original alpha to run for three months, from July through September 2025. That was the test plan, not a current end date: the Update 39.1 patch notes later described UGC Alpha as returning permanently in Custom Match.

Rulesets let creators move beyond the standard battle royale format. PUBG’s examples show the range: a team-based Conquest objective, a Team Deathmatch restricted to one weapon, or other custom rules built around a different win condition.

Shape play with devices and objects
Devices provide interactive gameplay elements, such as the capture devices used in the Conquest example. Objects can be placed to shape a space or create obstacles, as in the parkour sample. Update 39.1 added buildings and destructible objects, seven devices, items and gear, and two Vehicle Spawn Device events. Its listed sample content also included a Defense Mode for up to four players.
These are examples of creation options, not evidence of how many players have used the toolkit. PUBG has not published a player-count or adoption figure in the cited announcements.

How PUBG: Playgrounds changes discovery
Before Playgrounds, creators generally had to gather players and invite them to a Custom Match, while players had difficulty browsing available modes. In an announcement dated August 11, 2026, PUBG introduced PUBG: Playgrounds as a hub for discovering selected popular community modes and entering them through matchmaking. This gives featured modes a more direct path to players than relying only on a creator-organized lobby. PUBG’s Playgrounds announcement explains the feature.
Playgrounds does not make every player-created mode automatically searchable or guarantee selection. PUBG describes the hub as featuring selected modes. Creators can improve a mode’s listing by registering a separate thumbnail rather than relying on the in-mode screenshot, and by setting primary and secondary tags. PUBG may adjust settings such as score limits or round counts when selecting a mode so it plays reliably in the hub.

What the timeline means now
- July 2025: PUBG announced UGC Alpha alongside the approach of Update 36.2, initially for PC and with creation limited to Partners and esports players.
- August 2025: Creation in Custom Match opened to players with BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS.
- Update 39.1: PUBG said UGC Alpha was returning as a permanent Custom Match feature and listed additional creation tools and a Defense Mode sample.
- August 11, 2026: PUBG announced Playgrounds for discovering selected modes and joining through matchmaking.
Accordingly, the original three-month alpha schedule describes the planned first test, not the current status. The current official description supports permanent Custom Match availability, with creation tied to BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS, and a separate hub for selected modes.
