Marathon has launched, but the strongest public confidence remarks before release came from PlayStation and Sony leaders—not from Bungie. The more telling signal from Bungie was its 2025 decision to delay the game after reveal and Alpha feedback, then identify what it wanted to improve. Those statements show a project responding to criticism and moving toward release; they do not establish player reception or commercial success.

Who said Sony was confident about Marathon?

The confidence statements that give this headline its footing were attributed to PlayStation leadership. In June 2025, Game Developer reported that PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst was confident Marathon would not repeat Concord’s mistakes. That is Hulst’s reported view, not a direct statement from Bungie. Game Developer’s report.

In February 2026, GamesRadar reported that Sony CFO Lin Tao was “very confident” about the planned March 5 release after changes informed by playtest findings. The article notes that the wording was translated, so it is best understood as Sony’s reported position, not a verbatim Bungie assurance. GamesRadar’s report.

Why did Bungie delay the game?

On June 17, 2025, Bungie said feedback on the reveal and Alpha had made clear that it needed more time. The studio postponed the planned September 23, 2025 release. Its update described the Alpha as an opportunity to “calibrate and focus” the game, and named the elements it wanted to strengthen: survival under pressure, mystery and lore, raid-like endgame challenges, and its first-person-shooter combat. Bungie’s June 17, 2025 development update.

Arcade Classics - Retro Mini Arcade Game, Full Color Screen, Classic Handheld Electronic Game Console, 90s Toy, Great Gift for Kids 8+, Tetris
  • CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
  • AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
  • FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
  • MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
  • SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!

That delay is a concrete sign that Bungie was responding to feedback rather than simply holding to its announced timetable. It does not, by itself, prove that every requested change was made or that players would like the result.

What changed between the delay and release?

The public record describes a progression from Bungie’s 2025 feedback response to Sony leadership’s later confidence about the release. Bungie’s update explained the intended focus; the later remarks from Hulst and Tao expressed confidence from the platform holder’s leadership. These are different kinds of evidence: the first is a developer’s account of its process, while the latter statements are executive views reported by outside publications.

Bungie announced on January 19, 2026 that Marathon would launch on March 5. The game did launch on that date. Bungie subsequently outlined free seasonal updates and, on May 27, detailed Season 2 systems, content, and an Open Play Week. Those announcements establish ongoing support plans and post-launch communication, not how the game performed with players. Bungie and PlayStation’s release announcement and official Marathon coverage, including seasonal updates.

What public confidence does—and does not—tell us

Executive confidence is not a review score, a player-satisfaction measure, or proof of commercial success. The cited announcements and reports establish that Sony leaders publicly expressed confidence, Bungie delayed the game after feedback, and the game launched with subsequent seasonal plans. They do not provide attributable sales, player-count, retention, or performance figures.

So the headline is fair as a reading of public signals, with an important distinction: Sony’s leaders voiced the specific confidence statements found in these reports. Bungie’s own strongest public signal was its stated willingness to take more time and focus the game after feedback. Neither signal alone establishes whether the final game met players’ expectations.
