Bungie’s Reported $500 Marathon Playtest Bounty: What’s Known

The reported $500 Marathon playtest bounty was not a public signup offer. Its full conditions remain unverified, and Bungie’s later October 2025 technical test was a separate, invite-only event.

A reported $500 bounty was tied to a sustained Marathon playtest commitment, but the available account is secondary and does not confirm the full terms. It was not a public beta prize or an open invitation to sign up. Bungie later announced a separate, invite-only technical test; that event took place in October 2025.

What the reported $500 bounty does—and does not—establish

A ResetEra thread surfaced on August 29, 2025, reproducing a DualShockers headline and excerpts that described a month-long commitment. The thread is a secondary account, not Bungie’s original invitation or participant instructions. The $500 figure is therefore best understood as a reported offer, not a verified public program.

The available account does not establish who was eligible, how payment would be made, how many hours or days participants had to play, or whether surveys were required. Those conditions should not be treated as confirmed. No public signup opportunity is established by the reporting.

How the report differs from Bungie’s later technical test

Bungie announced a separate Closed Technical Test on October 6, 2025. It ran October 22–28, 2025, and was invite-only, covered by an NDA, and limited to North America and Europe on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Bungie also said that taking part in an earlier test did not guarantee an invitation. Those dates have passed.

Why Bungie runs closed tests

Bungie has described testing as a way to assess both technical performance and the moment-to-moment gameplay loop. In its April 18, 2025 Alpha update, the Marathon Dev Team wrote: “Our primary goal is to test two things: technical capabilities and our moment-to-moment gameplay loop.” The update also characterized the build as incomplete and sought feedback on gameplay areas.

After delaying the game, Bungie said on June 17, 2025 that more closed testing would continue, including with Alpha participants, as the team deployed gameplay updates and tested new features. The studio had previously announced a September 23, 2025 release date; the June update said that date was delayed. Read the June development update for Bungie’s explanation.

Is the $500 offer still available?

Nothing in the accessible reporting or Bungie’s later test announcement establishes that the bounty remains active or that players can apply for it now. The October technical test is over, and its application process should not be mistaken for the reported $500 arrangement.

For players interested in Marathon itself, Bungie’s December 15, 2025 development update described it as a paid game and gave a March 2026 release target at that time. That is historical information, not confirmation of current price or availability. Bungie’s named platforms include PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. See the December 2025 update for those details.
