Bungie’s July 31, 2024 restructuring eliminated 220 roles—about 17% of its workforce—and planned to transfer another 155 roles, roughly 12%, into Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Those were separate actions; Bungie did not say that the 155 transferred employees were part of the 220 eliminated roles.
The situation changed again on June 25, 2026, when Sony announced another Bungie workforce reduction affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some members of the Marathon team.

Bungie attributed the decision to a combination of rising development costs, industry-wide changes, prolonged economic pressure, rapid expansion, a broader economic slowdown and a downturn across the games industry. The studio also cited the quality problems surrounding Destiny 2: Lightfall and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon more development time.
Bungie’s announcement described the restructuring as a response to those overlapping pressures rather than as a single-product cancellation.

The 155 roles moving to Sony were a separate measure
Alongside the layoffs, Bungie said it planned to integrate 155 roles—about 12% of its workforce—into Sony Interactive Entertainment over “the next few quarters.” The announcement did not state that these 155 roles came from the 220 eliminated roles.
That distinction matters because the commonly repeated claim that “155 of the 220 laid-off employees were moved to PlayStation” is not supported by Bungie’s wording. The announcement presents three separate actions:

A new PlayStation Studios company for an incubation project
Bungie also said it was working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of its incubation projects into a new studio within PlayStation Studios. The project was described only as an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe.
Bungie did not identify the game or provide a name for the new studio in the July 2024 announcement. The statement therefore does not establish that this project was Destiny, Marathon or any previously named Bungie franchise.

What changed in 2026
On June 25, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced another Bungie workforce reduction. Sony described it as affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. SIE teams supporting Bungie were also reduced.
Sony did not disclose an exact number of roles affected in that announcement. It said Bungie had entered a new phase after the release of Destiny’s final live-service content update, while Marathon remained part of Sony’s portfolio. Sony also said Bungie would continue supporting its team and incubation efforts.
The 2026 announcement is a later event, not a revision of the original 220-role figure. The 220 layoffs and 155-role integration refer to Bungie’s July 2024 restructuring; Sony’s 2026 statement describes a separate reduction and does not provide a comparable exact total.
