Bungie’s Marathon | Reveal Cinematic Short is an official animated film that introduces the game’s Runners, the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV, and the danger surrounding their search for fortune. Written and directed by Alberto Mielgo, it was released on April 12, 2025—not as gameplay footage, but as part of the story world Bungie said would extend beyond the game.
What happens in the Marathon short?
The film centers on Runners venturing into the ruined colony on Tau Ceti IV, where the promise of fortune comes with repeated danger and death. PC Gamer described it as an eight-minute animation; that is the outlet’s reported runtime, rather than a runtime specification in Bungie’s video listing. PC Gamer’s April 12, 2025 report also praised the film, an assessment best understood as a critic’s opinion rather than a measure of universal audience response.
Bungie’s official video description frames Marathon as a team-based extraction shooter: players choose a Runner and scavenge Tau Ceti IV for fortune, power, and answers to the colony’s secrets. The short supplies a cinematic introduction to that premise, not a playable sequence or a substitute for seeing the game’s mechanics.
Who made the film?
Alberto Mielgo wrote and directed the short. Bungie’s gameplay reveal showcase identifies him with “The Witness” and “Jibaro” from Love, Death & Robots. His credited role is on this film; Bungie does not present him as the director or designer of the full game.

The official video credits Sergio Jimenez as producer and Bungie as co-producer, with Pinkman.TV, Agora, and Illusorium listed among the makers. The listed voice cast is Erica Lindbeck as Glitch, Elias Toufexis as Void, Nika Futterman as Blackbird, Donnla Hughes as ONI, and Ben Starr as narrator. The official Marathon video listing contains the film and its published credits.
Is the cinematic short part of the game?
It is an official piece of Marathon storytelling, but it is a separate cinematic rather than gameplay. Bungie explicitly described stories extending beyond in-game moments, naming “today’s cinematic short” alongside its recent alternate reality game. The studio said its seasonal stories could unfold through in-game events, missions, and collectibles as well as outside the game. That makes the film a deliberate introduction to Marathon’s wider narrative, not evidence that its scenes can be played or that every event shown will appear in-game.

The video listing originally gave September 23, 2025 as the game’s release date. That was a planned date, not the final launch. Bungie later announced that Marathon went live worldwide on March 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The official launch announcement is the current source for the release date and platforms.
The short therefore serves two useful roles: it establishes the game’s tone and world on its own, and it offers one piece of the storytelling Bungie said would reach beyond play. Its animation and direction give it a distinct identity from the gameplay reveal, while its premise points toward the high-risk scavenging at the heart of the released extraction shooter.
