Bungie’s Marathon is already out: it launched on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV, where players take on the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners.
When did Marathon release?
Marathon released worldwide on March 5, 2026. Bungie’s March 4 launch notice said servers would open at 10 a.m. Pacific Time the next day, and Bungie confirmed the game was live in a March 5 announcement. That later launch confirmation supersedes the pre-release release-date wording still present in Bungie’s FAQ.
What platforms is Marathon on?
Bungie announced Marathon for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The March 4 launch notice says console players need an active online subscription to play. Bungie announced full cross-play and cross-save; cross-save requires an internet connection, compatible copies for each system you use, and the relevant network account linked to a Bungie.net account. Consult Bungie’s current support guidance for account-linking and setup details.
What kind of game is Marathon?
Bungie describes Marathon as a “sci-fi PVP extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV.” Players are Runners—cybernetic mercenaries who explore the planet and try to extract with what they find. You can play solo or as part of a crew.

The game shares a universe with Bungie’s original Marathon trilogy, but it is neither a remake nor a direct sequel. Its launch notice described six factions, six Runner shells, three zones, and 28 weapons at launch; those are March 2026 launch figures, not a current count of everything available in the live game.

Bungie’s editions guide distinguishes the base game, digital extras, and a physical collector product. The Collector’s Edition includes its game access as a Deluxe game code, not as a physical disc.
