Choose linen for most clothing, cotton canvas for firm structure, and burlap only when its coarse, rustic character is deliberate. Linen is breathable, absorbent and quick-drying, so it is the most comfortable of the three against skin in warm weather. Canvas is a strong, closely woven cotton that supports jackets, chore coats, structured skirts and utility pieces. Ordinary burlap is coarse jute (or sometimes flax or hemp), sheds loose fibers and usually needs a lining or limited skin contact.

The label alone is not enough to predict behavior. Fiber content, weave density, weight, finish and previous treatment can change drape, stiffness, shrinkage and comfort. Before cutting a garment, prewash a representative sample according to its care label, make a test seam and evaluate the cloth after it has dried and been pressed.

Quick answer: which fabric fits your project?

Project priority Best starting choice Why Main compromise
Cool, breathable everyday clothing Fine- or medium-weight linen Flax fibers absorb and move moisture outward, and the cloth feels cool to the touch. It wrinkles readily, has little elasticity and may shrink unless stabilized.
Firm silhouette or hard-wearing garment Light or medium cotton canvas Its close weave and firmness hold shape for chore coats, structured skirts, jackets and costume panels. Heavier weights can feel stiff, less airy and bulky at seams.
Rustic costume, trim, bag or millinery base Burlap or jute The coarse, irregular surface creates an unmistakable rustic effect and has useful body. Ordinary burlap is rough, sheds and is uncomfortable on uncovered skin.
Fluid drape Lightweight linen Fine linen can hang softly while retaining a natural texture. Soft drape does not eliminate creasing or shrinkage planning.
Maximum structure and abrasion resistance Heavy canvas (cotton duck) Heavy plain-woven cotton is designed for aprons, totes, backpacks, duffels and other hard-wearing goods. Usually too rigid and heavy for a comfortable full dress.

If two fabrics seem similar in a shop, compare the actual swatches rather than relying on the name. A light canvas may work in a garment where a heavy one will not; a finished or blended linen may behave differently from untreated flax cloth; and “burlap” can describe several plant fibers and weights.

What burlap, linen and canvas actually are

Burlap and jute

The International Trade Centre defines burlap as “Originally coarse plain weave jute fabric used for sacking and upholstery lining.” The Museum of Fine Arts Boston CAMEO database describes it more broadly as “A coarse, plain weave fabric made from jute, flax, or hemp.” Those definitions explain its behavior: the yarns and surface are visibly rougher and less refined than apparel linens or shirtings, and loose fibers can shed during cutting and wear.

Use ordinary burlap when texture is the design objective: rustic costumes, decorative panels, trims, bags, millinery bases, stage props or home décor. For clothing, line it, place it over an underlayer, or keep it away from high-friction areas such as necklines, armholes and inner thighs. Inspect every cut edge for loose yarns before construction. A lining can protect skin and clothing underneath, but it does not make burlap a soft fabric.

Linen and flax

Linen is spun from the stem fiber of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. The Canadian Conservation Institute characterizes new linen as strong, absorbent, quick-drying and cool to the touch. The Linen Lounge reports that linen can absorb up to 20 percent of its own weight in moisture and actively transport that moisture outward instead of leaving it in the fabric. Flax fibers are stronger when wet than when dry; depending on the yarn, tear resistance can be 20 to 30 percent higher than cotton.

Those properties make fine and medium-weight linen useful for shirts, dresses, skirts and trousers. Linen still has limitations. It has low resiliency, so it wrinkles quickly, and repeated sharp folds can eventually break fibers. It also has little elasticity and can shrink unless it has been treated. Plan for a relaxed, naturally rumpled appearance or include pressing in the garment’s care routine rather than expecting a permanently smooth surface.

Canvas and cotton duck

The International Trade Centre defines canvas as a “strong, firm closely woven cotton” fabric and notes that canvas and duck are sometimes used interchangeably, with canvas generally referring to heavier weights. Big Duck Canvas describes cotton duck as a heavy, plain-woven cotton used for aprons, totes, backpacks, duffels and other hard-wearing sewn goods. New duck can feel stiff; washing and wear may make it more comfortable, but it remains more structured than linen.

Light canvas can support a jacket, chore coat, structured skirt, hat, corset-style panel or costume. Heavy canvas is normally a better choice for bags, aprons and utility pieces than for an entire garment. The weight determines not only comfort but also seam bulk, needle choice, pattern ease and how much the finished item can bend.

How the fabrics compare in practical dressmaking

Criterion Burlap Linen Canvas / cotton duck
Skin comfort Usually coarse and scratchy; line or limit contact. Best of the three for warm-weather wear; cool and absorbent. Light weights can be wearable; heavy weights may feel stiff.
Drape Rustic body with an open, irregular surface. Light weights can hang softly; natural creasing is expected. Holds shape and resists fluid drape.
Airflow and moisture An open weave does not overcome the rough hand; performance varies by construction. Absorbs and releases moisture quickly; feels cool. Airiness decreases as weight and density increase.
Structure Useful for rustic volume and supports, not refined shaping. Relaxed structure; can be tailored in firmer weights. Strong, firm and highly shape-supportive.
Durability Robust for sacks and lining, but not a refined apparel surface. Strong overall; repeated sharp creasing can damage fibers. Designed for hard-wearing applications and abrasion.
Wrinkle resistance Texture hides some creasing, but edges and folds remain irregular. Poor; wrinkles are part of its characteristic look. Usually better than linen, though folds depend on weight and finish.
Elasticity Not a stretch fabric. Little natural elasticity. Generally firm with little give unless blended or specially finished.
Shrinkage Check the specific cloth and care label. Allow for possible shrinkage unless stabilized; prewash before cutting. Check the specific cloth, especially after washing.
Typical apparel role Costume, trim, outer layer or lined accessory. Shirts, dresses, skirts and trousers. Jackets, chore coats, structured skirts, workwear and costume panels.

Choose by garment and use case

Dresses and summer tops

Start with fine- or medium-weight linen when the dress needs airflow, moisture handling and a relaxed fall. A linen dress can be comfortable in heat because the fiber absorbs perspiration and moves moisture outward. Build in enough wearing ease for a fabric with little elasticity, and decide whether the design expects pressed crispness or intentional rumpling.

Canvas can make a striking structured dress, but select a lighter weight and test the skirt or bodice for bending comfort before buying enough yardage. Heavy canvas is more likely to make a full dress feel rigid and warm. Ordinary burlap is a specialty costume choice: use it as a lined overdress, yoke, panel or trim when the rough surface is part of the character, not as an unlined substitute for dress linen.

Shirts, blouses and trousers

Linen is the practical default for shirts, loose blouses and warm-weather trousers. Its absorbency and quick drying help in hot conditions, while its low elasticity means the pattern must provide movement through cut and ease rather than stretch. Pressing after laundering can restore a sharper look, but frequent hard creasing at the same fold should be avoided.

Canvas works for work shirts, chore coats and trousers that need a firm, protective hand. Use a lighter canvas for garments that must bend at the elbow or knee. Burlap is generally unsuitable for a next-to-skin shirt or trouser because its coarse yarns can irritate and its open, irregular surface is difficult to finish cleanly.

Jackets, chore coats and workwear

Canvas is the strongest candidate when the garment must hold a silhouette, support pockets or tolerate abrasion. Cotton duck’s close plain weave gives a stable base for topstitching and utility details. Before cutting, check the folded thickness at pocket corners, collars and facings; a heavy cloth can create more bulk than the pattern’s seam allowances anticipate.

Linen can produce an unstructured jacket or relaxed overshirt, particularly in a firm medium weight, but it will not behave like canvas. Burlap can serve as a rustic outer layer or removable panel when lined and when loose yarns are controlled.

Skirts, corset-style panels and hats

Light canvas is useful when a skirt, corset-style panel or hat needs body without the full rigidity of utility duck. Linen suits softer skirts and can be gathered or pleated, provided you accept that sharp folds may crease permanently and repeated pressing can stress the fibers. Burlap supplies a theatrical, rustic volume for costumes and millinery bases; keep a smooth lining or interlining between it and skin.

Bags, aprons and accessories

Canvas or cotton duck is the normal starting point for totes, backpacks, duffels and aprons because the fabric was developed for firm, hard-wearing use. Heavy burlap also works for rustic bags and decorative accessories, especially when a lining contains shedding fibers. Linen can make attractive lightweight bags or aprons, but choose a weight and construction appropriate to the load rather than assuming that all linen has canvas-like strength.

A fabric-selection test you can perform before cutting

Use a sample at least large enough to fold, seam and launder. The goal is to observe the actual cloth you purchased, including its finish and dye, rather than relying on a generic fabric description.

  1. Record the specification. Note fiber content, stated weight, width, weave description and care instructions. “Linen,” “canvas” and “burlap” are category names, not complete performance specifications.
  2. Wash and dry the sample. Follow the care label. If the label is absent, treat the sample conservatively and document what you did. Compare its dimensions before and after washing so shrinkage is accounted for in the pattern.
  3. Check hand and drape. Hold the sample by one corner, let it hang, then fold it over your hand. Linen should show more fluidity in lighter weights; canvas should hold a fold; burlap should show rustic body and an irregular surface.
  4. Test skin contact. Wear or rub the dry sample against the neck, inner arm and waist for several minutes. Stop if the burlap scratches or if a stiff canvas edge feels uncomfortable. A lining may solve contact problems but cannot remove bulk.
  5. Make a seam sample. Sew the intended seam, press it, turn it and flex it repeatedly. Look for yarn pull-out, fraying, skipped stitches, excessive thickness and a seam allowance that will not lie flat.
  6. Test pressing and creasing. Fold the swatch sharply, press it as the care label permits, then unfold it. Linen’s low resiliency means creases may remain; repeated sharp folding can contribute to fiber breakage.
  7. Test the finished direction. Mark warp and weft, check stretch across and along the grain, and decide whether the pattern needs extra ease. Do not assume that an open-looking burlap or a firm canvas has useful garment stretch.

Construction adjustments for each fabric

Working with burlap

  • Cut with a clean, stable edge and handle pieces gently so loose yarns do not distort the shape.
  • Plan a lining, underlayer or facing anywhere the cloth could touch skin.
  • Keep high-friction zones smooth and inspect the inside for stray fibers before wearing.
  • Use burlap where its rough texture is intentional; replacing a refined apparel fabric with it will not improve comfort or drape.

Working with linen

  • Prewash before cutting unless the fabric has been explicitly stabilized, and allow the measured shrinkage in your pattern.
  • Provide movement through ease and construction because linen has little elasticity.
  • Support areas that will be folded repeatedly, and avoid designing a permanent razor-sharp crease where the garment will flex.
  • Choose pressing or a relaxed finish deliberately; neither approach eliminates linen’s natural tendency to wrinkle.

Working with canvas

  • Match the pattern to the weight: light canvas for wearable structure, heavy duck for utility goods and selected workwear.
  • Check needle compatibility, stitch formation and seam bulk on scraps before sewing the garment.
  • Reduce unnecessary layers at collars, pocket corners and facings if the test seam becomes rigid.
  • Recheck wearing ease at elbows, knees and waist because a firm cloth cannot compensate through stretch.

Care, laundering and long-term wear

Follow the individual care label for all three fabrics; the fiber name does not guarantee one universal washing method. Linen and other plant-fiber fabrics can shrink, so a prewash is part of pattern preparation rather than an optional finishing step. Canvas may soften after washing and wear, but that change should be observed on a sample before you rely on it for fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store linen without forcing the same sharp fold every time. Repeated creases are where its fibers are most vulnerable. Burlap should be kept dry and protected from abrasion that can release more fibers. Canvas benefits from construction that can tolerate its weight: reinforce stress points through the pattern and avoid assuming that a seam suitable for lightweight linen will handle heavy duck.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The bolt says linen, so it must be cool and soft.”

Linen fiber is absorbent and cool, but weight, finish and blend alter the result. Test the actual cloth for drape, hand and moisture behavior, then choose a pattern with appropriate ease.

“Any canvas can make a comfortable dress.”

Canvas is a category that includes different weights. Heavy cotton duck may hold an excellent shape while making a full dress stiff and tiring. Move to a lighter canvas, restrict the heavy cloth to panels or outerwear, or choose linen when airflow and fluid movement matter more.

“Burlap is open, so it will be breathable.”

An open weave does not make a rough fabric comfortable. Ordinary burlap can scratch, shed and catch on skin. Line it or keep it as an outer layer, trim, bag or costume surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The sample fit before washing, so the garment will fit.”

Plant-fiber cloth can change dimensions after laundering. Wash and dry the sample as directed, measure it again and only then finalize the pattern.

“A strong fabric needs no seam testing.”

Strength in the roll does not guarantee a stable seam. Heavy canvas can create bulk; burlap can lose yarns at an edge; linen can weaken at repeated folds. Sew, press and flex a sample seam before committing to the garment.

A simple decision framework

  1. Start with skin contact. If most of the garment touches bare skin, choose linen unless the design specifically demands another texture or structure.
  2. Set the silhouette. Choose canvas when the garment must stand away from the body, support pockets or resist abrasion. Choose linen for a softer, relaxed fall.
  3. Decide whether rough texture is the point. If the answer is no, remove ordinary burlap from consideration. If yes, add a lining or underlayer and contain loose yarns.
  4. Match weight to movement. Reserve heavy canvas for bags, aprons and utility sections; reserve lightweight cloth for areas that bend and drape.
  5. Validate the actual fabric. Prewash, measure, test comfort, sew a seam and check pressing before cutting the full project.

Final recommendation

For a wearable dress, shirt, skirt or trouser, begin with fine- or medium-weight linen and plan for wrinkles, shrinkage and low stretch. For a structured jacket, chore coat, workwear piece, hat or utility accessory, select a canvas whose weight matches the required movement and seam thickness. Choose burlap only when its rustic, coarse surface is an intentional visual feature, and protect the wearer with lining or limited skin contact.

That decision remains valid even when two swatches share the same fiber name: the finished fabric’s weight, density, finish and treatment determine the garment you will actually wear.
