Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →burnlib.dll is usually a legacy Winamp component, not a Windows file. If burnlib.dll is missing, Windows may refuse to start Winamp or its Rip & Burn features.
Before changing anything, check:
- Which program shows the error? Read the application name in the message, or right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target. If the executable is Winamp, use the repair steps below.
- When does it happen? Note whether the error appears when Winamp starts, when opening the Media Library, or while ripping or burning a disc.
- Which installation is being used? Multiple Winamp folders can exist. Check the shortcut target and repair that installation rather than a different copy.
- Is Windows 64-bit while Winamp is 32-bit? That combination is normal. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit Winamp folder or place either file in
System32.
What burnlib.dll belongs to
Available Winamp support records identify burnlib.dll as part of Winamp’s Rip & Burn feature and its Sonic CD ripping and burning components. It is normally stored in the main Winamp installation directory, for example:
C:Program FilesWinampburnlib.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Winampburnlib.dll
It should not ordinarily be installed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Historical Winamp 5.x installations clearly used this component, but there is no authoritative public version-by-version file manifest. Do not assume that every modern Winamp package contains the same CD-related files. In particular, the exact contents of current Winamp releases cannot be confirmed from public documentation alone.
The error may say:
- “The program can’t start because burnlib.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting burnlib.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because burnlib.dll was not found.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of burnlib.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.

Fix 1: Repair Winamp and restore Rip & Burn
This is the safest and most likely solution.
- Close Winamp.
- Back up playlists, media-library data, and other personal files.
- Obtain the Winamp installer from the official Winamp website or from a verified installer you already possess.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows displays a permission prompt, select Yes.
- Choose the existing Winamp installation folder if the installer asks where to install.
- Select the Rip & Burn, CD support, or equivalent Media Library component when component choices appear.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Winamp from the shortcut that originally produced the error.
A successful repair should let Winamp open without the burnlib.dll message. If the error returns immediately, the installer may have preserved incompatible files from an older installation. Continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Perform a clean Winamp reinstall
This is particularly important if the problem began after upgrading Winamp or if several Winamp versions are installed.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Find Winamp.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the old Winamp installation folder, commonly under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - Do not delete it immediately. Confirm that playlists and personal files are backed up elsewhere.
- Remove only the remaining Winamp program folder if it contains stale installation files.
- Install one consistent Winamp version from the official source.
- Select the Rip & Burn or CD-related component during setup.
Do not delete %AppData%Winamp until you have backed it up. Winamp stores user settings separately from its program files, and removing that folder may discard configuration data.
If Winamp still fails after reinstalling, temporarily rename the settings folder:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%AppData%. - Press Enter.
- Find the
Winampfolder. - Rename it to
Winamp.backup. - Start Winamp again.
If the program opens, the original profile was damaged. Restore playlists or settings selectively from the backup rather than replacing the new folder wholesale.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have quarantined or deleted the file. Do not restore a random copy just because its filename matches.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Winamp or
burnlib.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from a verified Winamp installation.
- Reinstall or repair Winamp afterward.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection.
Do not disable antivirus protection to use a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. If the file’s origin or integrity is uncertain, remove the old installation and install Winamp again from its official source.
Fix 4: Check whether another dependency is missing
A DLL can be present and still fail to load because another library or component is absent or incompatible.
- Open the Winamp installation folder.
- Confirm whether
burnlib.dllexists beside the Winamp executable and other Rip & Burn files. - If it exists, do not move or rename it.
- Check Event Viewer for a related application error:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error at the time Winamp failed.
- Note the faulting application and any named module.
- Repair the complete Winamp installation instead of replacing only
burnlib.dll.
Do not claim a precise 32-bit or 64-bit architecture for this particular DLL without inspecting the actual file. Historical desktop Winamp software is principally associated with 32-bit operation, and 32-bit Winamp can run on 64-bit Windows, but the operating system architecture does not prove the DLL architecture.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are secondary checks. They are unlikely to restore burnlib.dll because the file is associated with Winamp rather than the protected Windows system files.

First, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if prompted.
Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents DISM repair procedures and System File Checker.
Restart Windows after both commands complete, then test Winamp. If Windows reports repaired system files but Winamp still reports burnlib.dll, reinstall Winamp. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for restoring the application that owns the DLL.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Winamp remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Fix 6: Check optional Windows features only for broader failures
Windows Features are not the normal source of burnlib.dll, but checking them can help if other older applications also fail.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Look for features relevant to other failing programs, such as legacy application support.
- Enable a feature only when the affected application specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random features as a way to replace burnlib.dll. No evidence identifies this file as a Windows Feature component.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the failure involves hardware
A display, storage, or optical-drive driver can cause disc operations to fail, but there is no evidence that a driver package supplies burnlib.dll.
If Winamp opens but fails only when using an optical drive:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the affected drive.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the drive.
You can also expand Storage controllers and check for warning icons. Do not remove a working controller driver without a recovery plan.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be tedious when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Winamp.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use these common “fixes”
Do not download burnlib.dll separately
Random DLL sites may provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. A copied file can also belong to a different Winamp release and create a second loading failure.
The safe sources are:
- The official Winamp installer
- A verified backup of the same Winamp installation
- A repair or reinstall of the exact Winamp copy named in the error
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows components and system-wide libraries. An application-local DLL belongs with the application that loads it. Copying it into a Windows folder can cause version conflicts and makes future diagnosis more difficult.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that burnlib.dll is a COM or ActiveX component that requires registration. Microsoft describes this behavior in its Regsvr32 documentation.

Running:
regsvr32 burnlib.dll
will normally not repair a missing Winamp component and may produce another misleading error.
If the error still appears
Confirm these points before replacing anything else:
- The message names Winamp or another executable you recognize.
- You repaired the Winamp folder used by the shortcut.
- Rip & Burn or CD support was selected during installation.
- Old Winamp folders were removed after backing up personal data.
- Antivirus did not quarantine the restored file.
burnlib.dllis beside the Winamp files rather than in a system directory.- The error is not actually naming a missing dependency.
- You are not mixing files from different Winamp versions.
If a clean reinstall fails, inspect the full application error in Event Viewer and identify the calling executable. If another program is requesting burnlib.dll, repair that program instead. The filename alone is not proof that every burnlib.dll error originates from Winamp.
FAQ
Is burnlib.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as a legacy Winamp application component associated with Rip & Burn.
Which Winamp feature uses it?
It is associated with CD ripping and burning, including the Rip & Burn media-library component and Sonic CD functionality.
Does Winamp 5.9.2 definitely include burnlib.dll?
That cannot be confirmed from the current public support material. Winamp releases have not always packaged CDDB and related components identically.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the primary fix. No verified evidence identifies those packages as the source of burnlib.dll. Repair Winamp first.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Do not assume from the filename. Historical Winamp desktop software is mainly associated with 32-bit operation, but the actual DLL must be inspected to establish its architecture.
Will SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while burnlib.dll is associated with Winamp. Reinstall the owning application.
What if the file exists but Winamp still will not start?
A dependency may be missing, or files from different Winamp versions may be mixed. Perform a clean reinstall and inspect the application error rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.
