“The code execution cannot proceed because c1xx.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”

c1xx.dll is a Microsoft Visual C++ compiler component, and a c1xx.dll error usually means that Visual Studio or an MSVC Build Tools installation is incomplete, damaged, or being called from the wrong toolset path.

Which fix applies to you

Start by identifying the program that displayed the error and the full path shown in the message.

  • The error appears while building C++, running CMake, using MSBuild, or opening a Visual Studio project: repair Visual Studio or Visual Studio Build Tools, then install the Desktop development with C++ workload.
  • The error names an old MSVC or Visual Studio directory: the project may be pinned to a toolset version that is no longer installed.
  • The error appears when launching a development utility, SDK, modding tool, plugin, or build helper: repair or reinstall that application, then install the exact toolset it requires.
  • The error appears in a game or ordinary consumer application: verify the application files and repair the application first. A consumer program that only runs precompiled code normally should not require the C++ compiler front end.
  • Windows Security shows that the file was quarantined: investigate Protection History before restoring anything.
  • Several unrelated Windows features are failing: run DISM and System File Checker after repairing the Visual Studio installation.
  • You were told to download c1xx.dll or run regsvr32: do not do either. The correct repair is to restore the complete product that supplied the file.

The calling executable and full path matter more than the filename alone. They tell you whether the problem belongs to Visual Studio, Build Tools, a third-party application, or a security event.

What c1xx.dll is

c1xx.dll is the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler front end. The cl.exe compiler invokes it to parse C++ source and produce an intermediate representation for the compiler back end. Microsoft describes the compiler back end as a separate component that performs later compilation work.

It is installed as part of the Microsoft Visual Studio and MSVC Build Tools toolset. It is not a standard Windows operating-system DLL and should not normally be present in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The file normally exists below a versioned MSVC directory similar to:

<Visual Studio installation>VCToolsMSVC<toolset-version>binHostx64x64
<Visual Studio installation>VCToolsMSVC<toolset-version>binHostx86x86

The exact directory depends on the Visual Studio release, toolset version, host architecture, and target architecture. Microsoft documents the MSVC toolset layout in its C++ Build Tools installation guidance.

The related compiler files are not interchangeable across all releases. Copying a file from an unrelated toolset can create a second, less obvious mismatch.

Why the Visual C++ Redistributable usually is not the fix

The Visual C++ Redistributable is a runtime package. It supplies libraries that completed applications may need while they run.

c1xx.dll is different. It is part of the compiler toolchain used to build software. Installing only vc_redist.x64.exe or vc_redist.x86.exe generally does not install the compiler front end.

Use the Redistributable only when the affected application specifically reports a missing runtime library and its vendor documents that package as a requirement. For c1xx.dll, begin with Visual Studio or Visual Studio Build Tools instead. Microsoft explains the distinction in its documentation for the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Fix 1: Repair Visual Studio or Build Tools

This is the most likely fix when the error occurs during a C++ build, CMake configuration, MSBuild operation, Unreal development workflow, or Visual Studio update.

Repair an installed Visual Studio instance

  1. Close Visual Studio, terminals, build tools, and applications that may be compiling code.
  2. Open the Start menu.
  3. Type Visual Studio Installer.
  4. Open the installer.
  5. Find the installed Visual Studio product.
  6. Select More or the three-dot menu.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Confirm the repair and allow the installer to complete.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Reopen the project or Developer Command Prompt and repeat the failed build.

Repair reinstalls product components, but Microsoft warns that it can reset some local settings, extensions, and profiles. Save any important configuration before starting. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio repair procedure.

Modify the C++ workload

If repair does not restore the file, the C++ workload may never have been installed or may be missing part of the toolset.

  1. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Find Visual Studio or Build Tools.
  3. Select Modify.
  4. Select the Workloads tab.
  5. Check Desktop development with C++.
  6. Open the Individual components tab.
  7. Confirm that the MSVC build tools for the required x86 and x64 targets are selected.
  8. Keep a suitable Windows SDK selected if the project requires one.
  9. Select Modify or Install.
  10. Restart Windows when installation finishes.
  11. Open a new Developer Command Prompt and retry the build.

The workload is identified by Microsoft as Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.VCTools. The available MSVC components and architecture options are listed in the Visual Studio Build Tools workload documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the product is not listed in Visual Studio Installer, download Visual Studio or the official Build Tools installer from Microsoft’s Visual Studio downloads page. Select the product and workload that match the application or project.

Check whether the repair worked

Open a new Developer Command Prompt for the installed Visual Studio version and run:

where cl
cl

A successful result should locate cl.exe inside a Visual Studio toolset directory and display compiler information. If where cl points to an old, deleted, or unexpected directory, continue with the toolset checks below.

Do not use the existence of a random c1xx.dll somewhere on the disk as proof that the installation is correct. The compiler must load a matching set of files from the active toolset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Correct the toolset version and architecture

A project can continue requesting a removed toolset even after a newer Visual Studio version is installed. This is common with older CMake configurations, MSBuild projects, SDKs, and build scripts.

Check the selected toolset

Look in the error message for a full path. If it contains an old VCToolsMSVC<version> directory, compare that version with the folders installed on the machine.

In Visual Studio:

  1. Open the solution.
  2. Select Project.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Choose the correct configuration, such as Debug or Release.
  5. Choose the correct platform, such as x64 or Win32.
  6. Open Configuration Properties.
  7. Check General and the platform toolset setting.
  8. Select an installed toolset, if the project supports changing it.
  9. Select Apply, then OK.
  10. Clean and rebuild the project.

For CMake, inspect the selected generator, toolset, cache, and environment variables. Reconfigure the project from a fresh Developer Command Prompt after installing the required workload.

If the project genuinely requires an older toolset, open Visual Studio Installer, select Modify, open Individual components, and install the required legacy MSVC component if Microsoft still provides it for that product. Do not replace the missing file with one copied from another release.

Check x86 and x64 combinations

MSVC supports host and target combinations. For example, a compiler may run as a 64-bit host while producing 32-bit output, or run as a 32-bit host for a 32-bit target.

Installing x64 tools does not automatically satisfy every x86 build configuration. Check all of these:

  • The platform selected in Visual Studio.
  • The target selected by CMake or MSBuild.
  • The Developer Command Prompt being used.
  • The MSVC x86/x64 components selected in Visual Studio Installer.
  • Any environment variables that point to a previous toolset.

After changing the workload or architecture, close existing terminals and open new ones. Developer command prompts set environment variables when they start, so an old terminal can continue pointing to an uninstalled directory.

Fix 3: Repair the application that requested the file

If a third-party tool, SDK, plugin, modding utility, launcher, or game displays the error, the application itself may bundle or expect compiler tools.

First identify the executable:

  1. Note the application name in the error window.
  2. Select Task Manager if the program remains open.
  3. Right-click the process and select Open file location, when available.
  4. Record the application folder and any path shown in the error.
  5. Check the vendor’s installation requirements for Visual Studio or MSVC Build Tools.
  6. Use the application’s own Repair, Verify, or Reinstall option.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

For a game or ordinary consumer application, do not assume that installing Visual Studio is the answer. Verify the game or application’s files through its official launcher first. If the application is supposed to run precompiled code, a request for the compiler front end may indicate an incomplete bundle, a damaged installation, or an incorrectly configured plug-in.

A runtime-only Visual C++ Redistributable may not supply c1xx.dll. If the vendor specifically requires MSVC Build Tools, install the version and architecture documented by that vendor.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a compiler file, although a missing-file message alone does not prove that antivirus caused the problem.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open a detection that names c1xx.dll or the Visual Studio installation directory.
  6. Confirm the original file path and the detected product.
  7. Restore the file only if it came from a trusted, correctly installed Microsoft product and the detection is confirmed as a false positive.
  8. Repair the Visual Studio or Build Tools installation afterward.
  9. Run a full security scan.

Do not disable antivirus merely to obtain a DLL. If the file was restored, repairing the owning product ensures that its related compiler files are restored together.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally reinstall a Visual Studio compiler toolset, so use them when other Windows features or unrelated applications also show corruption.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run these commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to finish before starting the next one. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. Microsoft provides the same sequence in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

Restart Windows after both commands complete, then repair Visual Studio or Build Tools if c1xx.dll is still missing.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, retry the affected program. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again after confirming that the PC has a stable network connection, then run SFC again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies during a free scan, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and repairing the Visual Studio installation remains the definitive fix when that product owns the file.

Fix 6: Review drivers only when the evidence points there

Graphics, chipset, or storage drivers do not normally install c1xx.dll, so Device Manager is not a primary fix for this error. Use driver repair only when the failure began with a broader hardware, display, storage, or system instability problem.

To check a device:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the symptoms.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the affected application again.

If a recent driver caused the issue, use Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Do not remove unrelated devices simply because c1xx.dll is missing.

Manually checking dozens of devices and matching driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with its free scan, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Visual Studio or the affected application.

Do not download or register c1xx.dll

Do not download c1xx.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

This approach is unsafe and unreliable because:

  • The file may contain malware or be tampered with.
  • It may belong to a different Visual Studio release.
  • It may have the wrong architecture.
  • Its dependent compiler files may also be missing.
  • It may not match the executable requesting it.
  • Copying it can hide the real installation problem.
  • System folders are not the correct installation location for the MSVC toolset.

The safe sources are Visual Studio Installer, the official Visual Studio downloads page, Microsoft Visual Studio Build Tools, and the official repair or reinstall mechanism for the application that requested the file.

regsvr32 is also not a repair method:

regsvr32 c1xx.dll
regsvr32 /i c1xx.dll

These commands are intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. c1xx.dll is a compiler implementation DLL, not an ActiveX or COM server. Registration errors do not restore the compiler toolchain.

If repair still fails

Use this checklist before reinstalling everything:

  1. Record the exact error text.
  2. Record the full path, if one is shown.
  3. Identify the executable that requested c1xx.dll.
  4. Record whether the failure occurs during a build or during application launch.
  5. Check whether the caller is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  6. Check the installed Visual Studio instances in Visual Studio Installer.
  7. Confirm that Desktop development with C++ is installed.
  8. Confirm that the required MSVC x86/x64 components are installed.
  9. Check for a stale toolset path in the project, CMake cache, batch file, or environment variables.
  10. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  11. Review Visual Studio Installer logs if repair repeatedly fails.
  12. Retry with stable network access.
  13. Reinstall the affected workload rather than copying one DLL.

If the problem began immediately after an update or installation and a restore point exists, System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier state. It may remove applications installed after that restore point. Microsoft describes this process in its System Restore documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention

Keep the Visual Studio workload and MSVC toolset managed through Visual Studio Installer. Avoid deleting versioned VCToolsMSVC folders manually, and do not remove an older toolset until every project using it has been retargeted.

When deploying a build machine, document the Visual Studio edition, workload, MSVC architecture, Windows SDK, and project toolset. For third-party applications, preserve the vendor’s installation package and required architecture rather than copying individual DLLs between computers.

Frequently asked questions

Is c1xx.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is a Microsoft Visual C++ compiler front-end component installed with Visual Studio or MSVC Build Tools. It is not normally supplied as part of the Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component set.

Is c1xx.dll included in the Visual C++ Redistributable?

Usually no. The Redistributable supplies runtime libraries for compiled applications. c1xx.dll belongs to the compiler toolchain.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install both x86 and x64 packages?

Install the MSVC architecture components required by the build. A 64-bit installation does not automatically satisfy every 32-bit target, and host and target architectures can differ.

Can I fix this with System File Checker?

SFC can repair damaged Windows components, but it does not normally reinstall Visual Studio compiler files. Repair Visual Studio or Build Tools first unless other Windows components are also failing.

Why would a game ask for a compiler DLL?

It may be launching a bundled development tool, modding component, plug-in, or incomplete helper process. Verify the game files and identify the exact executable before installing development tools.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?

No. c1xx.dll is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Repair the product that supplied it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest permanent fix?

Repair or reinstall the exact Visual Studio, MSVC Build Tools, or third-party application identified by the calling executable and path. Do not copy a standalone DLL from an unrelated source.
