During the PS5 shortage, Japanese retailers tried several ways to make buying consoles for resale less attractive: Nojima reportedly wrote buyers’ names on boxes, GEO reportedly marked controller packaging after opening consoles, and retailers also used lotteries, purchase limits and account checks. These were separate store policies, not one national system—and they raised the cost of scalping rather than ending it.
The examples below come from coverage published November 23, 2021, during the shortage that followed the PS5’s September 2020 Japanese launch. Some Nojima anti-resale language remains visible on current product listings, but the available evidence does not establish that every retailer still uses the same procedures.
Why retailers tried to deter PS5 reselling
When consoles are scarce, opportunistic scalpers buy stock primarily to resell it at a markup. That differs from ordinary second-hand selling: the concern is that bulk or rapid purchases divert limited supply from people who want to use the console.
For electronics, factory-sealed packaging can command a premium. A retailer that opens a box, marks it, or links it visibly to a named buyer makes the item less anonymous and less pristine. The console can still be resold, but a prospective buyer may be less willing to pay extra for it.

Predictable, first-come, first-served drops also concentrate demand at a store entrance. Tech Times reported that a crowd rushed a Yodobashi-related Akihabara sale, staff were pushed, police arrived, and the sale was canceled. What Nojima did to the PS5 box
Visible buyer identification
The 2021 report said Nojima staff wrote the purchaser’s name on the side of a PS5 carton. This was a physical deterrent, not a technical anti-bot system or a ban on resale. It made the box look less untouched and anonymous, potentially reducing its appeal to buyers seeking a factory-sealed console.
A name on the carton could also make repeat purchases easier to associate with a customer. Nojima’s own 2021 business report described a broader “resale eradication declaration” after the PS5 launch, including lottery sales and purchase-history review. Its later corporate materials also discuss those measures. Nojima’s 2021 business report; Nojima’s April 2023 press information

How GEO reportedly marked packaging
Tech Times reported that GEO used lotteries for PS5 sales and asked buyers whether they accepted a packaging change. The reported procedure involved opening the console package and putting a large cross on the DualSense controller packaging. The reporting described the resulting item as opened or used for resale purposes; it does not establish a legal classification.

Why retailers used lotteries and purchase checks
Lotteries and randomized sales
A lottery reduces the advantage of camping outside a store or guessing the exact moment stock will appear. It can also give staff time to check eligibility before allocating scarce units. Randomized timing can make it harder to form a crowd around a predictable drop.

A lottery does not establish that a winner is a genuine end user, and it cannot create more consoles. Multiple accounts, shared identities, or participation by several people in one household can undermine the approach. Legitimate buyers may also lose repeatedly despite following the rules.
Purchase-history review and quantity limits
A one-unit limit constrains a single transaction. Reviewing purchase history can go further by flagging repeat buys over time, purchases across product variants, or accounts that repeatedly target scarce goods. It is still a retailer’s screening decision, not a guaranteed legal finding that someone is a reseller.

Membership and card eligibility
Some retailer sales limited eligibility to existing cardholders, store-account holders, or customers who registered before a restock. Such barriers can reduce anonymous walk-in purchases and make duplicate transactions easier to spot. They do not, by themselves, stop online bots or organized groups with multiple eligible accounts.
The trade-off is access: visitors, cash buyers, new customers, or people unable to obtain a required card or membership may be excluded. A policy can reduce bulk buying while shifting advantage toward customers who already have the right account or payment method.

| Tactic | Friction it creates for resale |
|---|---|
| Buyer’s name on the box | Makes the product look less anonymous and pristine. |
| Opened or marked packaging | Removes some of the appeal of a factory-sealed item. |
| Lottery or randomized timing | Reduces the advantage of queue position and predictable restock timing. |
| One-per-family limits | Restricts how much stock can be concentrated in one purchase. |
| Purchase-history checks | Can surface repeated buying patterns across transactions. |
| Membership or card eligibility | Adds an account or identity barrier to purchasing. |
These measures target different parts of the resale process: allocation, identity, purchase volume, and the premium attached to sealed packaging. A determined reseller may still find buyers willing to accept opened goods, use multiple people or accounts, or sell through channels where packaging condition matters less. A severe shortage can also leave room for profit even after extra costs and inconvenience.

Retailers must weigh deterrence against burdens on ordinary customers. Opening a box can complicate a gift or a collector’s purchase; purchase-history screening can produce false positives for households buying legitimately; and restrictive eligibility can shut out new shoppers. Online bot defenses are a separate problem: marking a box happens after a sale and does not stop automated attempts to enter a queue.
What PS5 shoppers should check
- Prefer authorized retailers and compare the full cost, including shipping and any required membership or payment method.
- Before paying, confirm whether the unit is sealed, opened, or marked, and read the seller’s condition and return terms.
- Read lottery eligibility, quantity-limit, and cancellation rules before entering or ordering.
- Check proof of purchase and warranty eligibility, especially for imported or marketplace units.
- Be cautious about paying a large scarcity premium to an unverified reseller; a lower asking price may not compensate for uncertain condition, returns, or support.
What is still current
The name-writing and GEO package-marking examples are historical reports from 2021, not verified universal policies for 2026. Nojima continues to display anti-resale language on current PS5 product pages, but that does not show that every retailer still follows the same procedures.
