Is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 worth playing? That depends on which mode you want. Its multiplayer and round-based Zombies offer the clearest reasons to jump in, especially if you enjoy the familiar Black Ops loop. The co-op campaign is a less reliable draw, and the game’s quick follow-up to Black Ops 6 makes the “more of the same” criticism hard to ignore. Black Ops 7 can be a good time without feeling like a meaningful break from the series’ recent rhythm.
What Black Ops 7 includes
Activision’s game page sets the story in 2035, where David Mason leads a JSOC team to Avalon amid psychological warfare. The game combines a campaign playable solo or in co-op, competitive multiplayer, and round-based Zombies set in the Dark Aether. Activision lists the November 14, 2025 launch date and platforms as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Battle.net, Steam, and Game Pass. Why it feels like more of the same
The sequel’s timing gives the criticism context. In June 2025, Activision called Black Ops 7 the first time the series had stayed within Black Ops for consecutive releases. That does not prove the games are mechanically unchanged, but it does help explain why some players may feel annual-sequel fatigue before they start. Activision’s Tyler Bahl described the plan as giving players more time with Black Ops 6 and Warzone’s live seasons before turning to Black Ops 7. Call of Duty’s announcement
Tom’s Guide reviewer Mike Andronico argues that moving directly from Black Ops 6 to Black Ops 7 makes the series feel “even ‘more of the same’ than ever.” In his view, additions to the campaign and Zombies do not make the overall package feel new enough. Game Informer takes a less dismissive view: its review calls the game a companion piece to Black Ops 6 rather than a reinvention, but says it expands how people can play together. These are distinct launch-era reviewer judgments, not a unanimous verdict or a measure of current player opinion.

How the modes hold up
Campaign: an uneven, co-op-focused story
The campaign’s official design invites players to squad up or go solo, and its surreal direction gives it a different flavor from a straightforward military thriller. But its unusual approach does not guarantee a satisfying story or varied missions. Game Informer criticizes the plot and campaign variety while noting that the story is unusually short, at nearly five hours in its review. PC Gamer’s PC review is much harsher, calling the campaign a slog and faulting its encounter design and reuse of assets and mechanics. That is one publication’s platform-specific assessment, not proof that every player will have the same experience.
If campaign is your main reason to play, go in knowing it is built around co-op and that critics were divided. The story’s surreal turn may appeal to players looking for something stranger; it will not necessarily compensate for the campaign’s uneven reception.

Multiplayer: the strongest case for familiar Call of Duty
Activision lists 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch. Those are publisher-stated launch counts, not a promise about the current map pool, which can change in a live game. The publisher also highlights Omnimovement, Overclock customization, and Hybrid Combat Specialties. Game Informer praises the map selection, giving multiplayer one of the clearer positive endorsements in the review coverage. These systems and maps may make the mode appealing if you want a new setting for an established Call of Duty style; they do not, by themselves, make the game a radical departure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteZombies: a substantial reason to keep playing
Black Ops 7’s Zombies is round-based and set in the Dark Aether. The official site lists Standard, Directed, Survival, and Cursed variants, as well as Dead Ops Arcade 4. Tom’s Guide describes Zombies as robust, and Game Informer also praises its larger round-based experience. For players who return to Call of Duty for cooperative rounds and repeatable runs, this is a stronger argument for the game than its campaign.

Is Black Ops 7 worth it for you?
- Play if you mainly want multiplayer: The map selection earned praise from Game Informer, and Omnimovement and other customization options provide the familiar systems to learn and refine.
- Play if Zombies is your main attraction: It has several listed variants and earned positive notes from both Tom’s Guide and Game Informer.
- Be cautious if you mainly want a campaign: It is designed for solo or co-op play, but reviewers differ sharply on its story and encounters.
- Be cautious if you want a major reinvention: Activision’s back-to-back Black Ops release was an unusual first for the series, and the familiar-sequel critique is central to the game’s reception.
The value judgment is therefore mode-dependent: Black Ops 7 is easier to recommend as a multiplayer-and-Zombies package than as a campaign-led experience or a bold new direction for Black Ops.
