Call of Duty’s DMZ is scheduled to return on October 23, 2026, as part of Modern Warfare 4. The catch is access: the official Xbox listing says players must purchase Modern Warfare 4, and Activision’s announcement does not announce a free, standalone DMZ release. That is what has been announced as of October 4, 2026—not a guarantee that no other access option will ever be offered.
When does DMZ come back?
Activision has announced DMZ as an experience in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with the game scheduled to launch October 23, 2026. That date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026, so the new DMZ has not launched yet. Activision lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 for the game. Activision’s announcement is the source for the launch date and platform list.

Do you have to buy Modern Warfare 4 to play DMZ?
The announced route is to buy Modern Warfare 4. The Xbox store listing explicitly says the game must be purchased. It listed the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Vault Edition at $99.99 when checked October 4, 2026; those are Xbox store prices, not guaranteed prices for other platforms, regions, retailers, or later dates.
Neither the Activision launch announcement nor the reviewed Xbox materials announce a free or separately downloadable version of DMZ. So players should not assume they can install the returning mode through Warzone at no cost. This describes the currently announced access model, not a permanent promise that no alternative will be introduced.

Campaign early access is not DMZ early access
The Xbox listing says campaign early access begins October 16, 2026, for preorders. The announced full-game and DMZ launch date remains October 23; the early-access notice is specifically for the campaign, not a stated early start for DMZ.
Warzone is a separate announcement
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 integration with Warzone begins in Season 1 shortly after the game launches. That is a Warzone integration timeline, not an announcement that DMZ is a free Warzone mode. Likewise, the planned Warzone platform change for PS4 and Xbox One concerns Warzone and does not establish that the new DMZ is coming to those older consoles. Activision Support’s Warzone platform update addresses that separate service change.

What’s different about the returning DMZ?
Developers describe this version as a deeper extraction-shooter experience shaped by lessons from the earlier beta. In an Xbox Wire interview published June 7, 2026, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot put it this way: “We like to think of DMZ as an action extraction shooter.” The details below are developer descriptions of a game that has not yet launched, rather than independently tested findings.
A longer progression arc
The developers describe progress that carries across multiple deployments. Each Active Duty character is described as having a persistent backpack, loadout, and trait tree, so different characters can develop distinct capabilities over time. Players are also expected to upgrade a Forward Operating Base (FOB), with stations to interact with and build out loadouts and weapons.

Structured missions alongside changing encounters
Xbox Wire describes a mix of structured missions and emergent play, with solo or squad deployment. The combat zone is intended to change through weather, shifting objectives, and hostile forces. The interview also describes detection feedback for solo players: an audio cue and visual indicator change as AI detects the player, while taking cover or going prone can pause the detection meter. That is the developers’ explanation of the design, not a guarantee about how every encounter will play.

Activision’s announcement names PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox Wire also mentions Xbox cloud availability in its platform summary. Since platform and cloud access can depend on the specific service and regional listing, check the store for the platform you intend to use before buying. The available announcements do not establish a new DMZ release for PS4 or Xbox One.
