Make sure you have the right Modern Warfare III
This listing is for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, released on November 10, 2023. It is the reboot sequel starring Captain Price and Task Force 141, developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It is not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from 2011, the finale of the original trilogy. Activision’s overview is at Activision, and Xbox lists the 2023 release at Xbox.com.
Which Game Pass plans include the game?
The current US Xbox store page identifies the 2023 game as included with Premium, PC Game Pass and Ultimate. The same page distinguishes cloud entitlements, so “included with Game Pass” does not mean every tier can stream it.
| Plan | How the listing describes access | Platform qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Premium | Included; cloud play listed | Check the local store for console and regional availability |
| PC Game Pass | Included in the PC edition | Windows 10/11 through the Xbox app |
| Game Pass Ultimate | Included; cloud play listed | Console, PC and cloud options depend on supported region and device |
| Game Pass Essential | Not listed as an included cloud entitlement | Xbox says the game must be purchased to stream it |
Entitlements and names have changed over time. If your store shows only a purchase button, check your account, country, plan status and the exact edition before paying. Use the current listing rather than an old plan comparison: Xbox store page.

Xbox lists versions for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Compatible handhelds can use Xbox services where the relevant Xbox app or browser support is available. Cloud performance is not identical to a local installation: connection stability, regional availability, service capacity, device support and controller compatibility all matter.
A standalone console purchase is sold as a Cross-Gen Bundle, with Smart Delivery providing the appropriate Xbox One or Series X|S version. Game Pass access should not be treated as ownership that transfers to another platform.

How to install and launch it
Xbox console
- Open the Xbox Store or the Game Pass app.
- Search for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and select the 2023 title.
- Confirm that the page shows your Game Pass inclusion badge.
- Select Install or Play.
- Accept any required Call of Duty launcher or content-pack prompts.
- Sign in to, or create, an Activision account if prompted.
Download size and required packs change by platform and by the content you select, so do not rely on a fixed installation-size estimate.
Windows PC
- Install or update the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the eligible subscription.
- Search for Modern Warfare III and choose the PC edition marked as included.
- Install the Call of Duty launcher and the requested game content.
- Link or sign in to your Activision account.
Xbox identifies a Standard PC Edition in its game information: Windows edition listing.
Cloud gaming
- Use Premium or Ultimate where the title is cloud-enabled in your region.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device.
- Search for Modern Warfare III.
- Select Play or Stream and connect a compatible controller.
Do you need Call of Duty HQ?
Call of Duty uses a shared launcher and content-pack structure. The Xbox app or console catalog may show the game through the Call of Duty interface rather than as an entirely independent application. Search for the full 2023 title, then install the campaign, multiplayer or Zombies components you want. The launcher and pack requirements can change, so follow the prompts shown for your platform instead of expecting one universal download.

Console multiplayer and account progression
Game Pass plan benefits and console online-multiplayer rules have changed, and the available Xbox listing does not establish one universal rule for every plan and region. Check the current terms attached to your plan before assuming a subscription covers console online multiplayer.
Keep the same Activision account if you want to preserve Call of Duty progression across supported platforms. Xbox profile access, Activision progression, platform ownership and cross-platform entitlements are separate concepts; Game Pass access itself does not grant ownership on another storefront.

Call of Duty: Warzone is a separate free-to-play product. It shares the wider Call of Duty ecosystem and launcher infrastructure, but Game Pass inclusion of Modern Warfare III is not a promise that every Warzone item or mode is included.

Game Pass or buying the game?
Game Pass is the better fit when
- You want to sample or finish the campaign without paying the full standalone price.
- You also use the subscription for other games.
- You value the option to move between console, PC and cloud where your plan supports it.
Buying is the better fit when
- You want access without maintaining a recurring subscription.
- You expect to play for many months or years.
- You want a permanent license independent of catalog changes.
Xbox pages showed a regular digital price of $69.99 for the Windows edition and Cross-Gen Bundle when checked on August 18, 2026; sale prices can change. See the Windows listing and Cross-Gen listing. A subscription is access, not ownership: if it expires or the title leaves the catalog, you need an active entitlement or a purchase to continue playing.
Why it might not appear
The library shows no Game Pass option
- Confirm that you are signed into the Microsoft account with the subscription.
- Check your country or store region.
- Verify that the subscription is active and eligible.
- Search for the 2023 Modern Warfare III, not the 2011 Modern Warfare 3.
- Update the Xbox app or console and refresh the catalog.
The page offers only “Buy”
You may be using Essential, an expired plan, an edition for a different platform, or a region with different catalog rules. Account and store synchronization can also take time. Reopen the listing after confirming the plan and region.
Cloud play is missing
Essential subscribers may need to purchase the game to stream it. For Premium or Ultimate, check regional availability, service status, device and controller support, and whether you are using the correct Microsoft account.
Bottom line
As of August 18, 2026, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) is a Game Pass inclusion for Premium, PC Game Pass and Ultimate in the US Xbox listing. Premium and Ultimate are the plans identified for cloud play, while Essential requires a purchase for streaming. Use Game Pass for a flexible trial or short campaign run; buy the game if you want long-term access without a subscription.
