No—Modern Warfare III (2023) did not become permanently free to play. Activision and Blizzard ran limited-time access events in 2024 that let players download and play selected Multiplayer content and Modern Warfare Zombies without buying the full game. Blizzard’s Season 3 promotion ran from April 4 through April 8, 2024. It advertised free access to Multiplayer and Modern Warfare Zombies for that window.

Multiplayer maps and mode
Blizzard specifically named the new 6v6 map Emergency, plus Das Haus, Stash House, Rust, Tetanus, Satan’s Quarry and Skidgrow. The event also included the MWIII mode Hordepoint.

Modern Warfare Zombies
The promotion included Modern Warfare Zombies, the game’s open-world Zombies experience. That was separate from the campaign and did not turn the entire premium release into a free-to-play product.
Was the campaign free?
The campaign was not listed in Blizzard’s free-trial paragraph. The documented offer therefore supports Multiplayer and Modern Warfare Zombies access only; it does not support a promise of free campaign play. Anyone wanting the complete package still needs the full game or a separate offer that explicitly includes Campaign.

Can you play MW3 Zombies without buying the game?
During the April 4–8, 2024 Blizzard event—and during any other event whose terms explicitly included Zombies—players could access Modern Warfare Zombies without purchasing the full game. That permission ended with the event. In 2026, treat Zombies as paid MWIII content unless an active store promotion says otherwise.

That complete scope is different from the temporary trials, which exposed only selected Multiplayer and Zombies content.

- Check the official PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net or Steam store page for a current event label and an end date.
- Read the included-content list. A legitimate trial should identify the modes available rather than imply that Campaign is included.
- Confirm the platform and region. Free-play promotions can be platform-specific or limited to particular markets.
- Look for the access-ending condition. A trial normally removes access when its published window closes unless you purchase the game.
Do not confuse Call of Duty: Warzone, which is a separate free-to-play product, with the paid Modern Warfare III release. A Warzone download does not by itself grant the MWIII campaign, full Multiplayer package or Modern Warfare Zombies.
