Modern Warfare and Black Ops are separate premium subfranchise lines inside the broader Call of Duty franchise. Warzone is a separate free-to-play, live-service branch built around large-scale online matches. They share the Call of Duty name, but they are not interchangeable games: their campaigns, modes, business models and typical ways of playing are different.
This guide explains what each branch is, how Modern Warfare’s modes fit together, what Warzone actually offers, what can safely be said about Black Ops, and which starting point makes sense for different players.

Call of Duty is an umbrella franchise
Call of Duty is best understood as a family of related game lines rather than one continuous product. Activision’s official lineup places Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare II, Warzone, Vanguard, Battle Pass and Call of Duty: Mobile in the same overall Call of Duty product ecosystem. That lineup does not mean every item is the same type of game. Modern Warfare and Black Ops are premium series, while Warzone is the free-to-play service branch.

The distinction matters because the name on the box tells you less than the subfranchise and mode structure. A player looking for a traditional single-player campaign needs a different product from someone who wants recurring battle-royale seasons. Someone asking for cooperative missions is looking at a different part of Modern Warfare again.

Modern Warfare: campaign, competitive multiplayer and Special Ops
Modern Warfare is presented as a premium Call of Duty game with three main components: Campaign, Multiplayer and Special Ops. The official Modern Warfare page separates those modes explicitly, and each serves a different purpose.
Campaign
Campaign is the single-player story mode. It is the part of Modern Warfare designed for a player who wants authored missions, characters and a controlled narrative rather than matches against other people. Progress follows the game’s scenario instead of a live-service season or a shrinking multiplayer arena.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is the online competitive component. You play against other people in recurring matches, using the game’s maps, loadouts and match rules. It is the conventional Call of Duty competitive experience: short sessions, team-based play and repeatable matches rather than one uninterrupted story.
Special Ops
Special Ops is cooperative content for up to four players. Activision describes its missions as deployments with squadmates to cut a global terror organization off from weapons, funds and intelligence. In practical terms, it extends the campaign’s conflict into team-based objectives instead of creating a separate Call of Duty subfranchise.
That relationship is important. Special Ops is not a fourth premium series alongside Modern Warfare and Black Ops; it is a cooperative mode within Modern Warfare. If you want a narrative campaign followed by missions you can tackle with friends, Modern Warfare’s three-part structure is the relevant choice.
Black Ops: a separate premium series
Black Ops is its own premium Call of Duty line, separate from Modern Warfare. Activision’s official lineup calls it an “iconic” series and identifies Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as a named entry.

The available official material establishes the series identity, but it does not provide a complete release chronology or a definitive account of every Black Ops setting. That means a reliable explanation should avoid presenting an exhaustive timeline as though every date and connection were confirmed here. Treat Black Ops as a distinct line and verify the specific entry you are considering, especially when story order matters to you.

Choosing Black Ops is not simply choosing another Modern Warfare campaign. It means entering a different premium branch with its own title-specific setting, story and mode implementation. The safest way to compare two Black Ops and Modern Warfare releases is title by title: check the exact campaign, multiplayer and cooperative features of the editions you intend to play rather than assuming that one branch’s structure is identical to the other’s.
Warzone: the free-to-play live-service branch
Warzone is not a Modern Warfare campaign and not a Black Ops release. Activision describes it as a free-to-play combat experience and promotes it as a live service with changing maps and modes. You can enter it without purchasing a premium Modern Warfare or Black Ops title.
Its core appeal is large-scale online survival and squad combat. The current official Warzone page lists Resurgence, Battle Royale and Black Ops Royale. The exact rotation of maps, seasons and playlists can change, so check the live Warzone page immediately before installing or planning a session.
Battle Royale
In Battle Royale, players loot equipment, eliminate enemy squads and survive while the gas closes in around the playable area. The last team standing wins. The shrinking field forces encounters: teams cannot remain spread across the entire environment indefinitely, and movement decisions become as important as aim.
An earlier official Modern Warfare/Warzone product page described a 150-player firefight in which the last squad standing wins. That is a product-page feature statement, not an independently audited player-count statistic, and it should not be read as a promise that every current playlist always contains exactly 150 participants.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Resurgence
Resurgence is one of Warzone’s listed modes and is designed around a faster return to the action than a traditional last-team-standing format. Because the live service can alter rules, maps and availability, confirm the current playlist details in the game before treating any particular Resurgence rule as permanent.
Black Ops Royale
Black Ops Royale is also listed on the current official Warzone page. Its inclusion does not turn Warzone into the Black Ops premium series. It remains a Warzone playlist within the free-to-play service, even when its naming or content draws on Black Ops.
Plunder and contracts
The earlier official Warzone page describes Plunder as a mode focused on collecting and depositing cash. Contracts provide loot, cash, experience points and other rewards. This creates a different objective from simply being the final surviving squad: teams can pursue economic targets and contracts while managing fights and movement.

| Branch | Product type | Primary experience | Named modes or components | Payment model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare | Premium Call of Duty subfranchise | Story campaign plus competitive and cooperative play | Campaign, Multiplayer, Special Ops | Purchasable title |
| Black Ops | Separate premium Call of Duty subfranchise | Title-specific Black Ops experience | Black Ops Cold War is a named entry in the official lineup | Premium series |
| Warzone | Free-to-play live-service branch | Large-scale online survival, squad combat and rotating playlists | Resurgence, Battle Royale, Black Ops Royale; Plunder is described on an earlier official page | Free to play |
The table shows why “Which Call of Duty is this?” and “Which mode do I want?” are separate questions. Modern Warfare identifies a premium subfranchise with several modes. Black Ops identifies another premium line. Warzone identifies a free-to-play service that can incorporate content and naming from the wider Call of Duty ecosystem.
Which Call of Duty should you play first?
Start with the experience you actually want, not with a presumed franchise order.
Choose Modern Warfare for a contained story and mixed modes
- Pick Modern Warfare if a single-player campaign is your priority.
- Choose it if you want competitive online Multiplayer after the story.
- Choose it if you need cooperative missions for a squad of up to four.
- Use the exact edition and platform listing to confirm which content is included before buying.
Modern Warfare is the most straightforward entry for someone who wants one premium purchase to cover story, traditional multiplayer and cooperative Special Ops.

Choose Black Ops when that specific series interests you
- Pick Black Ops if you want a separate premium line rather than another Modern Warfare title.
- Select a specific Black Ops release after checking its own campaign setting, multiplayer offering and edition details.
- Do not rely on an assumed complete chronology; the official material identified here does not establish one.
This approach prevents a common mistake: buying a Black Ops title while expecting it to continue a Modern Warfare campaign directly, or expecting every mode and story relationship to work the same way.

- Pick Warzone if you want to start without purchasing a premium game.
- Choose it for Battle Royale’s looting, shrinking gas and last-squad-standing objective.
- Choose it for Resurgence, Black Ops Royale or other currently available playlists.
- Choose it if you prefer repeatable online sessions and squad play over a fixed campaign.
Warzone is the natural starting point for a player whose first question is, “Can I play Call of Duty for free?” It is also the branch most affected by live updates, so current mode and map information should be checked at the time you play.
Platforms, editions and purchase checks
Activision presents Modern Warfare as a purchasable title for PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net and Steam. Store availability, editions and included content can vary by region and can change over time, so verify the listing for your platform before paying.
Warzone’s defining commercial distinction is that the core experience is free to play. Free entry does not make it a campaign replacement: its official positioning centers on live online modes. If your goal is a single-player story, look for a premium Modern Warfare or Black Ops product whose listing explicitly includes Campaign.
Black Ops should likewise be evaluated as a premium title on its own terms. Confirm the exact game name, platform, edition and included modes rather than treating “Black Ops” as a single downloadable product.

Common points of confusion
“Is Warzone part of Modern Warfare?”
Warzone is associated with Modern Warfare in Activision’s product lineup, but it is framed as a distinct free-to-play service. It should not be described as a campaign subseries or as merely one of Modern Warfare’s three internal modes.

“Are Modern Warfare and Black Ops the same series?”
No. They are separate premium subfranchise lines under Call of Duty. Their shared publisher and franchise name do not erase the distinction between them.
“Does buying Modern Warfare automatically give me every Warzone feature?”
Do not assume that a premium purchase and the free-to-play service are identical products. Warzone has its own live mode lineup, while Modern Warfare’s official structure is Campaign, Multiplayer and Special Ops. Check the current store and in-game requirements for the particular content you want.
“Is the 150-player figure a permanent Warzone rule?”
No conclusion that broad is supported by the product-page wording. The 150-player statement is a feature description from an earlier official page. Current playlists and player counts can differ as the live service changes.
“Can I follow a complete Black Ops timeline from this overview?”
No. The confirmed information here establishes Black Ops as its own series and names Black Ops Cold War, but it does not establish every release date, setting or story connection. Use the individual title’s official information when ordering entries.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide whether you need a campaign. If yes, begin with a premium Modern Warfare or Black Ops title whose listing includes Campaign.
- Decide whether free entry is essential. If yes, begin with Warzone.
- Decide whether you want cooperative missions. Modern Warfare explicitly includes four-player Special Ops.
- Decide whether you prefer fixed content or a changing service. Campaign and premium modes are tied to the purchased title; Warzone’s maps and playlists can change.
- Check the exact edition and platform. Modern Warfare is listed for PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net and Steam, while store details and included content should be confirmed for your region.
- Confirm the current Warzone playlist. Resurgence, Battle Royale and Black Ops Royale are listed, but live-service availability can change.
Bottom line: one franchise, three different starting points
Modern Warfare is the premium, all-rounder branch built around Campaign, Multiplayer and four-player Special Ops. Black Ops is a separate premium series whose individual entries should be checked title by title. Warzone is the free-to-play live-service branch focused on Battle Royale, Resurgence, Black Ops Royale and other changing online modes.
If you want a story, start with the premium line and edition that names the campaign you want. If you want cooperative Modern Warfare missions, look for Special Ops. If you want free, continually changing squad combat, start with Warzone. Those choices answer the central difference more accurately than treating every Call of Duty release as one undifferentiated game.
